New Pokémon Snap launch is four times bigger than original | UK Boxed Charts

New Pokémon Snap has topped the UK physical retail charts in its debut week. The Switch game sold over four times as man…

The Switch game sold over four times as many copies at launch than the original managed, which reached No.9 way back in September 2000. The first game arrived in the middle of Pokémon mania, however it was an N64 title, which was a console that struggled to sell in the UK (1.5 million N64s had been sold compared with 5.4 million PlayStations). Over time Pokémon Snap went on to become a decent hit for the console.

[...]

It is the third biggest Switch launch of the year behind Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Monster Hunter Rise.

The photography game was also comfortably ahead of No.2, which was another new release in the form of PS5 exclusive Returnal.

Sony's roguelike game is the first significant PS5 title to release at retail since launch, and it reviewed strongly. However, its launch sales are below what we've seen from previous AAA PlayStation exclusives. Of course there are more than a few caveats to consider: the PS5 is still in its early days in terms of install base, the game's price is high (its average selling price was £68), it faces stiff competition from next week's Resident Evil: Village and it's in a niche genre.

And as with all PS5 games, we should expect sales to rise and fall as more consoles come to market.

Last week's No.1, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, drops all the way down to No.22 after a 78% fall in sales week-on-week.

It was a good week for retail overall, with over 180,000 games sold. There were a number of game sales that rose week-on-week, including Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury at No.3 (sales up 10%), Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.4 (up 6%), Minecraft on Switch at No.7 (up 7%), GTA 5 at No.8 (up 23%), Ring Fit Adventure at No.9 (up 6%) and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at No.10 (up 20%). The only two games to fall in sales in the Top Ten were Animal Crossing: New Horizons at No.5 (down 7%) and FIFA 21 at No.6 (down 23%).

Hoping Returnal's performance isn't indicative of a trend and that it does much better elsewhere

New Pokémon Snap surprised me, I know it's Pokémon and all but I didn't think the genre would fly that well.

Returnal being number 2 is a good start, but it sounded like the numbers hit less than 10K. hope it does better digitally

There may well be other factors at play but for me, and I assume many like me, Returnal is just too expensive. We've become accustomed to relatively swift price drops on many Sony first party titles anyway and regardless, I can't ever justify spending what Sony wants me to with this gen's prices.

I do really hope Returnal sells well. It's a bloody amazing game and Hoursearque deserves the success

It is a good result for Returnal, all things considered. However, Returnal is one of those games that will need a strong WOM in order not to sink like a stone, unfortunately I fear that the whole save-state/patch controversy will end up affecting its performance considerably. It's a shame because Returnal is an excellent game, one of the best of the year so far.

I wish Housemarque all the best but in all honesty I hope £70RRP titles fail miserably at retail.

RE8 seems to have had a solid first day anecdotally speaking. Expecting a huge % in favour of PS at retail. Mostly PS4 with the odd PS5 but not much movement on Xbox. It's also at a good normal price point which will only be helping.

New Pokemon Snap deserves all the success it can get. Seriously, the game is a gem that is perfect for relaxing casual play while having tons of secrets for the completionists.

9,000 units of Returnal on launch week?

Whelp, that's not great. I really wish Housemarque the best with this one, as I said in the other thread, it's my current GOTY.

The £70 price tag is not helping that's for sure.
I agree. I reckon we're not getting price cuts for last year's games because PS5 is hard to come by and selling out so perhaps Sony is just keeping the prices high to get these early adopters. There'll probably be more sale prices once the system is widely available. Let's face it, a lot of Sony titles sell big numbers at sale prices, so unless they want to take a hit on total sell through for games compared to PS4 gen, they're gonna need some decent price cuts. In the short term, I don't see this happening (at least not until the end of this year or sometime next year to begin with.

It was always going to be a tough sell at £70. It's not the worst result for Housemarque all things considered.

They need to fix the technical issues so word of mouth stays strong and ensure they time a sale for the game around a big drop of console stock later this year.

Considering the PS5's low install base and Returnal's more niche appeal, it's performance seems fine to me. A lot of folk who still want a PS5 haven't been able to get their hands on one, like myself, and I'm sure plenty of us would be down to get Returnal when we finally get one. I can see it being one of those games that slowly sells for the first year or so as more folk are able to get the system

From the other thread, it's about half the sales of Demon's Souls, so it's not an install base thing.

Roguelike game + absurdly expensive price + RE8 releasing close. It's still sold well enough if you ask me.

Yeah. I think Sony should have had different tiers with their new pricing. Like new Last of Us/Spiderman/God of War will sell just fine even with increased price but they should have kept the old pricing for these bit smaller scale unknown new IPs. I think new Ratchet is too borderline case that does the increased price hurt its launch sales. obviously if it hurts only a bit then they make more money even with lower sales.

Well do we have numbers for other titles comparable to Returnal? maybe other new IPs and not Monhun, Pokemon, or Spider-man/TLOU/GOW

Also how did Nier 1.22 do?

What games would you compare Returnal with ? It is a pretty unique game, not a ton of comparison point.

Nier 1.22 did half of what Automata did so around 4000-5000 units. Around/below Bravely Default II to take another JRPG on the same scale.

JRPG sales are however not a meaningful indicator in thz UK tho.

I feel like people are just comparing it to Pokemon Snap which is a little unfair considering it's Pokemon lol.

But I also dunno how new IPs or roguelike titles typically performed in UK haha

New IPs can perform very well, the early PS4 ones did great. Non-indie roguelikes don't happen often at all, so we don't have a comparison point either there.

It depends entirely on the IP. Horizon debuted to somewhere around 100,000 copies I believe. Something like The Division or Destiny debuted to hundreds of thousands of copies in the UK. But we're comparing apples and oranges here.

Debuting to 9,000 sales in the UK basically means you're near niche status.

Did Hades do well in UK? though I suppose Hades released on PC first so it's not really comparable either.

Well I'd say Returnal is niche indeed. Hope Sony has realistic expectation lol

for a physical release of an indie game that's been out for a long time, i think hades did pretty well.

edit: digitally, it of course did amazingly well.
