https://www.eurogamer.net/amp/2019-01-03-uk-video-game-sales-now-80-percent-digital

The Entertainment Retailers Association said of the £3.86bn generated by the video game market in the UK in 2018, £3.09bn was from digital and £770m was from physical sales.

It should be noted this revenue includes online purchases of DLC content as well, which will skew the figures slightly, but provides a better perspective in a year where we had constant threads about big-name titles apparently selling less than expected in the UK based entirely on physical sales data.

except it's actually more like 25% of game sales are digital per the other thread.

You both messed up the title even worse than the other thread we have already had on the subject and failed to realise that we have already had a thread on this subject.

An odd headline, this is about money generated rather than sales. So it includes microtransactions.

I copied the Eurogamer headline verbatim, and apologies, I did a search for threads with "UK digital" in the title and didn't see another thread on this article.

This is the most important part, to not be misleaded in thinking now everyone buys games digitally

Indeed, even for FIFA, the split is trending towards more digital sales. This year, 25 per cent of FIFA 19 sales were digital. Last year, 20 per cent of FIFA 18 sales were digital. (FIFA 19 sales are down around 200,000 units on FIFA 18, incidentally, but if more sales were digital, publisher EA will have taken home more of a cut overall.)

So, it's still a huge 75% of people buying physical games, even if digital sold copies are increasing every year.

Crazy how big digital has got now. Kinda explains why the high street markets have died.

Well it makes a nice headline for those who want a digital-only future sooner than later. Perception is everything.

Request sent to lock or merge this thread. No idea why the other one didn't show up in my search.
