On one hand, Sicario is a masterwork of thriller cinema that uses context and consequence, rather than cheesy action setpieces. On the other hand, Arrival is a science fiction opus that illustrates its themes with its atmosphere, cinematography, and storytelling, paying off in a brilliant (albeit divisive) ending. Meanwhile, Blade Runner 2049 is simply one of – if not the – best sequel ever made, further expanding upon the themes of the original film, while still presenting its own stories and character arcs through tour de force storytelling. Ball-busting decision, but 2049 puts it over the top for me because Roger Deakins' cinematography is such an out-of-this-world experience.
