How can you make a list like this and not put Levan Polkka in the top 10?

On international player's anthem:

"The influence of Houston's UGK is felt all over hip-hop, from Jay-Z to Megan Thee Stallion, but it took 20 years for the group to record the song that truly solidified its place in the canon."

What tomfoolery is this? I admit international player's anthem is one of my favorite ugk songs but it's as much an OutKast song as well. They had bangers that made them "part of the canon" well before International players anthem. This sounds like it was written by someone that only caught a feature on big pimpin. Ridin Dirty is a classic and One Day got crazy radio play as a single.

This list is so ridiculous from the outset:

492. "So What" by Miles Davis
491. "Welcome To The Jungle" by Guns N Roses
490. "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X

Like come on...

Yeah the apology *ahem* I mean explanation of the process at the beginning said they were trying to diversify more because the previous list was mostly rock. I think they overcorrected or they weren't equipped to include anything other than singles they recently heard from other artists.

Like that lizzo song is catchy no doubt but so was that Transplants song that also appeared in a shitton of shampoo commercials. I wouldn't rate either as top 500.

Damn, pretty impressive how 99 of the top 100 songs are all in English!

Sarcasm aside, I can't with these lists that are about "THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME" and are only American/UK stuff.

Missy Elliott feels way overrepresented on this list. Like someone influential to the list was really gunning for her or something.

Rolling Stone making a list like this is so stupid. Even the discussion it creates is pointless.

I know they were trying to broaden the scope beyond the usual favorites, but I'm kind of amazed there's only *one* Radiohead song. No Paranoid Android? Jigsaw Falling Into Place? Fake Plastic Trees? Not even Creep?

edit: nvm, I found a text list elsewhere and I guess my mobile browser had choked on the full thing because there are actually three RH tracks, including Creep (#118) and Idioteque (#48). Still surprised at the lack of Paranoid Android, though.

Bumping this because I missed it when searching

I agree with a lot of the modern takes in the top 100, despite this list always being an impossible to please feat, they kinda pander a bit to radio hits but for their era all these songs were everywhere

I will never get hey ya out of my head and I'm only 28

But yeah you can see the radio influence immediately from the get go

If you intend to create a top anything list, you should be required to exclude everything from the past 5 years.

Recency bias is wicked strong.

Mostly everything on the list is good to great but my list would still look like 99% different

There's a lot of good music out there

Totally agree, but it isn't that surprising when you see how the list is very focused on big popular songs. Radiohead is a popular band, but they don't have many songs that are hits known in wider circles except Creep. I was at least expecting Paranoid Android though..

And if you want to go with Kid A choosing Idioteque over Everything in it's right place is certainly a choice..

There is one Paul Simon song - American Tune (262). Simon and Garfunkel have Sounds of Silence (182) and Bridge Over Troubled Water (66).

Fast Car is 71.

IIRC Rolling Stone has always had more artists/musicians submitting lists in these polls than critics.

edit: anyone else think its funny that they have Lil Nas X but not Nas on this list anywhere?

Is that the only Lizzo song that made the list? Because if it is, it should have been replaced by this one:

While I don't think Hey Ya! should break the top 10, I don't mind that it's there, haha. Honestly, it's a perfect hit.

The list is weird. Some mediocre songs from some great artists. It's fair to say people will just argue a song they like more should have made it instead of a different song, but there are some that are just legit poor choices. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" isn't even a top 15 Beatles song, much less a top 15 of all time song. If they were only going to put 2 Ramones songs in the top 500, I'm glad "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" was one of them. I don't HATE the top 50. Some solid placements in there and some head scratchers. And somehow, not a single George Harrison (solo) song?

Imagine putting "Fight the Power" over "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos".

Imagine putting "Tiny Dancer" over "Your Song".

Imagine burying "Shook Ones, Part II" at 215.

You can throw a rock at the tracklist for Sgt. Pepper's and hit a better song than "Strawberry Fields Forever".

Azealia Banks is on this shit and My Bloody Valentine isn't.

I'm too lazy to go through the entire thing and I can't find any articles with the full list laid out in plain text.

Did Nelly Furtado make it in?

Sound of Silence, American Tune and Bridge Over Troubled Water are all on the list. Sound of Silence is at 182 which is pretty damn low.

Love the Top 5 but man it just shows how utterly useless these lists are for an individual.
Searched many of my favourite congs and acts and got no results.

OP really should have included how this list was made because it then better highlights why it's so random in spots:

More than 250 artists, journalists, and industry figures — from Megan Thee Stallion to U2's the Edge to Yaya Bey — helped determine the all-new list

Voters were asked to submit ranked ballots listing their 50 favorite songs of all time. Votes were tabulated, with the highest-ranked album on each list receiving 300 points, the second highest 290 points, and so on down to 44 points for number 50. More than 4,000 albums received at least one vote.

Didn't Kurt Cobain hate "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? For the longest time, it was the song that made me think that Nirvana is overrated af, until I heard some of their other songs. Also, "Bombs Over Baghdad" is a much better song than "Hey Ya". In fact, "Hey Ya" is Outkast's worst song, though I do like it. As for "Dreams", I'd say that's a solid choice, but I also would have accepted "Landslide" or "Chains".

Edit: I don't understand the hate for "Strawberry Fields Forever". I thought most Beatles fans loved it? Any other choice would have been fine, though if there were any other choice, I'd go with "Dear Prudence".

The Replacements - Left of the Dial

Interesting choice out of all their songs.

I always find these lists silly with a mishmash of genres. How could anyone whose musical tastes that tend to lean towards any particular genre be satisfied?
'Strawberry Fields Forever' isn't even the best Beatles song. :P
Fleetwood Mac's Dreams is probably my favorite song in the top 10. There are good songs in the top ten but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them: movie soundtracks or shuffled playlists, why not?

I can't go through this nonsense but I'm curious if there's anything in a language other than English.
Didn't see anything in the top 50 at least.
