Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has warned of "huge consequences" of President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan.
Mrs Clinton told CNN there was a risk the Taliban - the Islamist group ousted in 2001 by the US-led invasion - could retake control.
The US aims to complete the withdrawal by 11 September.
However, the Taliban have been carrying out more attacks.
"This is what we call a wicked problem," Mrs Clinton told CNN. "There are consequences both foreseen and unintended of staying and of leaving," she said.
Mrs Clinton, like Mr Biden a Democrat, was a strong supporter of the US intervention in Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Mr Biden wants to complete the withdrawal by the 20th anniversary of the attacks later this year.
At least 2,500 US troops are currently deployed as part of the 9,600-strong Nato Afghan mission.

Also interesting is this graph from CNN of US Troop levels which have steadily come down since the Obama Administration

Edit: Can mods please place "BBC:" at beginning of thread title? That's the headline from BBC News.

Edit #2:

She said the potential collapse of the Afghan government and a possible takeover by the Taliban could result in a new civil war.
Mrs Clinton said it was also important to protect the "many thousands of Afghans" who had worked with the US and Nato during the conflict, and said a large visa programme should be set up to provide for any refugees.

She's quite right. The problem is withdrawal had to happen at some point. Best we can do is open the doors for any Afghanis who want to leave to do so and come here.

She's right, but what we've seen is that no matter how long we stay, once we pull out they're going to resurface. They just have too much support in the region.

I know Era is anti-Hillary but I agree.

Saudi's might blow up something else again in the usa to get us to get rid of some of their enemies again.

The neoconservative wing of the Democratic Party had their say for long enough.

Get your grubby mouth out of the one unmitigated triumph of the Biden admin.

How misogynistic of ERA telling Hillary to shut up.

Instead of responding with why she's wrong, you go right to "shut up".

She's right, but you can't stay there forever. Never should have been there in the 1st place is the only right answer and that ship sailed 2 decades ago.

The US staying will not accomplish anything so nah, we should withdraw. We clearly haven't been a net positive in the region.

Why phrase the title that way when the quote is "There are consequences both foreseen and unintended of staying and of leaving"

Yes, but it doesn't matter. Afghanistan has been and will always be a sunk cost.

The more excuses we use for staying there, the more senseless death, violence, and military SPENDING we'll be involved with. At a point you just have to make the sacrifice.

Our mission in Afghanistan was over many years ago. We have zero attainable goals there. Same for Iraq. Just because these places might not be stable without us doesn't mean they'll reach stability with us. It's time to move on.

The options are 1.) stay there forever, and 2.) leave, and accept that the Taliban will retake the country. 2.) is the right choice, because 1.) is insane and there is no 3.)
Exactly. We'll be there forever if we don't pull out. There's no point. And, the vast majority of American support leaving.

Anyone entering the military right now has never known a life where we weren't at war in the middle east. It's insane.

She's right. But no matter when they leave there'll be consequences. So, Joe is going to bite the billet on this one.

That's a big nothing statement.

Yes, it's true. Yes, we should still leave.

News media sucks. They're just trying to get a soundbyte from a controversial figure since Biden isn't giving them anything. Then in a little while they'll complain about dem infighting again, even though they're poking it cause they want more news.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. There is no good outcome, but the general public have been weary of this for years now. They want out and us staying there is not really going to change the outcome there.

They know their audience. Doesn't take much with Hillarys name.

I do enjoy people chiming in with the "Shut up!" hot take though, only to then go and type out a statement that completely agrees with what she actually said.

The Pool
Hillary Clinton could have literally disappeared and never said anything ever again after the 2016 election and it would have done more to "preserve her legacy" than everything she has said and done since then.

Making the sacrifice is easy if you don't suffer the consequences though. The senseless death and violence might go down a bit while the troops are leaving so that the Taliban doesn't give a reason to stay, but after that, it will go way further. The only difference is that the US will spend less as you indicate. The only thing Taliban will do is prevent Al Qaeda from coming back.

yes but she is not introducing any new information here. we know that pulling out of Afghanistan is not 100% rainbows and sunshine. The only new thing is that there is now actual movement towards leaving
Sure, but why is that a reason for people to respond with such vitriol?

Especially since she was asked the question and simply answered it. People on this site really are mean at heart.

1. Hillary Clinton looks to Henry Kissinger as not just informing her foreign policy perspective but also as a friend.

2. Hillary Clinton has been on the wrong side of just about every single foreign policy decision that the US has made during her time on the national stage.

Hillary Clinton should be quiet and go away, we don't need her commenting on the Afghan troop withdraw.
