As a long-time Battlefield fan who has poured 1000s of hours into the series, I can't help but feel disappointed in this game. The beta was a buggy mess with the worst UI I have experienced in gaming and it's clear the game won't be ready at launch which is par for the course with Dice at this point. But somehow this is not even the thing that concerns me the most. The game is fundamentally flawed and doesn't feel like Battlefield at all. It's very clear that they were inspired by Warzone and it shows. The game feels more like a shitty unplayable version of Warzone than it does Battlefield.

  1. The movement system is completely off. Battlefield V had one of the best movement systems in the FPS genre and Battlefield 2042's movement somehow doesn't even feel as good as Battlefield 4. Grapplehook doesn't belong in a game like Battlefield and it's clearly resulted in the majority of people using Mackay due to how overpowered it is. It also doesn't feel good to use. Soldiers run way too fast and the movement feels a bit floaty compared to past games. This movement speed also makes gunplay less fun since moving targets are more difficult to take down, especially with the lack of proper aim assist on consoles.
  2. The gunplay is off. The guns have minimal recoil, ridiculous bullet velocity, range, and feel like lasers. It feels like I am playing COD here, not Battlefield. Battlefield V had some of the best gunplay in gaming. They just had to build off of that. Instead, they decided to work with COD gunplay that clearly doesn't work in a game like Battlefield with massive maps. I felt like I was being killed from insanely long distances. And the worst part is, while the gunplay resembles COD, it doesn't have the same responsiveness or crisp feeling to it. It's somehow worse. Battlefield 3/4/1/V all had much better gunplay. And Battlefield 3 had some major issues with suppression and Battlefield 1 with random bullet deviation. Aiming feels completely off on consoles. It's like there is almost no aim assist on controllers.
  3. The specialist system does not work at all. And it's not just because of the character design that makes it impossible to differentiate between friendlies and enemies. It's the fact that there are no distinct classes and the game has pretty much eliminated any semblance of teamwork and squad play. Everyone runs around like headless chickens, lonewolfing and looking for kills. ZERO TEAMWORK. I never thought the series would get to this point but here we are. This was one of the core features of the franchise and now it's completely gone. You don't have to rely on your teammates for anything. The specialist system further promotes COD-like gameplay. No more distinct, teamwork-related roles to play here.
  4. The map is absolutely massive, ridiculously open with a very noticeable lack of cover, and defeats the purpose of having an increased player count of 128 players. The movement may feel fast and floaty but the game still plays slow and sometimes halts to a complete stop. This is some of the worst pacing I have experienced in Battlefield and a multiplayer FPS. The new sector system doesn't work or make sense. Orbital is way too large and way too open. I was getting shot from all sorts of random angles. Hell, I could see most enemy players as tiny figures far away at most times because of how open and large the map is. There wasn't enough cover to make map traversal feel strategic and enjoyable without being shot from multiple directions and distances of 50-100 meters. It takes ages to traverse from one flag to another without encountering any action. The firefights mostly clustered around a few capture points. This makes objective play tedious and unenjoyable. It's better to stick around a cluster of flags and hope that the enemy still holds 1 or 2 nearby flags so the gameplay doesn't stop. This map was clearly not designed around conquest. Maybe it was made for Breakthrough or Hardzone. But it's one of the smaller maps and it plays like absolute shit. This does not bode well for the other maps. Dice will need to completely redesign flag placement and make some major changes to map design to make it work on conquest.
  5. The spawning is atrocious. This is the most I have died in any multiplayer FPS right after spawning. In fact, the majority of my deaths felt like they were within 10 seconds of spawning. Spawning on top of the roof, around the rocket and the 2 flags in the middle literally felt like a death trap. A lot of my kills were also from enemies spawning right in front of me. Worst spawning system I have seen yet in a multiplayer FPS. How much time and effort did they put in here?
  6. The vehicles are ridiculously overpowered and feel like shit to use. I died more from helicopters and tanks than anything else. I felt like there was no effective counter here. The rock, paper, scissors balance formula that Dice had mastered with Battlefield 4 was thrown out the window here. It was open season on infantry players. But the worse part of it, the vehicles don't even feel as good to use as Battlefield 4, 1, and V. They lack weight. They lack the same feeling as past Battlefield games. They feel more like Warzone vehicles. The passenger seat weapons on vehicles feel utterly useless. At least on controllers. The vehicle balance is completely fucked here.
All of these core flaws will take to months to address after launch and I highly doubt they ever will considering that this game doesn't seem to be designed to play like a Battlefield game. I was expecting something like Battlefield V without attrition and brought to the modern era with the sandbox we had in Battlefield 4 but with some innovations. Instead, it feels like a really shitty version of warzone without any of the fun aspects. And I would also like to reiterate how broken this game is from the technical aspect. There was so much rubberbanding, enemies not taking damage, being shot from behind cover, and a shit ton of other bugs and glitches. The game felt unplayable on PS5 on the last day. It saddens me to know that this will be the first Battlefield game I will be skipping since Hardline. This was was my most anticipated game by a longshot and it's absolute dumpster fire as of now. I hope they rework it from the ground up after launch if EA is too greedy to delay it. A polished Portal experience is the only possible saving grace of this game. But I am not counting on that either. I will definitely cancel my preorder. The biggest disappointment in gaming I have experienced so far. I imagine this is what a lot of Cyberpunk fans felt last year.

The idea of releasing a 'beta' one month before launch never sits well with me. I'm not really sure how else this could have gone. The game is just not ready for a 2021 launch.

Months old broken ass build with half the features turned off. Kind of a bold move to put that beta out. Personally I had a lot of fun with it, but it was rough enough that I can see it chasing some away from considering getting this game next month.

It was really bad, specially the performance.

I bought the Razer Blade 15 with RTX 3070 and the first game I tried was the beta of Battlefield and I thought my laptop was broken due the bad performance, then I tried on my main rig with 2070 Super and the performance was bad as well.

Didnt you just post this in the beta thread?
I thought my post was very long and throughout so I wanted to make a separate thread about it and discuss my experience with others who had a bad experience too. The Battlefield series is my all-time favorite in gaming and I wanted to express my disappointment and frustrations with this game.

I was shocked at DICE abandoning pretty much every principle that made Battlefield what it is, as a franchise

In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have been. BFV didn't sell well and a ton of the talent that made the studio what it is has left.

They're going to mindlessly chase CoD in a much more direct way from here on out.

I went from it being my most hyped game to incredibly underwhelmed. I won't go on and beat a dead horse, but the specialist system is at the core of the game's problems. There are others, but that stands out to me as the worst.

I can't remember a single battlefield after maybe 2 that was good at launch. The beta's have all been a total mess sadly.

I didn't even play it long enough to form many coherent thoughts about the gameplay because the UI was so atrociously bad. I know DICE are renowned at this point for their bad/clunky UI experience, but this was something else. I couldn't even say 'yeah I see what they were going for, they just didn't quite nail it' - almost every decision related to the UI just had me like 'what the fuck were they thinking?'

It made me appreciate previous BF games. Bought that bundle of BF games on Steam for cheap. Don't think I need 2042 at least not on day 1.

Absolutely loved the beta, even with its wild bugs. I know most of the big issues will be fixed so Im all in for release. It had me feeling like I was back playing BF3 at launch without a care in the world.

In a way they wanted to have actual beta, but then this should have been out few months ago and now with updated build.

I went into the beta with the Gold Edition preordered, came out with getting the preorder refunded on Steam.

The specialist system is really bad. It feels like a concession to sell DLC characters and skins that just hurts the game overall, and brings nothing positive to the table itself. Classes feel less distinct and you can't tell who anyone is - and team play is severely lessoned due to it.

I don't know that I've ever seen a community universally pan a mechanic of a game like I've seen people pan specialists in BF2042. It's actually quite something to see. I don't feel like I've seen anyone have anything positive to say about specialists at all.

It felt so lifeless, and it didn't even feel like a new game. Past BF betas always felt new and exciting, but as soon as I started playing this one, it felt like I played it before. And the stuff that normally grabs me from DICE games, such as the visuals and music, were nonexistent here.

Although in the 2010s, the management and decision making in DICE has been very questionable. one thing was clear: the artists and programmers working there were the best in the industry. Did they leave after SWBF2 and BFV ended? or is this a case of management once again making bad decisions, like saying to abandon everything about BFV, including the care that went into music and visuals and mechanics, simply because it didn't perform to a bean counter's expectations?

The spawning was not the worst thing about the game but it was by far the most infuriating thing. This feels like a solved problem in the BF series! You get to see the view of the squadie or vehicle you choose to spawn in on, otherwise you spawn just outside of a control point in relative safety. Now neither of those are true. Spawn protection has never been a thing this series has needed, because if you spawned into combat you knew the risk. There simply isn't that anymore, since for whatever reason you always spawn in the middle of the capture area. Ridiculous. After the 6th or 12th or 47th time I spawned in front of a guy who immediately killed me, I went from "this game seems really rough" to "actually fuck this game".

All they had to do was build on BFV's gameplay. That game's movement and gunplay are excellent and things like squad revive, attrition, and squad points really incentivized teamplay. BF 2042 takes multiple steps back on all of those fronts.

I guess it's kind of unusal to have a beta that's actually still feels like a game very much in development. With how soon the game is coming out they really need to clean up a lot of elements

I thought it was fine? It's not perfect by any means, but it more or less still played like Battlefield. Having so many issues with the attachments, map not working, and the wonky ping system still aren't good looks for the final product though. I don't understand the large map complaints either, I never had any trouble with finding engagements, and isn't the downtime between fighting/capturing points part of the appeal of Battlefield?

Granted, I've only ever been a casual fan of the series, so that might play a part in my opinions on the beta.

As someone who loved BFV, this feels like kind of a downgrade to me:
- fortfications are gone and as someone who always play Engineer and love building all sort of useful things in V, it totally sucks.
- reinforcements are gone (and those were good incentives to play better)
- not sure if it will be in the game but the Beta hadn't Squad Leaders, don't know why (maybe because the Commo Rose wasn't included in the Beta)
- attrition is gone (controversial but it added depth to Battlefield in my opinion)
- the gameplay / gunplay is inferior (crounch sprining is gone, manual leaning is gone, supine stance is gone, rolling is gone, revive animation from BFV is gone...)
- the classes are gone (the Specialist system is just awful), teamwork is at an all-time low in my opinion
- don't know about the soundtrack as it's not the whole game but the End of Round theme was bland to me (personal opinion). BF1 and BFV had stellar soundtrack. Hope there is something more epic in the final game
- lack of atmosphere (I didn't really feel it was Russia vs USA, especially with everyone looking the same 4 Specialists, I assume it's because the Beta was incomplete), the map was bland compared to Rotterdam in the BFV Beta. Waiting to see the other maps or if it improves with Breakthrough
- it's hard to say because Orbital hadn't much things to destroy but I'm a little concerned about destruction. Hopefully some maps have large destruction and terrain modification that change the flow of the map like Arras in BFV
- Orbital needs more tanks
- the UI is awful obviously

Wait and see but the Beta has left me disappointed (don't care much about the bugs, more because of the design decisions) and even more sad thay they gave up on BFV support after the Pacific update.

This would pretty much require the game to be started from scratch. The biggest issues with the game stem from the fundamental game design. UI, specialist system and map size are the 3 main issues that are going to not be scrapped or tweaked going forward.
They could technically rework the system to have classes like the older games and rework the map design by making a few small tweaks and changing flag placement. The UI can't be that hard to fix either. It will take months but I can be done.

Yeah. I was disappointed as well. I'm just crossing my fingers hoping they'll sort it out by release or soon after. They did say the beta was an older build... But... I guess we'll see.

This..........

hate me all you want folks.......

After playing this, the Vanguard beta isn't as bad.... at all. Yes... there some problems with Vanugard but... jeeze... the hate from that beta feels kinda like a overreaction now. This 2042 beta is another level of disappointment for me as a BF fanboy. It's literally changing the core of Battlefield to something else..

I liked it more than Vanguard but I liked this beta as much as Hardline, which wasn't much at all. I actually think I like Hardline more because it still retains some traditional aspects…lol

Honestly I felt like I had a very weird experience because it felt like my average matches as I went from alpha to beta were getting better and more teamwork oriented people as it went on, which is basically the exact opposite experience I've had with every other Battlefield up to this point.

Like I actually had this really set of fun matches where it got stupidly close between both teams and the only reason we even won in one of them was because the tornado happened to go through a chunk of the enemy team's vehicle assets.

Re: class identification, honestly I didn't feel like there was that much impact because my general pub Battlefield experience is to basically just assume the enemy team is hyper competent and will all switch instantly to the most needed class, so I've already had the built in general assumption of "if it's walking, shoot it repeatedly until it stops" 2042 effectively forces upon you for people who apparently got all the matches where large chunks of the enemy team actually stayed as a particular class.

...well I say that but it was specifically V's customization is actually what did that for me since large chunks of players liked using similar cosmetics for multiple classes.

It's a mess and would likely need at least 6 months more if not a year until release. The beta a month before release was like FO76 level of broken.

This kind of troll post should be a bannable offense. Like I put so much time and effort into my post and you just wanna be a driveby troll? I highly doubt you even read my post. Please don't post shit like this. It's lazy and doesn't add anything to the discussion.

I do not think your critiques are particularly unique or more insightful than any number of the other posts in the beta thread (where you also posted this originally) that are also critiquing the beta, rightfully so. There's really no reason to post it into your own thread besides the fact that you think your thoughts are too important for that thread or warrant their own thread, hence my dismissiveness of this thread.

That would be a huge undertaking. Especially when it comes to resources being used to content roll out. Probably take them at least a year to rework the game to address all the problems.

Speaking from someone who has almost zero history with the Battlefield franchise, I just found the gunplay and mechanics of the beta to not be that fun after a lengthy period of time. Again, this could just be my casualness speaking, but it's definitely nothing I'm gonna be picking up day one at full price.

This is where I am. I think they can make some decent changes before launch that aren't a complete revamp of the game like some are claiming it needs.

At least for me on PS5 this had the least amount of bugs and crashes of any BF beta I've played since BC2 and performance was mostly pretty good. In some ways it felt more polished than BF4 or V at launch.

despite all its issues, I had a lot of fun with it on PC. I hope the obvious issues and bugs get fixed/ironed out before release. Also hope they are not opposed to making large positive changes and additions going forward.
