Apple has approved Parler's return to the iOS app store following improvements the social media company made to better detect and moderate hate speech and incitement, according to a letter the iPhone maker sent to Congress on Monday.

The decision clears the way for Parler, an app popular with conservatives including some members of the far right, to be downloaded once again on Apple devices.

The letter — addressed to Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Ken Buck and obtained by CNN — explained that since the app was removed from Apple's platform in January for violations of its policies, Parler "has proposed updates to its app and the app's content moderation practices."

On April 14, Apple's app review team told Parler that its proposed changes were sufficient, the letter continued. Now, all Parler needs to do is to flip the switch.

"Apple anticipates that the updated Parler app will become available immediately upon Parler releasing it," Apple's letter said.

Apple and Parler didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Parler, an alternative to Facebook (FB) and Twitter (TWTR) that bills itself as a haven for free speech, was removed from major tech platforms in early January following the US Capitol riots of Jan. 6.

Parler was kicked off of Apple and Google's app stores, as well as Amazon Web Services, which had been hosting the company's product.

Apple will let Parler back on the App Store

How long until it is removed again?

Being intimately familiar with Apple's review process for apps, this means fuck all.

Apple can piss off with this. A platform whose only uses of note are for spreading mass disinformation and for being used to organise a deadly terror attack.
Keeping it off ain't blocking free speech, it's saving lives and democracies.

If I understand the process right they still have to update the app, get it reviewed by Apple for approval, and then it'll go back on the store. So these could all be empty words. Parler could have said "we'll make all these changes" but not actually do it, and this won't go anywhere.

After all, the January 6th Capitol Riot wasn't a big deal, that was just a dress rehearsal after all, you can trust the Parler folks now, promise, they've turned over a new leaf

Is there going to be a big demand for this still after the elections and now Trump's gone?

They're going to get booted right back off because the audience for the app wants to do the things that got them booted off in the first place and the second you impose moderation on the app it instantly becomes unappealing to that audience and becomes a shadow of itself. That audience straight up doesn't want to be moderated on principle.

yup. it's puzzling why Apple would even allow this back on.. the users know their intentions... and do not want to be moderated..

So the message I'm getting from Apple here is they're pretty cool with white supremacy.

People with more time than I will have fun testing Parler's moderation and security polices.

If they screw up again, they'll get the boot.
I give it 1 month if they don't moderate it properly.

I think its just corporate speak BS. What I imagine happened is Parler's lawyers sent Apple a letter saying "if we make all these changes will you let us in". Apple said yes. Problem is, as far as I can tell they haven't actually made any changes yet, so this is all fluff.

It likely is but it's hard to not read that and think to myself 'well I guess Apple will be fine with it if they attempt to mask the racism'. I mean the platform itself is built for hatred, so any leniency regardless of action is condoning hatred imo. The platform was basically used for home grown terrorism in the US so the very idea of it even being considered to be reinstated is showing more support than I'd expect for something which should have a zero tolerance policy

They had to let them back on and I agree with the move. Give them another chance and if they mess up, they are more than likely gone for good. Apple will have evidence for their reason to permanently ban them.

How many people have to die apple? It's a White Supremacist terrorist recruiting tool. The end result is inevitable. There will be a mass shooting, and it will be tied to parler, and they will remove it again after many lives lost. And for what? So the traitors like Ted Cruz don't cry about you on twitter?

Didn't their web hosting service bail on them anyway? Who is hosting the website?

I assume Apple's stipulation for letting them back is heavier moderation, which the average user of Parler doesn't want, so I don't expect them to be particularly successful.

So Apple blocks NSFW servers on Discord, but allows a white supremacy promotion app back on their store?

Edit: I've just read that this was a decision made by Discord to get a lower age rating on the store?

Tim Cook said as much on Sway a few weeks ago, that if Parler can have some sort of moderation system then they'll let it back on. The problem is that moderation is antithetical to the apps existence, and within days of relaunching they'll probably get taken down again for not moderating something.

So Apple blocks NSFW servers on Discord, but allows a white supremacy promotion app back on their store?

Edit: I've just read that this was a decision made by Discord to get a lower age rating on the store?

I actually think it's the same justification for both, not that it's necessarily right or wrong, but that apps that host unmoderated content won't be permitted on the App store, whether it's unmoderated right wing content or unmoderated porn. If the app takes no policy towards moderation, then Apple will consider dropping them from the store.

With Discord, I believe they [Discord] didn't want to take an approach to moderating NSFW content, so the compromise they worked out was blocking NSFW from the app via the app store, which permits the app to stay on the app store.

But I think that policy has changed as of today anyway where Apple will allow NSFW on DIscord as long as it's "opt-in":

Discord loosens NSFW server ban on iOS

There’ll be an opt-in toggle on Discord’s website.

On the plus side, isn't it so poorly secured that if it does go back up, the chances of it being hacked and all its users' admissions of crimes and other fun details being leaked within weeks is near 100%?
