After 18 years, Shenmue fans will be finally getting another entry in what's one of gaming's most iconic series of all time. Despite it being two of the most ambitious games ever made at the time they came out Shenmue is a niche series nowadays, so at worst you'd expect apathy towards this release from the general public.

However, that's not the case and instead all Shenmue discussions now end up becoming incredibly toxic. The game has been caught in so much crossfire of drama between the THQ Nordic stuff, the Epic vs Steam wars, a lack of transparency regarding refunds, etc. It almost felt like threads about drama involving the game got more attention than threads about the actual game, and that's really sad. Shenmue 3 ever happening is definitely something that nobody with a sane mind ever expected, and yet days from the game's release all you see is people swinging shit at each other with their drive-bys, hot takes and the likes of that. I guess it says something about the gaming community that such a game can cause so much vitrol, when it's one of the best comeback stories in gaming and one we likely won't be seeing again.

Maybe blame the devs and publisher for producing unneeded drama then, instead of the people that are the 'victim' of it?

this is true for like the last 10 big games on this forum dude. Pokemon and death stranding both just went through this, not to mention every other egs exclusive (except miraculously Control, which I dont remember seeing many shitheads bashing)

I agree, here I'm waiting for a way to play it proper and won't be able for a while but saddens me to see so much negativity.

It's because Shenmue has always been crazy divisive. I think it's one of the best games ever made, others vehemently disagree. I'm just gonna ignore the people trying to knock my hype down a peg because I have been waiting for this game for 13 years and I won't be deterred a week out from release

Do you legitimately think this is exclusive to Shenmue

it's not even the November release with the most toxicity surrounding it lol

this community could stand to be a little less negative at times.

I don't really partake in pre-release discussion about games that I'm extremely sure that I'll play, but there are completely legitimate criticisms around the choices made by developers and publishers around the game (which we know about and can talk about), AND the game isn't out yet (so there aren't many posters able to talk about their experiences playing it yet).

That's just era in general. More and more this forum seems to thrive on misery and negativity, and outside of a few communities I am moving more and more away from it.

Shenmue is a controversial series on here for people but seeing Death Stranding and Pokemon discussion, it's not just exclusive to Shenmue 3 either. Era really needs to calm down.

Its very sad. You'd think that everyone would be routing for shenmue 3 to succeed, as that would mean other publishers and companies may consider reviving other dormant ips.

I will say as others have said. I think it might be an Era thing. More and more threads are turning toxic and negative. Its a shame :(

Shenmue is a highly anticipated game and a game like that repeatedly doing weird shit is always gonna lead to discussions.
That's how it is.

A lot of people online just like to spend a lot of their time complaining really. You see the same ones in threads for games they were never getting spending a good chunk of the day going back and forth. Or they'll be in the review threads posting every negative thing they can find but completely change that energy in other threads.

Like someone else has said though, it isn't just with this game. You see it in the build-up to a lot of games, usually exclusives. Then the ones that talk the most crap usually never show up in the OTs. They just move on to the next game to be grumpy about.

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret:

This forum (and many others like it) would be dead if it wasn't for disagreements, arguments, controversy, drama, hot takes, etc.

When the value of a discussion is based on # of replies (because replies bump the thread, ping subscribers or people getting replied to, etc.), there is no other way but down into the mud.

I love Shenmue but you can't argue that the kickstarter lack of transparency and the epic store swerve was a good look. I hope Shenmue 3 is very good.

Still I don't like the occassional troll who say people pretend to like the series and post snarky gifs and not interested in proper discussion, fuck them.

If they handle it the same way it's been handled here, no thanks.

They can keep their garbage.

I mean maybe if the people behind the game wouldn't stop putting their foot in their mouth it wouldn't be so toxic? You're not exactly winning me over with your argument OP when you give valid reasons for people to be upset.

Personally I don't take much notice of the negativity. I'm here to talk about games I like and if other don't never mind.

Shopto sent my copy out so I got it today and 4hrs in I absolutely love it and any true Shenmue fan will in my eyes. Any non Shenmue fan would think it's absolutely garbage. That's fine.

I was kinda expecting OP to list a bunch of garbage people are talking about but instead it's shit like "Hey, THQ promoted a Nazi forum" and "They are fucking up refunds" and....those seem like worthwhile things to discuss?
Like, what is the problem here? If it was like "Urgh why are they making Shenmue, Shenmue is bad and garbage" or whatever I could understand OP but this? These are your examples for threads turning "toxic"? Because people bring up shady business stuff and THQ being a fucking garbage company that promoted a Nazi forum?

How many people are even aware that Deep Silver is somewhat related to THQ Nordic, not even counting the fact that apart from being owned by the same company they have basically nothing at all in common?

I think I'd be a lot more sympathetic to the OP if they didn't lump up nerd shit with the promotion of Neo-Nazi spaces as both just being drama.

Here? A lot, it's pretty much mentioned any time a Deep Silver game releases.

I've never played Shenmue so I didn't knew about this... I though everyone was happy.

I just sympathize with the people who have been waiting 18 years for a conclusion.

As a Half-Life fan, I understand.

Do you know what is sad?

People ignoring criticism, anti-consumer practices, and label people who are not okay with how things are going or how things were handled as haters, just because they like the game or studio.

So you don't think that people should be at least aware that THQ Nordic is a racist company that hosted a Q and A on a site that was behind the New Zealand shooting, promote child porn and is just full on racist thus encouraging them not to support the retail release?

But sure stick your head in the sand and ignore the important issues at hand.

I'm saying that the game got caught in the middle of that, not that people should ignore it, lol. As in, it wasn't something the dev team was to blame for, but it's still something that affects the game regardless.

Oh, I'm well aware of that - if a game is by THQ and/or Deep Silver, you can bet on someone sooner or later calling for a boycott. Which makes discussing such games here toxic indeed, that's true.

But outside that bubble? Virtually nobody cares and at the very least in the case of Deep Silver (who once again had nothing to do with the whole crappy situation), I think that's not wrong.

And still Deep Silver isn't the same as THQ Nordic, no matter how much you obviously want them to be.

Honestly hardly anyone even brings that up. Its mostly the EGS drama and even before that , a lot of people would just shit on the threads regardless. "This game was never good to begin with" ...etc.

Also I don't see how excessively shitting on Shenmue 3 will send THQ nordic a message , they parent company of the publisher of this game. I doubt theyd even care if this game succeeds or fails. Its a very small game to them and majority of it is YS Net and KS.

But regardless , most of the people don't even post about that. Just use it as a way to justify it.

Those commercial decisions deserve criticism but sometimes the threads attract drive by posts like a gif just saying "I don't get it" and who are just trying to be witty and don't give a shit about the game. People posting how they were dissappointed this "impossible game" for over a decade does not have a blockbuster budget and they were being very unreasonable, and sometimes we get the occasional tool saying people pretend to like the series. Some of the previews saying Yakuza is a replacement were being obnoxious too, when the games have some very different things to offer. The series has gained like a mythical status because of its trouble production and influence and everyone feels they need a say at one point, whether it's a valuable contribution or not. I think it can feel harsher for Shenmue because they want a happy ending.

This has been the case from way before EGS exclusivity was announced. I have just stopped caring now honestly. I will play the game and love it and that's it.

I just ignore all the people that just want to continue talking about all the negative stuff now, instead of moving on.

My Kickstarter copy has been shipped and I'm looking forward to playing the game. The demo was really good and the full game should be awesome. It might be janky compared to most modern games but it's Shenmue through and through and that is totally fine with me.

There are many games with various controversies and concerns surrounding them, this isn't unique to Shenmue, and we don't need a thread dedicated to metacommentary about a single game.
