First time, I've seen a major technology industry executive say this. Remember AMD makes the chips for both the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

"The majority of our revenue in semi-custom is game consoles. If you were to look at any of the console generation charts, by the time you get to the seventh year in the console cycle, units usually drop double digits or in that range. And that's sort of the view that we have."

Dropping down because people expect a newer console in less than a year?

I dunno. I think this cycle is going to be a bit different due to the mid-cycle refreshes, along with a late newcomer to the game (Switch). While all signs point to 2020 for next gen, I don't see the same downturn happening like last year as long as the biggies keep on getting released on these systems. I might even go on a limb and say it's going to take next gen a year to get the same steam as previous generations

I mean, no shit with a new generation most likely being announced this year, lol. Nobody's gonna be running out to buy PS4s and Xbox Ones.

Switch sales will mitigate the decline a bit though.

Yes products do have sales curves. I feel Sony will aim for a spring release for PS5. Will squeeze one more holiday season out of PS4.

If PS4 has sold 91 and X1 41.

Thats 132 million sold.

Last gen had the 360 and the PS3 sold about 160mill by 2012 and there was also the wii.

So have about 30million moved to PC? Or or the console market shrunk?

Double digits just means 10% at minimum

So for PS4 selling what 18M last year, that would take off what, 1.8-2M?

Of course it could be much more idk

30 million are consumers who got in at cheap prices, people who no longer game, people who bought WiiUs and no other platforms, people who moved to PC/mobile, people who went single platform, people who didnt have to replqce as many dead consoles, and people who jumped in for single gen.

There was a similar contraction in overall numbers from the PS2/GC/XBOX generation to last gen as well.

The Wii U was a huge bomb, switch starting to make up for that, xbone will never catch 360. Ps4 will probably end up a bit better than ps3. Yes, the home console market has shrunk from last gen but last gen was pretty fucking nuts. But yeah PC and mobile has cut some sales vs last gen I'd say.

Xbox 360 had an extra year since it came out in 2005. thats 7 years for the Xbox 360, and 6 for Xbox One in your calculations.

Actually, Five because you are not counting this year's sales. And actually your numbers are all wrong. IIRC, the PS3 and Xbox 360 were at 80 million each at the end of 2013, not 2012. thats 7 years for PS3, 8 for Xbox One.

PS4 should still sell 20 million units by the end of 2020 which should be 7 years since its launch. Xbox should hit 50 million easily. that puts us at 160 million with one fewer year.

They also said Ps4 and Xbox One combined are way in excess of over 120m units shipped.
I'm paraphrasing here.

This basically confirms a 2020 release for both consoles. AMD knows they won't launch this year and this would lead to an overall decline due to ending of the generation.

Xbox 1 and PS4 is pretty much end of life. Would be more surprised if sales go up. Not even the Switch can offset this, maybe.

Does that mean even the switch growth can't keep it in the single digit decline ? Well, 2019 is going to be a rough year when compared to 2018 and all its record breaking numbers

That makes the 360 8 yrs old.

I think anyone who remotely keeps up with gaming in terms of how the gens run figure PS5 and Xbox whatever is coming out next year, so if you haven't jumped on the fence at this point......maybe if Sony does a hard drop to $199 you'll catch a final wave of people buying in at that price point but otherwise, this isn't exactly going out on a limb.

Even if PS4 sales fall by 10% that's still a ton of money. Seems like a waste to pass it up. IMO drop some huge games like TLOU2, give the console a price cut, do some big software sales, and they'll be golden til 2020.

Disagree, these are tech/hardware people who do not understand the appeal of 199 or even 149 dollar/euro hardware on the public. They only think in OneX or PS4Pro terms. Those have petered out so surely the market is dead in their oppinion.
