PS5 dominates boxed charts led by Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut | UK Charts

PlayStation 5 exclusives dominated the UK boxed charts this week, taking the first, second and third spot. The best sell…

The best selling-game of the week was Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut. The updated and upgraded version of last year's hit action game also saw a re-release on PS4, but 91% of sales were for the PS5 version.

This was followed very closely by Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The PS5 exclusive rose eight places thanks to a 105% increase in sales week-on-week.

Third spot belongs to a game from the same developer as Ratchet & Clank -- Spider-Man: Miles Morales -- which saw a 92% sales spike, taking the game to No.3.

It means last week's No.1, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, drops to No.4 despite only a slight 4% drop in sales week-on-week.

The new release of the week was Madden NFL 22, which debuts at No.19 in the charts. The American football title's sales are 47% lower than the launch week of last year's game. However, this chart only tracks boxed sales, so it's not clear how well the game truly performed (we'll find out later in the week). 49% of its sales came on PS5, followed by 32% on PS4, 13% on Xbox One and 7% on Xbox Series X/S.

Returnal not jumping back into the top 40 after a PS5 restock is depressing.
At this point, its gonna be like Demon's Souls. Only on PSN charts we may see it again, but thats it.

Cot dayum at the 1-3 spots being PS5 games.

Madden's platform spilt is....wild.... I know this game isnt on EA Play, is it?

Week after week these charts release and prove the narrative that new games need to be cross-gen because install base on the old console is bigger dead wrong

Cross-gen split at launch != Cross-gen split after months of sales

Cross-gen split in the UK != Cross-gen split WW

I mean, just look at the Spanish chart Bruno posted.

It's a really niche game new IP. Seeing R&C and Spiderman moving back up is great to see, meaning more people are consuming/adopting the new generation of software.
It is niche, but those games sitting in the 30-40 range are only selling a few copies. I suppose if Demons Souls isn't selling, neither will Returnal. It's a shame.

I can't say for certain as I haven't visited the UK in a while, but Returnal was not advertised heavy in my area. Probably part of the reason why it isn't selling a lot with the uptick in PS5 stock.

Returnal is such a small game in the grand scheme of things, there's no surprise it isnt charting 4 months after launch.

And while it was expensive by housemargue standards it probably was still rather cheap game by your usual modern Sony first party standards. I don't think Sony would had mentioned its sales otherwise.

I think the main objective for Sony was to have a game, early in the Ps5 lifecycle, with a great reception. Housemarque managed to pull it, they were bought, the game sales are secondary now.

Was it even charting one month after launch?

I wonder..has Sony even had a hit game released at 80€ so far?

Miles was cheaper. Ratchet's legs are relatively average. Seems like it sells good when more PS5 bundles are released tbh.

I'm sure once Horizon or GoW release that will change

that too. While obviously in most cases your biggest target is simply to make as much money as possible with game sales for platforms holders there are other reasons too that can make them happy. Critical acclaim that boosts the image of the console, targetting some niche high spending base to get those on your console etc. There are some other examples too like Last Guardian during last gen or something like Bayonetta 2 and many more.

The handwringing over Returnal is getting old. The game sold well for what it is and reviewed amazingly, it's hard to see this game as anything but a big success for Housemarque and Sony.

Really the 1st party PS5 game whose legs (or lack thereof) are worth raising an eyebrow over is Demon's Souls.

I don't think the 80€ price tag is helping some of their games yeah. Ratchet seems to be selling mainly through bundles than individual copies for instance.

I don't expect it to be an issue for their bigger guns but if they want to nurture a diverse line-up, they'll have to adapt their pricing imho. That next-gen price increase is felt more vivdly in Europe than the US.

Don't see how. Seems pretty consistent in terms of digital sales.

5th best selling game on PS5 in 2020, only suprassed by COD, Spider-Man, Assassin's Creed and NBA/FIFA in US/EU respectively.

After that it was always between 8-15 positions in both US and EU.

Physically it was frequently the best selling PS5 game in germany (over Miles Morales).

Also it should be confortably over 1M copies sold at this point which seems more than fine for a remake, and it'll keep selling.

Interesting we got all that info today. I might have expected that next week, but I suppose this is the window for such announcements. Wonder what else SIE might have to talk about next week during the quarterly report other than revenue/profit and PS Plus numbers.

Even that 1.5m estimate for a PS3 remake seems sort of low given the franchise, pedigree, timing and resources involved. New Souls games do like 10m+ now and this release was the core launch darling with the full promotional backing of PlayStation. We see remasters and remakes from companies like Capcom, Activision or Nintendo doing multimillions in less time with less resources behind them in slower periods.

Having real shipment figures would help though, Sony's not doing perception any favors here.

How is it low when you only have like 10M PS5 sold at this point?

Besides Dark Souls 3 only did 10m+ after 4 years because it was on multiple platforms and had great legs on Steam. It was at ~3.2M sold with ~50k reviews (we know because of a Steam leak) and when it was announced it sold over 10M it had ~110k reviews.

Sekiro sold 5M in a year on 3 platforms for example.

Regarding resources, this was a <2 years project and the changes they made were essentially about the overall presentation (visuals, animations and sound) and adding QOL features (not trying to downplay BP and JPStudios work, which was great). I think you might be overestimating the scale of the project.

10m PS5s is a ceiling yes but the dynamics at launch (captive audience, more core focused, less software competition) should play into DeSouls' favor logically too. I just figured this sort of game would chart better as the system grew, but it basically vanished after launch.

As far as the scale of the project, was it less than stuff like Crash N-Sane Trilogy or Skyward Sword HD? I dunno, even Dark Souls Remastered likely sold more and had far less put into it regarding the update or promotion.

I fully expect a triple back in PS5 bundle come the holiday season with Miles, Returnal and Ratchet or some variation of the 3.

There's no need for Sony to make that kind of bundles given how the PS5 is selling out.

Unless you mean a bundle like Ratchet at the price of the PS5 + the three mentionned games ? (So 700€ for the DD version)

Not surprised by the Aliens no. 1, probably a slow week in terms of total sales and the impressions had been pretty positive about it all the way up to release. The other releases last week were niche and/or on Gamepass, and Aliens had a budget price.

I like the game myself, and it seems like most of the people in the OT are having fun with it as well.

Surprised to see Madden in the top 20 in England. Didn't know the NFL is getting popular there, after NFL Europe went under.
