Not necessarily a factor of popularity but
Manga sales data in a couple select markets:

US:

2020 Best-selling mangaka:

01./ Kohei Horikoshi [My Hero Academia] - 1,055,010 (+50.2%)
02./ Koyoharu Gotouge [Demon Slayer] - 557,369 (+380.6%)
03./ Junji Ito [Uzumaki, Gyo, Tomie, Smashed, etc.] - 250,858 (+64.4%)

Compared to 700k for MHA and 115k for KnY in 2019. KnY/Gotouge was 8th in 2019.

2020 Best-selling volumes:

01./ My Hero Academia #1 - 136,491 (+38.2%)
02./ My Hero Academia #2 - 106,259 (+54%)
03./ Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba #1 - 80,547
04./ My Hero Academia #24 - 76,151
05./ My Hero Academia #3 - 70,730 (+33.4%)
06./ My Hero Academia #23 - 63,728
07./ Uzumaki HC - 62,465 (+77%)
08./ My Hero Academia #4 - 58,990 (+47.5%)
09./ Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba #2 - 53,372
10./ My Hero Academia #5 - 52,393
11./ My Hero Academia #25 - 50,612
12./ Haikyu!! #1 - 50,292
13./ Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun #1 - 48,185
14./ My Hero Academia #22 - 48,173
15./ Tokyo Ghoul #1 - 47,008 (+74.1%)
16./ My Hero Academia #21 - 41,665
17./ My Hero Academia #6 - 40,325
18./ Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba #3 - 39,808
19./ The Promised Neverland #1 - 37,060
20./ Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba #7 - 35,552

Currently, Demon Slayer is the second/third best-selling manga of the US (in terms of monthly sales for new volumes), behind MHA/on par with JJK.

France:

2020 Best-selling manga series:

01./ One Piece - 2.2m
02./ MHA - 1.2m
03./ Naruto - 1.2m
04./ The Promised Neverland - 0.8m
05./ Demon Slayer - 0.7m (up from under 100k in 2019)

2020 Best-selling manga volumes:

01./ Naruto #1
02./ Naruto #2
03./ Demon Slayer #1
04./ Dragon Ball Super #10
05./ Naruto #3
06./ One Piece #93
07./ My Hero Academia #1
08./ One Piece #95
09./ One Piece #94
10./ Dragon Ball Super #11

As for 2021, Demon Slayer volume 1 has a chance of being the single best-selling volume of the year. But It's going to be hard to top the Naruto volumes (which are helped by their price being half that of other manga volumes - 3€ instead of 7€). It should easily end the year at 250k units sold (more than twice its 2020 total) which is unprecented, though other manga should reach that level (It happened this year because of the manga boom).
As for new volumes, KnY is 4th, behind OP, Dragon Ball Super and MHA. However, KnY is still growing while DBS is stagnating, so that might change soon.
In terms of sales per series, I think it's going to be third. No one will approach One Piece (whose goal should be 5m), but after that, all of Naruto/MHA/Attack on Titan/Demon Slayer have a chance at beind #2 with 2m-2.5m units sold. Imo MHA will stay second, but Demon Slayer should get that third rank.

These are the only 2 markets that I have data for.
But from what publishers have been saying, this phenomenon is worldwide. However, it's a manga boom. It's unsure if these IP will see their sales elsewhere (video games, merchandising, etc) grow in a similar way.
But KnY is by far the IP that benefitted the most from this boom.

TL;DR
KnY is a top 2 manga IP in the US manga market and a top 3 one in France.

And things should be similar in other countries, with OP and/or MHA sometimes being above (but not always, I recall the KnY manga breaking records at some points in Korea)

To add to this you can track KnY's television performance on this site. Its comparable to Dragon Ball Super.

Dragonball Super is a super rerun though. It's original run was years ago. Not saying Demon Slayer is not popular, but the ratings have been declining on tv for years now and the lead for the block almost always holds the most viewers, usually thanks to Family Guy, but they've changed that recently.

Like to give an example of how things have changed for tv ratings in general, here's 2017 during Super's original run.

Comparable to a rerun. DBS was doing around 1M back in it's first run. This was towards the end of the Future Trunks arc.

All you need to know is that Kimetsu no Yaiba is incredibly popular worldwide. The movie did fantastic in the US and basically did better than any My Hero or Dragon Ball movie did. In china season 1 of the anime had crazy views as well.

Kimetsu is comparable to the usual big shonen jump series in the West.

Also the movie comparison in the US is kind of off since DBS Broly was super restricted in theater availability for seemingly no reason. It was kneecapped from the start.

Not doubting Demon Slayer isn't big but Dragon Ball and Naruto are still over it.

idk how much this would affect movie popularity, but isn't the Demon Slayer movie canon? The Naruto and Dragon Ball movies are all filler stories, right?

Super movies (Plus Battle of Gods/Resurrection F) are all canon. Naruto The Last was canon.

Don't know if there's a source for this, but I remember reading something from the head of CC2 saying most anime games only need 100K to break even, anyone knows where that came from?

KnY is like the ultimate canon because it adapts an arc from the manga page for page. Movies don't ever do that (for the most part)

edit: I mean you have to actually watch the movie before season 2, as you'll miss an entire story line if you dont

The FFXVI ex-JP sales doom and gloom is odd

This is the first mainline Final Fantasy of a new generation. Why would it decline to 5 million LTD? Yeah it's exclusive to PS5 but how much did XV even sell on XBO?

Not to mention we might see FFXIV players crossover with the team behind it.

Finally if the quality of XIV expansions is anything to go by...we may get out first 90+ reviewed mainline FF in decades...

I do wonder how FFXVI vs FFVII-R2 sales will look like

Seminar Talk at Creek and River by CyberConnect2’s Matsuyama Hiroshi | Fire Sanctuary

The CEO of CyberConnect 2, Matsuyama Hiroshi, held a really interesting seminar for game creators and those interested in the topic. Although, I am hardly part of the industry, the interest and passion has always been there. I was able to attend this event, although I arrived a little after it...

100k sales for every game needed in order to break even means Matsuyama is the one that has to attend a seminar for basic economics.

Yeah I think we will see FFXVI see growth in the west and a big decline in Japan.

FFXIII and XV both got over a million from xbox, and over a million from PC despite very late ports. It would be miraculous if it doesnt decline.

Not only Xbox, but the loss of a PC version will have an impact. If they announce a PC version leading up to launch it will be a lot better though.

Our last known figure on FF7R is around 5 million, and that's a game that had numerous factors in its favor. Years of hype for a remake of FF7, great reviews, people bored and shut home during lockdowns, also 1 million of that came from Japan which will be a lower number for XVI.

Covid hurt this VIIR, though. That's what people has said in this thread.

It did? Is this reported somewhere? I know S-E had trouble with physical shipments being late due to supply chain issues from COVID. But I also remember digital on the game being massive.
It's the opposite. We got reports from retailers around launch that COVID and the lockdown boosted preorder numbers.
I know, I'm joking. I remember someone saying that lockdown hurt FF VIIR in q Famitsu thread.

If FFXVI is a decline for the series(Which is something I also think it will happen), then a sales decline in the JP market would be felt even further. FF XV and VIIR were > 1 million sales in Japan alone. Could a decline to, let's say, 800-600k be offset with overseas sales? I really don't know what to expect from XVI. Maybe, if the title truly is good and Yoshi P delivers, the WoM will let it have better legs.

Also, Lost Judgement is releasing this tuesday and yet I barely see any discussions about it, even here on ERA. Not a good prospect IMO.

That's not exactly an indication of a game's sales performance, the gaming side of the internet is a bubble most of the time. Mind you, I don't think the game will do that great either way.
Pokemon DLC all over again! 😂
The fact reviews are out and barely anything was heard is quite off-putting IMO. It's like not even a blip is showing regarding interest in this game. But maybe it's Pokémon SS story all over again. Internet doesn't translate to real-life.
That thread about the rumours regarding the agency and lack of PC version is more interesting than the game itself.
That's true too. Damn shame for the PC version. There's also the seemingly exit of Nagoshi to NetEase, if Bloomberg scoop is confirmed. Sad that he won't be able to do a Yakuza City Hunter.

Wasn't there a story quite a while ago that Judgment was a series with no future anyway because the main actor's talent agency won't allow a PC version?

He doesn't throw out specific development numbers but says $4-5 million is not enough for modern game development, going over-budget on past projects, needing more staff and spending more time on expected big sellers.

The 100k number doesn't seem at all practical. Feels like it's missing nuance.

using western sale prices and retailer cuts, $42*100K isn't exactly a huge budgeted game. and these days, I kinda doubt it would pay for their Demon Slayer

Well I think he was excluding his company game, though it's not like there games are AAA.

I think he was mainly referring to anime licensed games.
If you read the article for the seminar he presented the slides were saying this:

- 424 new games were released in 2017
- Famitsu had 40 of them selling over 100k physical in Japan
- A game needs to sell at least 100k to break even
- That means only the first 40 were profitable and 41-424 were in red losing money for their companies

Go figure, even some posts from trolls in here make more sense. He put literally all games in the same basket ignoring everything about them.

This feels like a joke, but then I remember this is the same company that made a market research, determined that 70-90% of the objective public for a Kimetsu no Yaiba game was on Switch and decided to put the game everywhere except there.

The seminar had some interesting info but If Matsuyama was the one writing it it's a miracle CyberConnect2 still exists. Not that if he just did the presentation and couldn't understand what he was showing makes him look better.

Let's hope those watching him didn't have to pay.

I think FF16 is a real big question mark in terms of sales potential. I don't think that it will land in the typical FF sales range of 7-9m. The game seems too big of a departure from what people typically expect from a FF game on top of the exclusivity.

As people pointed out, the game has the vibes of the Ivalice part of the franchise and these are typically less popular.
The gameplay seems like a further departure from series standards. It makes transitioning expectations from one game to another difficult. I don't know if people playing FF14 or even FF7R (which seems closer in terms of gameplay) will respond to the game play changes. I for myself was very stoked once we got confirmation who is in the driver's seat, because the team seems to really cherish the brand. I became completely depleted once I saw that it doesn't automatically translate to a more traditional take on the franchise.

Therefore I think the game will either decline or gain a whole new playerbase.

But in reality we still know almost nothing about the game.

If you would have showed me gameplay of FF16 and nothing else, I would have thought it was a game in the same vein as DMC and Bayonetta. Never would I guess a final fantasy game, and that may not go over well, or might attract a completely different audience

The last figure is from August 2020.
