I will say that both FF VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 didn't stick with me as much as I thought they would. If you would have told my teenage self that a remake of FF7 and the sequel to KH2 wouldn't be at the top of my favorite games in the respective years they came out, I wouldn't have believed it.

Remake certainly isn't the phenomena the original was. Even the controversial changes and ending just didn't have a long lasting discussion. It sold well but that got overshadowed by the overwhelming success of Animal Crossing.

Yea it's unfortunate, but it felt like FFVIIR came and went.

I don't know how to describe it but there's a mismatch between how popular/important final fantasy is and how much it sells, FF feels like its a big event game that sells 10+ million consistently but the truth is the series barely ever reaches 10 million and it's popularity and impact in the mainstream public eye ebbs and flows.

It's similar to pre-botw legend of zelda in alot of ways where its cultural impact might be bigger than its actual popularity.

But due to that it constantly has the potential to just blow up like BOTW-era Zelda and is probably why Sony keeps investing in the franchise.
They want it to blow up(again) on their consoles

You can also extend this too metroid, which people will make you think it's this huge franchise but really is just waiting for that one game to blow up.
It seems nintendo low-key wanted it to be like their halo in the 6th and 7th gen if they could just tweak it in the right way without losing its identity

Maybe this time a new Metroid game can sell well in Japan lol.

I still think NST should've made an online multiplayer mode in Prime 3 as the successor to Hunters. That could've really grabbed people I'd feel.

KH3 suffers from the same shit like GoT and Sherlock latter seasons, it's basically terrible fanfiction meant for the stans who have cheered at every bad decision that has been made during a long running series.

I have an opinion of FFVIIR. It's not either good or bad, it's just an opinion of someone which played some hours of it.

For someone which was expecting a major disaster due to incompetence of Square-Enix with the franchise with Final Fantasy XIII and afterwards, it's a decent game. It's not memorable, plot-wise feels like a giant "What if", it lacks some charm from the OG game and Tifa and Aerith for some reason have exchanged personalites (well, not actually, but certainly feels like it after the weird expansion of the universe of that game), but it's a good foundation.

I think the game, more than it's story with the PS fanbase, has more to prove. I feel that since it's a first part of a game, most of the people are waiting for the conclusion to jump in. Saying that, I think that the number of copies sold so far, being good or bad depending on the people's opinion, doesn't represent the real interest of people on the finished game.

Just how much Sony will pay to mantain exclusive in a world that it's direct concurrent is a lost case in Japan and it's direct fanbase on the west is already heavily part of the PS ecossystems? I doubt that they even care.

It's pretty much impossible for the PS5 to not eventually be viable. Having FF, KH, DQ, MH and pretty much everything else will see to that.
I kind of disagree. I realize the word "viable" is probably too vague, but to me it's where a significant number of third parties will continue to release physical software for the PS5 in Asia. With the current software sales I don't think it'd be good enough for anyone.

Having exclusive FF16 should help but other than that, nothing has been announced yet of your listed titles. FF is also declining so much atm. DQ is likely a multiplat, and I don't know when the next KH would even release. A good exclusive MH would hopefully help the PS5 if that happens but now that Rise is also there, its impact may be less than the original World.

Also this is to everyone, but why is Sony doing cross gen with Horizon? You'd think they'd want that pushing PS5 sales? At least it could help the PS5 user base in Japan

Sony has their goals and plans for their consoles, usually with a longer transitionary period or "cross-gen", and perhaps it was an RE8 situation where they had to shift internally to get it to work at whatever cost on the PS4. It's not like those PS5 FLOPS are going to be so visible right now so early on, they would be used for resolution and leveraging RT (if it has it). On top of the other features that the 5 has over the 4/4 pro.

It just sells for itself, plus they know their audience as they have cultured their audience, they'll want the best experience for that game as much as possible.

Problem with FF7R is, if it stays exclusive at launch, the next part should sell even less than the first.

I wouldn't be surprised if the project was downsized and we are only getting 2 Parts now.

It's hard to tell whether Yu-Gi-Oh will be the next Konami million seller on Switch. Surely, we should not expect as much given sales of recent entries. However, hype is real and it might surprise many.

Minecraft up again? FDC seems to have done as well as Buddy Mission I think? VN don't seem too big recently. What's the biggest opening week for a VN and biggest LTD sales?

There hasn't been any recent retail Yugioh games and this is based on the current anime and rules, which are popular with children and it comes with good promos for people who aren't even interested in the video game. I'm not saying it will be a million seller, but it has more going for it than the other games.

Sure, but going from sub-100k sales to 1m, even applying all those caveats, would be a huge feat and not something one should realistically expect at this moment. We'll be monitoring preorders and sales expectations will be more clear as we approach the release date.

Yup Imran revealed this on era and I can't remember if it was him or another leaker here, but they basically said the remake was a contributor in Sony/SE feeling comfortable with the same timed exclusive deal for FFXVI

I don't think Famitan will have a big opening. Mostly because is only a limited edition, there's no regular one. It's sold out on Amazon and I doubt it's getting more shipments.

if we're talking about "game exclusive to next-gen machines that might conceivably sell a notable amount of units", then I'd put it at:
Horizon II: Forbidden West (Horizon having sold at least 259,000 LTD)
Call of Duty 2021 (Black Ops IV having sold at least 547,000 LTD, Modern Warfare Reboot at least 255,000, and Black Ops Cold War at least 173,000 so far)

Horizon is cross gen, Call of Duty has yet to be confirmed, seeing how PS3/360 still got the main Call of Duty in 2015 I wouldn't bet against a PS4/X1 SKU for XB1/PS4 yet

No need for confirmation, CoD is going to be cross-gen this year, and according to hearsay, for the 2022 entry too.

If 5M made them "so happy", I'm curious as to what their expectations were. Persona 5 is around 3M, so did they really only expect 7R to do 4M?

As I said last page, SE moved forward with their FF7 projects and the exclusivity deal continues. I don't see any indication that SE is unsatisfied with its sales except the game could've sold more, but then again all games could've sold more. The game is less a cultural phenomenon than the original is not something tangible to compare about. It will face the problem of serialized games with continuing story: that the next parts tend to sell less than its first, but this is a very foreseeable situation and not unique to FF7R.

Those aren't too extreme of scenarios tbh, no more extreme that claiming PS5's inevitable viability based on things being exactly what they were last decade with no possible deviation. Case in point your MH6 and FFXVXI examples as being shot down for any potential Nintendo platform, with the former we don't actually have platforms and with the latter it actually was a PS4 game until last year when Sony paid for it not to be. I actually wouldn't rule out a PS4 port of FFXVI yet later on, maybe even just for Japan where it's going to crater without one.

The real point was though that things could definitely go worse for PS5 depending on what Nintendo might do competitively. I mean at this point in Vita's lifecycle (6 months in) everyone still expected it to get MHP3 HD and eventually MH4.

Don't you mean 2m to 1m? We didn't go from VII directly to XV.

IIRC from the Capcom leaks we do know that MH6 is in production for next gen consoles + Stadia

As to the FF decline point well yeah and we'll be going from 1m to ~600k or something.
I kind of disagree. I realize the word "viable" is probably too vague, but to me it's where a significant number of third parties will continue to release physical software for the PS5 in Asia. With the current software sales I don't think it'd be good enough for anyone.

Those games might not be announced yet but they're going to come at some point, and DQ is the only one that isn't going to be de facto exclusive.

On the issue of cross gen I think that holds PS5 back in the short term but in the long term it will be less of a factor because for those games that are not on Switch the PS5 is the only real option for Japanese consumers to eventually move towards.

This post reads weirdly to me. What are you trying to suggest? Last revealed sales milestones for FFVIIR is 5M, they haven't announced any other sales numbers from what I can find. It could be north of 6M by now, sure, but we don't know that. Until then, estimates in the range of 5M-6M seem quite reasonable to me.

is 5.5 million a bad result for a FF "mainline" game?
I'd say that 7R could be seen as some sort of mainline? Not sure about it - to me RER2 and RER3 still have to be considered partially not-mainline in terms of sales post completion analysis

Not at all, those sales are fine if not good.

People online may have expected FF7R to be some behemoth seller eclipsing any previous FF but it doesn't mean Square Enix did, or that it was reasonable.

Ah, ok - because to me sounded like good sales - in line with a mainline episode, despite it being a remake (not saying that this nor RER2 or RER3 should be seen as low budget spin offs, here!)
I mean: that sounds...good, and enough to continue this path/direction/stretegy

Monster Hunter Rise is in 2nd place and New Pokemon Snap is in 3rd place maintaining top positions with stable sales.
In addition, Famicom Detective Club ranked in 4th place. This is a remake of games released on Family Computer Disk System from 1988 to 1989 and it is a special limited edition that contains two games on one game card."

That release is to tie in with the anime. It doesn't really have anything to do with the situation they are in.

I mean, they're re-releasing a 2017 game in 2021 as a new edition and years late dlc where the great hook is the ability to switch to the 2018 anime's adaptation dub.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I'm asking because I don't know
do you think that the 5millions milestone (that obviously today is slightly higher) is low/good for a "mainline remake"?

:p
6.6m in September 2017 (9 months) and 7.7m in August 2018 (21 months and after the PC release).

Mm...2 millions gap isn't that low - surely being multiplatform and brand new helped FFXV, compared to FFR7, right?
Frankly FF7R is weird imo. It really launched at the perfect time on PlayStation in Japan and WW (optimal userbase, lockdowns, high rated, cult game...). RE2R a year earlier performed very strongly in comparison to RE7.

My take is that JRPG audience isn't as concentrated as it was in 2016 on PlayStation. For various reasons, it is more split between platforms now.

I think RE2R and RE7 are more distinct in terms of game design; with RE2 being the more direct follow up to the success of RE5 and RE7. FF7R on the other hand is a 3rd person, cinematic ARPG which isn't that distinct from FFXV.

I think if RE2R was FP like RE7 it would have done worse.

The multiplatform for FFXV was PS4/XB1 until November 2017, so for the 6.6M Milestone, the majority was PS4 still. I think a 80-20 split is not an unreasonable prediction. The PS4 versions of FFXV and FF7R are roughly comparable I'd think, unless FF7R has gone well beyond 6M without SE saying so. All in all, FF7R managed to perform roughly as a mainline, not too bad I'd say.

Well FF7R's 5m announcement was on August '20 (4 months after release), so the chance are they've sold more now. They just need to announce it lol. I thought they would've had updated sales number on the 1 year anniversary, but guess not.

With the game being free on PS+, it'll probably blur the numbers a bit more too

FFXV was overshipped and had to crawl to sell the day one edition in many territories.

It was sold for 39.99 in the US less than a month after the initial release.

Yeah, the question is whether we can assume that this means they haven't passed 6M (hence my 5M-6M) or Squeenix just didn't care to mention that they had passed that mark.

Just to clarify my point, I believe 7R sales were fine overall.

However, I question how Part II would do since it would naturally decline from Part I. I am not even mentionning the switch to PS5 which will impact significantly a market which represented 30% of WW FF7R sales.
