Hollywood star Matt Damon has complained that young people no longer watch films properly after seeing his children playing with their phones instead of looking at the big screen.

The 50-year-old actor voiced his dismay at the state of the industry amid criticism of his latest film, Stillwater, which is based on the case of Amanda Knox, an American who was convicted and later cleared of murdering British student Meredith Kercher.

Damon, whose films are estimated to have grossed nearly $4 billion (£2.9 billion), warned that making films for the big screen is in decline, as home streaming dominates the entertainment landscape.

Interviewed by the Sunday Times, he admitted he was baffled by their behaviour.

'How can you watch a movie if you are texting?'

"The way they watch is different to how we did," he said. "How can you watch a movie if you are texting? As someone who makes these things I can't say I love that. Movies as we know them aren't going to be a thing in our kids' lives. And that makes me sad."

For decades the cinema industry relied on two streams of revenue: box office takings and the sale of DVDs.

The sale of DVDs has plummeted with the growing popularity of home streaming.

To lure patrons into the cinema and protect box office sales, studios have made films with "international" appeal, removing any local nuances, Damon said.

"It made the most profitable movie, one that could travel around the world.

"And if you want a movie to travel and play big you want the least amount of cultural confusion.

"So there is the rise of the superhero movie, right? They're easy for everyone. You know who the good person is, who the bad person is.

"They fight three times and the good person wins twice."

Kids and teens were and continue to talk and play while watching movies... This isn't new, this isn't unique to the younger generation...

I have to say I observed a difference in how I watched movies in lockdown, even recently when I watched Black Widow.
Instead of giving it my full focus like at the cinema, I was on my phone.

I don't really disagree. I'm a "serious" film person and even I will pick up my phone and leaf through twitter for a minute if a film's not holding my attention. It's a habit I kinda hate but hard to break.

If it's something I really want to watch I tend to just turn my phone off at home or put it in another room.

Obviously at the cinema this isn't a problem for me, though some people treat it like their living room regardless :\

Just children? Reading some people's thoughts here on certain movies you would think they were on their phones when the movie was playing too.

I mean he's right? People in their 20's can hardly give a full episode of TV their attention without checking their phone or getting side tracked messaging people.

Stillwater was ass and pretty exploitative of Amanda Knox's story. You're better off looking at your phone than watching that movie, that's for damn sure.

Children? They barely pay attention to anything.

Now adults on their phone all the time, that shit bugs.

Lots of flippant comments in here. If you haven't noticed your own attention span decreasing with increased smartphone usage, and how that likely is even worse in kids that grow up with them, I don't know what to tell you.

He's not wrong but it's not just kids. When I watch something I get on my phone and miss minutes at a time of a tv show or film, ask my partner what happened as she's reading some celeb gossip on her phone and she's like, "huh, I don't know I missed it too".

These aren't typically good movies or shows we are watching. If what I'm watching is captivating I don't feel the need to browse Resetera or IM. But honestly if it's dull the mind wanders and the interwebs is a good place to wander.

Children? Most people aren't able to watch movies without checking their phone anymore.
Parenting doesn't seem to exist anymore either.

" after seeing his children playing with their phones instead of looking at the big screen."

Imagine defending this behavior or calling it a boomer opinion.

Though it's certainly not exclusive to children.

He's not wrong. My ex didn't like watching stuff with subs because it meant she couldn't be on her phone.

Same, but I don't think it was limited to the lockdown. If I'm not in a theater, I'm multi-tasking on my phone or Macbook.

Nah, he's right, though I'd include adults in that too. At least us of those younger brackets. My millenial ass recommended Alien to a 20-year old friend of mine that had never seen it. After watching it, she told me that it really wasn't special, but that she doesn't know if that was because she browsed her phone on the side. M*fucking Alien!!!

Yeah phones are addictive and they're made that way. I'm so glued to my phone these days that I'm finding ways to make it easier to put down and walk away from.

Not just children. People of all ages just don't know how to live in the moment anymore and are glued to their screens, even while watching other screens.

It annoys the hell out of me when I'm having a movie night and people are playing on their phones reading Facebook like it's 2015.

He is right, but it is only problem when folks complain about the "plot holes" when it was just shit they missed while on their phones.

Movies and many other things. He is right. It ruins the value we get from compared to how it was before.

Phone are addictive and that doesn't mean they are good for us.

Well, kids will be kids. But if adults are doing it I have to wonder if they have developed such small attention spans that they can't focus on sth for more than 5 minutes.

I don't think I've ever been with a person that has been on their phone while watching a movie with me and still understood everything that happened in the movie. It's gotten to the point where I don't think I could talk about the movie with said person without noticing their apparent lack of details.

I mean he's not wrong. I'm 35 and have my phone in my hand almost entirely throughout a movie looking stuff up in relation to the movie. IMDB is such a time sink

I sat through Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with someone's glowing phone screen in my peripheral the whole time as they googled facts about the movie and Tarantino.

He's right

definitely not just kids. and that exact thing is why i enjoyed going to theaters to watch films. forces you to focus on the damn movie.

comparatively, it's really hard for me not to get sidetracked trying to watch something at home

I deliberately put my phone away from me so I can focus on watching something. If somethings boring I'll just stop watching it, but I know I won't enjoy it as much if I'm not paying attention.
