I could see Bethesda giving Obsidian another shot at Fallout since its exactly the genre they specialize in and New Vegas was a success critically, but i have a hard time seeing EA giving them the green light on a Star Wars rpg in the vein of KOTOR. Not sure if the market is there in EA's mind.

Well, we're not getting KotOR 3 b/c the first two aren't canon. Though I would love a new KotOR era game for the new canon.

My hope falls on Alpha Protocol 2. I would love to return to that world. Adored the first one despite how buggy and unpolished it was.

The Cain/Boyarsky game is the AAA game. It was Deadfire, a AAA game with a large publisher and a small project just getting started.

Mostly I think this is just them having fun with Twitters dumb 280 character increase and not really indicative of any pending announcement. Would be happy to be proven wrong though.

Yeah you're right, was just doing some research. Which means the AAA is a new IP. I'm not inclined to believe MS is the publisher, considering they've been working on this game for over a year, but I guess we will see.

I'm not exactly sure what I'd want out of an Alpha Protocol 2, but I think that I'll want whatever they come up with.

Ugh MS right now would almost be as bad as EA hiring them for me. MS has shown 0 interest in making decent games with depth, they went all in on the multiplayer/GaaS crowd and I would be really upset if they hired Obsidian (again) to force them to make something like what they wanted stormlands to be.

That's not even mentioning that they'd be in a position to potentially kill Obsidian (...again) by cutting the game at any time. Also that the PC version would be stuck on that horrendous W10 store instead of steam most likely :(

They managed to sign a deal with a mystery publisher that managed to employ most of their staff after the Armored Warfare split.

I honestly think it might be Microsoft given they were keen to defend the fact that Microsoft was still hiring independent developers for larger projects when most publishers weren't.
A lot of MS projects tend to use UE4 too.

Fallout: New Vegas was really good. I certainly want to see them make a new one in the series again. Obsidian really has a lot of talented people to make RPGs.

I kinda hope it's something non-CRPG. I'm personally getting a bit burned out on CRPGs, especially since i'm coming off of DOS2 which is my GOAT for CRPGs so far, I don't really want to jump into another one for a while coming off of it.

There are logical guesses but there really is no telling what they're working on and with whom as the publisher. It's very exciting!

I want them to try something new, Tyranny hit it out of the park, in my opinion. If they have to use a license, I'd love to see a White Wolf game.

If they really wanted to I'm sure they could easily create an Alpha protocol spiritual successor to get around not having the IP. It's not like AP is a brand that carries a ton of weight, and the people to whom it does will get the connection right away.

That said, I hope I have a hard time believing a big AAA publisher would fund an original Obsidian IP. Makes me think this is something licensed.

Assuming this is Project Indiana, here's some info stolen from RPG Codex that was described as "creepily accurate".

Almost Everything we know about Project Indiana so far:

  • Tim Cain is Project Director and Leonard Boyarsky is one of the leads. (Boyarsky joined Obsidian in April 2016)
    • Chris L'Etoile (ex-Bioware writer who did major role on Mass Effect 1/2) joined Obsidian in May as senior narrative designer, and likely working on this
  • It's multiplatform action RPG and bigger (in terms of budget and team size) than PoE 2
  • It's a brand new IP owned by Obsidian. Not Star Wars, not Fallout, not a sequel of anything. Setting is being built from the ground up by Cain/Boyarsky and co.
  • They have a publisher/partner for this one
  • It's using Unreal Engine 4. Obsidian has been made prototypes with UE4 at least from 2015, and one of them, Star Wars Mos Eisley recreation (non-game), released to public in September 2016
Speculation

  • Probably not set in usual fantasy setting. Steampunk? Post-apoc? Sci-fi?
    • Cain's Facebook post in 2014: "I'm thinking about science games again."
    • He also posted somewhat Steampunk-ish photos, but he deleted his Facebook account
  • Many of Armored Warfare developers moved to Indiana team, especially 3D artists

Hopefully something like a spiritual successor to Mass Effect reading that

A new Fallout or KOTOR. For the love of god those can be the only choices.

Arcanum is such a great setting really underutilized in gaming.

Thanks for posting this.

EDIT: One of Tim's lessons for RPG design is surprising. Codex summarizes it as recommending simpler character creation (I haven't watched the video, so I can't say how accurate this is), with his own games offered as examples of excessive complexity. Now, I fully agree that character sheets can be intimidating. It is true that many wRPGs force you to make your most important choices before you can grasp how they will affect your experience. But even acknowledging that difficulty, Bloodlines and Arcanum have totally sweet character sheets.
