I have a hard time imagining Sony with as much cash as Microsoft, but if they did, do you think they would have bought Activision? In the past, Sony has purchased studios and nourished them, but I'm sure that's the only method they could employ because they can't just go out and buy whole publishers.

No, as it does not fit with their past history of acquisitions nor would it dovetail as nicely with their substantially different business model.

It also isn't worth asking anyway, since if they had that kind of money in the bank basically everything about how they conduct business would be different anyway

If Sony had a different market cap than they do now, they wouldn't be the Sony you think you know.

a more efficient version of this question is "do you believe Sony leadership believes in aggressive market consolidation?"

If they also had something like Gamepass in the works, of course they would. MS buying AB is less about the console wars, and more about growing Gamepass as a service. And a natural step in the process of making Gamepass dominant is ensuring you have enough studios churning out quality content for customers to be satisfied.
