The obligatory Force-is-strong-with-this-one reference is strong with this one.

After going on sale last night during the halftime of ESPN's Monday Night Football, Disney's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has turned out to be the second first day bestseller for mobile ticket retailer Atom Tickets, behind this year's Avengers: Endgame. That movie literally shut down many exhibitors' online ticket sites during their first day sales back in April. No other exhibitors or ticket services have reported yet on their first day sales for Skywalker, so we don't know yet how big of a box office phenomenon this Star Wars finale will be.

Atom reports that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sold 2.5 times more tickets in its first day of pre-sales than Star Wars: The Last Jediback in October 2017.

Last night, Atom reported that Rise of Skywalker set a first hour record for the retailer, selling 45% more tickets than Avengers: Endgame in its first hour.

As it stands, Atom Tickets' top five movies with the best 'first day' of pre-sales are as follows:

  1. Avengers: Endgame
  2. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  3. Aquaman
  4. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  5. Avengers: Infinity War

Atom has, to the best of my knowledge, increased in scale recently. I would not think of it as a guaranteed representative of the overall first-day sales. However, the tireless folks at Box Office Theory are presently estimating ~68% of Endgame's first-day presales for TROS, which remains a gargantuan number.

Remember, Star Wars is mightily front-loaded. But this is a good look.

It's Atom, though?

When tickets went on sale for Endgame, I couldn't get a seat for any Dolby showing for 5 days after release. There's still plenty of Friday seats for Skywalker.

Note, this is AMC River East 21 - one of Chicago's largest theaters.

Right — things presently appear very promising for The Rise of Skywalker, but not Endgame levels of promising. (Nor should anyone remotely expect as such.)

Fandango's 24-hour numbers are the real wait. Those will have a broader illustration. But Atom has picked up Cinemark and various independent chains, so it's still worth mentioning this stuff tonight if only to give folks in that 45% topic greater clarity.

Right now, the wizards at BOT are thinking 68% of Endgame's first 24 hours. I'm guessing what we'll end up seeing for TROS is either third or fourth place in the end. I don't think it will have a stronger first 24 than TFA and it definitely won't touch Endgame. But coming close to — or even slightly surpassing — Infinity War would still be a strong, strong play.

All this knee jerk reaction from the other thread
Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same.

Still plenty of tickets here left at my local theaters. There's 5 multiplex within 5mile radius for me and a drive in theater. TLJ and both avenger movies were sold out first weekend 😬. I think this make as much as TLJ. Word of mouth is gonna be key
