The NES released in 1983 in Japan and 1985 in the US that puts it at 15-18 years old on the 360's release.

The 360 released in 2001 which is currently 19 years ago.

I have a hard time considering the 360 retro but...? By all reasonable time measures it should probably be considered retro.

Edit: Requested a thread lock

Double Edit: Actually 2005 so it would have been 20-22 years old and the 360 is currently 15. In other news the calculation does make it slightly older than the US SNES was at launch.

360 was 2005 though. The original Xbox was the 2001 one.

I suppose we could shift the conversation to if we consider Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube retro? I don't think we're far off.

Was about to get angry at how off your premise was based on the facts... but yeah, beaten. I would consider the OG Xbox retro now, 360 needs to wait another few years.

To me, retro isn't simply something old. 360 games are way closer to current gen than NES design and aesthetics-wise. So no, I wouldn't consider it retro. Sixth gen barely is starting to qualify as retro imo.

With that said, It feels a little odd that I've lived about as long in a post-Xbox 360 world as I have in a pre-360 world.

Gamecube and PS2 are super retro, but the differences in technology not being as stark mean that it will be a few more years before Xbox 360 really feels retro.

Here I am more amazed to find out there was only 4 years between OG Xbox and 360. I didn't realize it's lifespan was that short.

Ignoring the mistake on the dates (which I don't think many here will do), the point stands that the 360 to now is about the same time as NES was to 360, and while we considered NES retro in 05, I don't think many consider 360 games retro now. I think the word people tend to use is "dated", while the same things we considered retro in 05 is what is still called retro today.

I think part of the reason for this is the type of differences in games. We were playing completely different kinds of games in 05 compared to NES and they looked like completely different mediums. Whereas nowadays we are playing the same kinds of games, just bigger and better, and they look like the same kind of thing, just higher fidelity. So it's harder to see them as "retro" when we aren't as far away from them as we were from the NES.

If you want to really feel confused by timelines, a reminder that all Harry Potter films were released on UMD
