The first Darksiders game came out just before the third God of War game and at that time it was something new from Vigil. Years later, we have Fury with her whips and the combat which we have seen can be compared to Kratos and his chains. While God of War is a AAA game with a huge budget and an animation team the size of the total team working on Darksiders 3, the devs believe that they might have a shot.

While Fury's weapon of choice might be similar to that of Kratos in terms of mechanics, these are two very different games. While God of War presents a graphically real world, the Darksiders art style is different and can be called a bit cartoonish. The devs talked (translation) about the matter and the following is what they had to say in this regard:

The term "AAA game" is information that a huge number of specialists worked on a given title for several years, and astronomical amounts were spent on the marketing campaign. However, for others there is still a place on the market, you can still achieve success if you have a decent product offering interesting ideas and experiences. If something is good for you, if it somehow appeals to you, you will choose it anyway, without looking if it is "AAA game" or not.

Never in the sales space.

It might end up having better combat. Especially if it's 60fps on consoles.
God of War was let down by it's frame rate.

based on their previous efforts.....no.

Not to say that their games are bad, but they are just extremely derivative. Its a lot like a greatest hits but performed by a cover band.

Depends on what is meant by "competing" with it. I love Darksiders but I don't think itll come close in sales and modern GoW gameplay has evolved beyond what it used to be. I think Darksiders has the opportunity to exist in a similar space that GoW used to. But both franchises are on very different wavelengths.

Darksiders 2 and God of War are two of my favorite games, I hold them very close to eachother. Although God of War is better in most aspects its also 6 years between the games. They are built on the same formula which is Zelda+Old God of War. I dont think DS3 has the budget to compete though, DS2 was at surprisingly high budget (50mill usd I think?).

They're developing an AA Darksiders for a loyal fanbase. THey know their game isn't running against god of war in the goty department but they think the game is something their fans want.

I want it. But i don't think i'm going to get a game on par with god of war. I would be very happy if darksiders 3 would be like the first game but a little different. That's enough.

isn't this releasing in one of the most crowded times of the year? i'd be surprised if it can compete with it's own franchise releases, let alone one of sony's biggest.

Why does the press does this? Are they trying to get people to mock them willfully? Because they clearly didn't say anything regarding the matter until they were pressed to.

Poor devs, best of luck to them.

It's nice to feel ambitious and all but nah.

The new God of War is something very special.

Lol the headline is so misleading. The quote says nothing like that and the author seems to just be inserting his hot take for click bait

The thread/article title is misleading as the devs don't really say that. Smells of clickbait.

Those quotes didn't get me very excited.

'Yeah we have a small team and a decent product, some people might want it'

I guess if they said they were bankrupting themselves to make this game in an utterly misguided attempt to compete with Sony's massive AAA productions you'd be more excited?

Really stupid to phrase it like that, now you are going to have a segment of Sony diehard fans with a grudge against the game from the get go just because they dared to challenge GoW, even when they didn't even say that.

Reminds me of the press labeling Killzone the 'halo killer' and it getting tons of shit for that even years after.

I am confused they did not say anything about actually competing.

I like the dev quote though.

I think Darksiders 2 stomped on this IP's image a little too hard for journalists to be making these comparisons. Let DS3 be its own thing and resurrect the franchise and then start comparing it to much more successful IP's.

That is very clickbaity, hopefully the devs don't get a ton of shit from fanboys that don't read past the headline. Their comment is completely logical and reasonable, it shouldn't need to be said but IGN had to press the question.

They won't have a shot because both games are very different.

I don't see why the hell that article is even comparing them when DS is much more comparable to old GOW.

Right.

And also, look at all the dummies posting gifs that clearly couldn't even bother to read the quote from the devs themselves. Sometimes I wish we'd bring back the age-old rule to this place where you must read the OP before participating in a thread.

Depends what they mean with "compete" I guess.

No chance of competing on the level of criticism, marketing, groundswell, etc.

But based on how much fun I had with God of War, if the game is even the tiniest ounce more like the old God of War games, yeah they'll definitely have a shot at making a game I'll enjoy more.

Don't @ me.

Once again a thread where people only read the title. sigh

The devs didnt say this. Thats a quote from the writer.

They just said that there is a place for non AAA games in the market.

Uhg, and somehow people accepted that and till this day we hear that KZ was not the "Halo killer" is was supposed to be. Well, it was not supposed to be.

Anyway. I will be there for Darksiders 3. I'm playing the Darksiders 2 for the first time now and having a good time. However, without a strong emotional component, I doubt it will get anywhere near God of War levels of praise. Sony has a "thing" with captivating stories and characters that most publishers/devs lack.

Well God of War is about being a parent and yelling Boy! a lot, and the journey is about a right to adulthood for the child who is part demi-god. If Darksiders 3 is aiming to compete with God of War, then simply utilizing Kratos' combat controls & mechanics is simply not good enough.

Doubtful. Framerate alone doesn't make combat great. God of War has really good mechanics and looks a fair bit more involved than what we've seen of DS3 so far.

What a clickbait title. They didn't say anything about competing with GoW. They pretty much just said there's a market for both.

Yeah, apparently the writer thinks saying your game could be successful somehow translates to that you have a shot at competing with the most successful game in the same genre, because a range between failure and GoW success doesn't exist. Shame since as clear by this thread people are just shitting on the developer for something they didn't say.

the comparison comes out of nowhere. The author keeps pushing that idea onto the devs but they seem to deflect it multiple times.
