There it is.

"The size of the memory that is available in the XSS is the actual determining point for the entire console generation as gameplay features have to be fitted to the lowest spec."

Dev: Next-Gen Features Have to Be Fitted to XSS Memory; It Would Have Been Much Easier with XSX Only

Exor Studios' Paweł Lekki said that the Xbox Series S memory is the determining point for the gameplay features of next-gen consoles.

To those saying Series S would limit the generation according to the riftbraker dev, you were right all along.

I mentioned this in the Switch Pro thread, but I wonder if there's a shortened life expectancy for the Series S. I guess games will just see severe cuts

Devs should jsut remove these features from XSS, much like how Control won't have Ray-Tracing on XSS.

There's no need for them to sacrifice anything for the Series S.

I expected as much. There's no way that the S wouldn't hold back the generation.

However, I do kind of like that a side effect is that a number of PS5 and Series X games run at 60fps, so it's kind of worth the tradeoff in my opinion.

I'm sad I was right. The Series S is going to end up being a boat anchor on the entire generation.

That's easy for a next gen upgrade but how do you balance that when designing a whole new game with amazing next gen features. Do you cut out for the lower spec or start there)

While we were able to simply compile The Riftbreaker for the Xbox Series X and it "just works", the XSS requires additional optimization. Still, it doesn't look like it will require that much work to be running well at 1080p on the XSS. The best thing about the current architecture is that the CPU power on both Xbox models is practically the same. Scaling graphical effects is a lot easier than scaling gameplay.
From the point of view of a developer it would be much easier if there was a single XSX SKU, but given the circumstances I think that Microsoft has made good choices in how to create a much cheaper console, that can still run next-generation games.

Hmm.

You shouldn't do selective quoting.

This was a very common concern shared by many developers when the XSS specs were revealed, so it's no surprise it's coming up again so early in the generation.

With how much Series S is already struggling with next-gen games (1080p and lower resolutions often, sometimes cut graphical features), it really makes you wonder what the use was.
