You'd think they'd be trying to do larger print runs of stuff like JJK as apparently volumes are crazy hard to come by even on the used market.

Does that mean 1 out of 10 manga sold in 2020 was One Piece?
Almost, yes. It's still a lower market share than what it had at its peak. In 2013, it had a 15% market share, which went down to 10% in 2016 and to 7.3% in 2019.
It started exploding in 2010/2011, so before that, it had a lower market share.

Naruto probably reached a higher market share at its peak around 2009, but we lack the data to be certain of that.

One Piece went so high because the rest of the market declined between 2009 and 2015.
Now, it's much more healthy and even smaller series are thriving. (manga that used to be completely out of print (because the publishers thought it wasn't worth reprinting them) are selling again. A new edition of Banana Fish Volume 1 quickly sold through its first shipment of 6k units - when the first release of the manga struggled to sell over 500 units 15 years ago !)

My Hero Academia #1 is out of the Bookscan Adult Graphic Novel top 20 for the first time since May 2017!

My Hero Academia #27, Chainsaw Man #4, Jujutsu Kaisen #9 and Demon Slayer #21 all released on the same day, so the comparison between them is easy.

Incredible month for Demon Slayer thanks to the US release of the movie on April 23rd.

It is probably out of stock lol
MHA still the biggest, but interesting that CSM is already bigger than JJK and DS

Demon Slayer has reached 2m units sold in France.
1 million of these were sold in 2020.

Considering how little it sold in 2019, it's 2021 total (4 months in) should be around 900,000 units. Which is incredibly high. One Piece, Naruto, Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia should all have sold at least as much. And Jujutsu Kaisen is not far behind either. They might all reach 2m units sold, or even 3m units, in 2021!

In 2020, One Piece became the first manga to ever reach that threshold, and now, 5 manga might achieve that again!

One week left until the end of the first semester.

Tokyo Revengers should beat Attack on Titan for the third spot.

Onna no Sono no Hoshi and Uruwashi no Yoi no Tsuki are both selling really well despite only having two volumes out.

Not much else to say. It was a slow week (a usual drop following great Golden Weeks like we had last week)

The new backlog wall is now made up of JUjutsu Kaisen and Tokyo MANJI Revengers
The top 50 is a little boring for now (again), so I figured a title change was appropriate

I just took a quick glance thru this thread.
I have a couple of questions:

1.- I don't see that the Shaman King anime had any impact on its sales? (I didn't see any volume chart)? But the anime won't be canceled, right?

2.- Do you think there is something preventing old stories (remakes) from making big sellers? For example Dai no Daiboken it's an excellent story (So is Shaman King, also currently shown) and they don't seem to have anywhere near the sales of other hot properties (Do you guys think a manga has to be in serilization to get a huge boost?, eg. Tokyo Revengers, Jujutsu Kaisen.)

3.- (This is more an observation rather than a question) Clearly, as pointed by IIRC Rouk' there is new demography of manga readers (Both in Japan and outside), and it's a huge one that has probably never read anything besides titles from 5 years to now (e.g. My hero academia, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc), if I were Shueisha I would totally make a One Piece remake, imagine One Piece getting some of that new demography, if One Piece just got 100k of those new readers with a seasonal anime, that's 10million volumes sold -assuming those 100k new readers eventually buy the 100+ volumes-, surely it seems like it would be a fruitful adaptation (or maybe other title getting a remake, I'd prefer if Pierrot, for example just stopped Boruto and remade Naruto for new generations, but without filler lol)

Yeah, the anime did not have any effect on sales
But I don't think this anime was the kind that was made to boost the manga sales, they probably did not have any expectations in that regard, so no worries.

Dai is selling decently. The new perfect edition is doing respectable numbers (better than the Shaman King Perfect Edition, like, 4 times more, but Dai was always more popular).
But I think old stories need to be absurdly popular to start making waves again.
ie. Slam Dunk
The Perfect Edition sold so much in 2018 that it was the 4th best-selling manga of the year.
When they announced that there would be a new SD movie, the manga climbed back up the charts. It ended up being the 20th best-selling manga of January 2021. The movie could do wonders for it. Even now, every time there are some Slam Dunk news, the manga sells again (like the announcement of the scholarship movie to be aired on May 30th).
But Slam Dunk in Japan is absurdly popular.
Way more than Shaman King or Dai could ever dream to be. It was Dragon Ball/One Piece/Demon Slayer level. Arguably even above Dragon Ball.

I'm not sure, but I think there are a lot of benefits to having a weekly anime - helping merch sales notably.
Every one already knows about One Piece, even if they don't buy the volumes. It's too late for the manga to gather new readers.
It's need something like a Perfect Edition, as it would encourage people to try again without intimidating them with the high number of volumes

Only if 4Kids gets control of the Western localization.

Rouk, could you explain these numbers please?
I saw a youtube video that said that manga had taken the 20 top spot of graphic novels in the USA, so they took it another month or is this the month they were talking about?

Also, for example this number:

06./ Attack on Titan #1 - 14,260 / 68,663 (-19%)

14,260 means what it sold this month, and in total AoT #1 has sold 68,663 volumes? Or it's this year, right?
What about all the other titles that only have one number listed? We don't have information on their accumulated sales, I guess?

Funny to see some "older" titles like Tokyo Ghoul or Hunter x Hunter, just curious to see them still sell so well.

Also, didn't see this posted so might as well post it.

screenrant.com

Manga Is More Popular Than Ever, And Marvel Is Capitalizing On It

Manga is booming so the game is changing.

Nine million copies of My Hero Academia in print for the English speaking countries with over a million just of volume 1!
Kimetsu no Yaiba has over four million copies in print.

For reference, last year, in april, Viz announced MHA had over 5 million copies in print.

So in the span of a year, it almost doubled!

Back then MHA had 23 volumes published in the USA (English speaking countries, which is VIZ's market) [So 5Mill+ with 23 volumes back in ]
Right now 22 volumes of Kimetsu No Yaiba have been published in the USA [So 4Mill+ with 22 volumes]

And I remember back in like when BLEACH was finishing it's Soul Society run (So around volume 23, VIZ announced it had sold 1.2million, that was around volume 23's release, so back in 2008).

So just to get things in perspective of how manga has been selling like crazy, today's hot sellers have basically tripled BLEACH which was, I guess, the second best selling manga over a decade ago (The first one, I assume, being Naruto, though sadly I don't think we have ever had any numbers published by VIZ about Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Rurouni Kenshin, etc).

The BookScan monthly top 20 that I post here are Adult Graphic Novel rankings. So far in 2021, manga have taken the top 20 spots in 4 months out of 5 (January had one non-manga).

As for the reading of the numbers I post, everything is here :
RANK./ TITLE - MONTHLY SALES / YTD (MONTHLY GROWTH)
So 14,260 is its sales for May 2021 and 68,663 is the 2021 total (YTD = Year-to-Date).

The accumulated yearly sales and the monthly change are numbers added by myself, they are not part of what leaks. So YTD data is only availble for titles that charted every single month, and monthly growth is only available for titles that charted the previous month.

Nice to see HxH chart. On one site it said it was its first time making the top 20. Did they mean since NPD BookScan has been a thing (saw that that happened in 2017)? Or it's counting everything since '05?

NPD BookScan is a thing since 2017 because it's the year NPD bought BookScan. BookScan was previously owned by Nielsen and existed since 2001. The earliest yearly report that I found is from 2003. I'm not sure how much monthly data is availble, but I checked every month since 2008 and I couldn't seem to find another instance of Hunter x Hunter being present. I doubt it had any chance of charting before the 2011 anime anyway, so I didn't try to find earlier data.

For some time, some HxH volumes were OOP/Hard to find, I can't remember the exact years, but it probably was around 2008ish-2010ish, I assume they reprinted most, if not all of them, with the remake and the remake gave HxH a boost. So yeah, I doubt HxH had ever charted. This gives me hope that new readers don't just stick with current hot properties and give "classics" a try too.
(Also.. Wow I feel old referring to HxH as a "classic", but I mean it is almost 25 years old lol.)

Also, thanks for your explanation, Rouk'.

Not sure if you are talking about this week's data only or the year-to-date total. But the answer is both.

It's hard to be certain of how well the new volumes did this week until we get the volume ranking. And even then, it'd be better to at least wait for next week to be sure of whether they sold well or not. But One Piece did decline over the years. It seems to have stabilised though.

As fot the yearly total, yeah, it's pretty low for One Piece, but nothing unexpected. Its backlog sales are lower than ever before, but it does make sense for a 100 volumes manga.
Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen are exceptions.
Demon Slayer is now by far the biggest manga ever (reaching around 7m units sold per volume, when One Piece or Slam Dunk are only at around 5m per volume. Even Dragon Ball with worldwide sales included doesn't reach such a ratio).
Jujutsu Kaisen is probably the second biggest boost ever, after Demon Slayer's. It's way better than Attack on Titan's. Its new volumes now sell better than One Piece's.
And then, there's Tokyo Revengers. While far from the level of the other two, it's still selling incredibly well thanks to its anime.

There's not much One Piece can do against new up-and-coming manga. It's been slowly declining for years now. It was never going to stay at the top forever. The fact that it stills sells this much after all this time is a testament of its huge popularity.

Crap, this is the first time since the anime started IIRC that Tokyo Revengers sold worst than last week, right? (Last week it sold 697K this one 680K hopefully this is just that volumes are out of stock and not that demand has been met.

It's been pretty clear for a while that Kimetsu no Yaiba basically created a huge amount of new fans of manga in Japan, so there is definitely a new fan base of people eager to read hot shonen properties, I think a huge part of Jujutsu Kaisen's readership is people that finished Kimetsu and now they go to the next trend. (Jujutsu Kaisen is the highest manga ever I think with the ratio of 16 volumes and 50 million published, isn't it?)

That's why I am saying Shueisha should be remaking One Piece right now when the publication is still ongoing. Other remakes that are made once the series had finished don't create the hype (As I said the current Dragon Quest and Shaman King remakes, both very beloved properties but they were old mangas that had been long finished publication). They should invest in at least two cour late-night anime with a more mature audience in mind, either using the Wano designs/aesthetic or making a slight redesign for the new generation of watchers (something like the cup noodle commercials ONE PIECE had a couple of years ago).

That, IMO, is the only way for the series to get new readers and sell some old backlog. Shueisha still prints One Piece volume's with 3 million first printing, so they still believe they will sell at least that much in the long run, so there's that. Heck, even if Shueisha doesn't want to make an anime committee for a new One Piece reboot, If I were Oda I would invest some of my own money towards a new production unless Oda is somehow forbidden from doing it (I imagine maybe Toei has exclusive rights to make the One Piece anime, who knows).

Well, there is only one title that sold more than One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, and, unless I am mistaken this list includes all the Jujutsu Kaisen backlog volumes, so it might be the case that ALL the JJK volumes have managed to sell more than One Piece this week, I think that's the case. But I am certain that if OP's newest volume somehow managed to sell more than JJK it must have barely beat it.

But yeah, One Piece has been in a decline ever since like volume 70ish iirc, its highest 1st printing was like 4.15mill iirc, and now they "just" print 3mill. It sells 1 million-ish 1st week and manages to sell around 2 million until it doesn't rank anymore iirc.

I mean, as pointed out by Rouk, it's not a super high decline in sales, it's pretty impressive for such a long-running manga to maintain all of its fan base. But yeah, expect not to see One Piece to see in the top 5 manga yearly from now on... And maybe not even in the top 10 in a couple of years... Of course, unless Shueisha brings their marketing team and do some magic.

Toei making a separate One Piece anime would just be them eating their own tail, and yes Toei absolutely owns the exclusive rights to a One Piece anime. Oda would have to personally demand Toei stop producing the anime in order to get a remake done, which is never going to happen.

One Piece is 100 volumes long and nearly 25 years old. Eventually the new overtakes the old, hell that's what One Piece is about.

Never really thought about how there's a whole new generation of manga readers out there that One Piece can't reach as easily. With 100 volumes and counting, and the anime being massive and slow as molasses, that's a high barrier to entry that newer series aren't bogged down with.

It'd be funny if they could find some way to get back issue sales to shoot up again, that's a whole lotta volumes... which is probably why it won't happen. Sure gonna be hard to touch its overall cumulative sales total, though.

I guess they could do some kind of fancy omnibus release. Larger size, hardcover, extras and maybe something like 3 volumes worth per release.

The highest ratio currently is still kimetsu no yaiba
The 16 50m is great but kimetsu is like 23 volumes to 150 million volumes or black jack

I'm 99% sure the Black Jack 176m number on wiki is wrong. The publisher never officially revealed such a number (they announced 45m) and every original Japanese source that used it have since removed it (western media that used them haven't been updated)

Yeah Black jack is almost definitely wrong.

What I meant was that IIRC JJK was the highest manga recorded ever for 16 volumes. (For comparison iirc One Piece had like 35m at volume 16)
So basically it was on track to "outperform" KnY if trends were to continue (but it won't since sales have slow down, so JJK reached all its potential buyers.. Unless something crazy happens).

Even with 19 volumes KnY was at "only" 40m.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Is 1st Manga to Take Japan's Entire Weekly Top 19

All 19 volumes rank, with volume 19 at #1 with 254,000 sold in 2nd week

There is another potential x-factor, the live action adaptation. Even if the show is mediocre it can increase manga sales a bit. An adaptation that gets great reviews and looks like it has a big budget could push it further.

That's the only way I can see One Piece increasing in sales (backlog sales anyway), since I don't think Toei is willing to do a reboot while the series is ongoing. Plus I don't even think a new anime will push the needle much.

From what I have seen posted Chainsaw man is already selling better than JJK in USA, so with a good anime I can see it selling super well, but the problem is it already ended right?

I can see that making it a super great seller, a short manga is an easier sell.

It didn't really end. The manga is moving to Jump+, which means no more rushing to meet weekly deadlines and fewer guidelines on what's acceptable to show.

Chainsaw Man was already pushing the envelope a little too much for a manga published in a magazine that children read, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to see that the manga gets more graphic now that that isn't an issue.

For the first time since Oricon started releasing weekly data, the newest One Piece volume did not top the ranking during its first week.

Yeah, that's what I noticed... Idk if it had been a coincidence back in the Kimetsu no Yaiba days, but I thought at the time that Shueisha was actually avoiding releasing One Piece and Kimetsu in the same months so OP wouldn't lose face (because obviously, KnY was selling more than OP). So I was shocked when One Piece released its newest volume in the same month as JJK, like idk. Shueisha could have just released the volume next month since they delayed volume 100 until fall anyways (Supposedly there's rumors of a collaboration between Detective Conan and One Piece, because both of them will get their volumes 100 in fall).
