Not as indie, no. They're extremely popular and on a subsidiary of a major label.
I remember finding them in 2009 or 10. That album was fucking amazing. Then it took like 8 years for a new release from their last album in 2010 and it was totally disappointing... :( Least you didn't have to endure that wait lol.
Excellent thread! I love finding some good japanese indiesque stuff, there is a radio station called "Friends Forever" that plays some excellent hidden stuff.
I still kick myself for not seeing them when I had the chance, I hope they play sometime again near me.

That one includes influences of Math Rock and Jazz and damn does it work. The drumming is so incredible on this.

Yeah same here, missed them twice and the shows that I missed were apparently really fucking good too.
You can never get too obsessed with Japanese Shoegaze
That one is an Idol Shoegaze band. Before that they were called Dotstokyo and made a single that was 73 minutes long and had 50 minutes of Harsh Noise.
Plus there is a vocaloid Shoegaze album that actually rules

Number Girl. Well, they were extremly popular back in the day so maybe not that underrated, at least in Japan. They actually started doing lives again (band broke up in early 00s).

Well alright, was wanting to make sure Thee Michelle Gun Elephant was mentioned. RIP Futoshi Abe - one of my top 5 guitarists.
Too tired to post a bunch of songs by them but maybe check out Supercar. Some good songs are "Wonder word", "Lucky" and "Nijiro Darkness" but there are ton more.
Do Polysics count? They have been around forever, I got into them around my first Japan visit in '99…but I still listen to them.
