PS5 accounts for 72% of US next-gen pre-orders

29% of the respondents to a VGM study said they tried to pre-order a next-gen console but were not able to do so

A study from market research company VGM indicated that US players who have pre-ordered a next-gen console have predominantly gone for the disc edition of the PlayStation 5.

The study was conducted from September 23 to 25, 2020, using a sample of 511 US-based respondents, representative of the US general gaming population.

Among them, 15% said they managed to successfully pre-order a next generation console. Within this group, 72% went for the disc edition of the PS5, 30% went for the Xbox Series X, 10% for the PS5 digital edition and 8% for the Xbox Series S.

29% of the respondents said they attempted to pre-order a next-gen console but were not able to do so. Among them, 58% were trying to pre-purchase a PS5 disc edition, 40% an Xbox Series X, 21% a digital edition of the PS5 and 11% an Xbox Series S.

The sample was also divided into three categories: casual gamers, midcore, and hardcore. In the latter segment, 28% said they preordered a next-gen console, while 42% said they were unsuccessful in their attempt to do so.

Looking at the next-gen game offering, 52% of the respondents who have pre-ordered a PS5 (or who intend to buy one by the end of 2020) said that Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was the exclusive game that encouraged them to do so, followed by God of War: Ragnarok (42%) and Final Fantasy XVI (32%).

For the Xbox Series X and S, Halo Infinite was for 45% of the respondents who pre-ordered (or intend to do so by the end of the year) the exclusive game that motivated the purchase decision. It was followed by Fable at 26% and Forza Motorsport 8 with 24%.

Looking at non-exclusive titles, 45% of the respondents who have pre-ordered either of the upcoming consoles (or intend to do so by the end of 2020) said Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the title that motivated their decision, followed by Assassin's Creed: Valhalla at 31%.

Aren't both next gen systems sold out? Doesn't this just indicate the proportion of launch quantities available?

From in shambles. Time to go and make Lost Kingdoms 3 like we really deserve.

Those percents add up to 120 percent....?

Edit: Or these are people that are ordering multiple consoles in some cases I guess?

So 15% of 511 were able to preorder and out of those, 72% chose PS5 disc. That's like 50 people lol

Is that even representative?

511 respondents and only 15% of them preordered a console, I wouldn't pay too much attention to these stats tbh

This. With both consoles being sold out currently, this only means that Sony made more than twice as many consoles available for pre-order in the US as Microsoft did.

Like, while i can certainly see actual difference in demand / thirst being close to these figures, this is simply not a conclusion we have any underlying facts for yet.

I saw the 72% number for PS5 and thought it was about Europe. But holy shit, US?

Yep and the 72% number is misleading, because that's the number of 15% which could get a console. And as you said the percentage isn't 100% when you add up 72% disk PS5, 30% Xbox Series X and so on.

511 responses is not a big sample now, is it

oef, in the only country (besides perhaps the UK) where the xbox had a shot. This is gonna be an interesting generation. As it's also when streaming services mature.

I have no doubts if they sampled a large subsection of people you'd more than likely get similar results but this made me chuckle lol...
The sample can still be representative with 511 people, just surprised at the 15% number. Seems really low.

Ignoring the PS5 v Xbox, I wonder if those numbers are at all representative of people who tried to preorder vs. those that were successful.

The breakdown with respect to games is Basically a slap in the faces of everyone who said cross gen games won't encourage launch purchases. Miles and Halo Infinite - both crossgen - are still the main draws for both next gen consoles.

months spent on Era arguing about this and the market has spoken that this argument was largely inconsequential.

Still weird that FFXVI that's a long way off generates much more interest than Demons Souls.

Sounds like MS really should have made more Series X's available, hopefully the launch restock will be substantial.

15 percent of the 511 pre ordered, so the sample size is 76 people. Not sure how meanignful this study really is. Better metrics also suggest that Sony had more systems available for pre order.

Higher than I thought in terms of splits but there is a reason PS5 metrics in terms of social media are through the roof.

Yeah this is such a small sample lol.

Also even if these numbers are true it would simply indicate how many consoles each company made available for pre-order, since the systems are sold out everywhere.

So much for Gamepass value. Sales ratio will probably be even more skewed towards Sony than last gen.

I am surprised God of War was such a big factor, at least in comparison to say Horizon, which we saw much more footage of and was also a huge hit.

It absolutely is not. With a 5% margin of error you could probably sample under 400 and get an accurate number.

This happens every thread, so here you go: 511 is not enormous but it's plenty to get a decent picture statistically speaking, if it's representative. The problem is usually methodological - e.g. that samples are not usually representative unless they've taken extreme care to avoid sampling problems.

Simply blowing up the sample to 50,000 people wouldn't necessarily get you a more accurate picture unless the exact same care was taken to make sure it was a good sample to begin with.

I mean what were we expecting? People to run and buy an Xbox because MS acquired studios?

The truth is only one of them has a new Spider-Man coming out this fall. And it's not a MS console.
