And it was pretty funny seeing and hearing the reactions to people at the end of their shifts, like that extra 90 minute stretch was the most grueling experience of their lives. "God, I am SO GLAD to be going home. I'm EXHAUSTED. That was complete HELL." Like... I routinely put in 10 and 11 hour days every week and even 12 hour days on occasion and have at all the other jobs I've ever held in retail and food service. It's not a big deal, lol, and I like getting the extra pay.

That said, my socialist and anti-capitalist leanings do, of course, make me realize the sad state of affairs in which this kind of live-to-work and work-to-live mentality is normalized in my brain. I wish it didn't have to be this way, and maybe someday it won't need to be -- well, in other places in the world, but in the US? Haaaa.

Just because it isn't a big deal to you doesn't mean others aren't exhausted at the end of the day.

Yes it is.

It's more work in a row than the human body is capable of doing properly. The fact that you're used to doing it does not invalidate the pain of those who aren't. You shouldn't look down at or laugh at them. They have every right to be exhausted. Your body and mind are likely suffering from more consistent and subtle effects of doing it regularly. They're healthier for being exhausted after it because it means their bodies are telling them to STOP.

Everyone's journey and fatigue levels are different.
This post is like a professional athlete laughing at someone sweating in a gym.

Just there way to vent, but at same time who knows what their personal life is like. An extra 90 minutes can do alot.

If I'm scheduled for an 8 hour shift and somebody tells me that I'll need to work another 90 minutes, it's a big deal.

- Has self-ascribed anti-capitalist leanings
- Chides workers for complaining about unnecessary overtime because they regularly do 10-12 hour shifts like that's cool.

Christ you reminded how my manager would routinely ask me to stay an extra two or 3 hours or try to get me to come in on my days off when I was working part time in retail. Fuck that noise

Were the workers told in advance they'd be working a longer shift? Finding out you have to stay late at work near the end of your shift is a terrible feeling.

Your coworkers aren't slackers like you so of course they're exhausted after 8 and a half because they were actually working hard.

Sorry but you are stupid if you do that routinely.
Your bosses love you I guess though.

In Germany it is 8 hours per day. 10 hours max. And that is per law.
And 11 hours minimum between two shifts.

Yeah, the money is nice. But especially in retail and food with its bad work environment, it just makes it bad for everyone.

It's just about what you're used to.

A 10-hour shift isn't a big deal if you're used to working 10s. But to someone who works 6-8, a 10-12 hour shift is an eternity and your body will kill you for doing it.

Regardless, I don't think ANYONE should regularly work more than 8. It's a waste of life tbh. There's even a fair bit of science saying 8 is too much/hurts productivity in workers.

Being forced to work unreasonable hours, just to still be poor at the end of the day is pretty fucking miserable, yeah. Just because you're willing to do it without complaining doesn't mean your coworkers should shut up and happily accept their own exploitation.

I usually work a minimum of 11 hrs/day on weekdays, sometimes I go up to 14-15 at least once or twice a week. And I'm thinking of getting a double shift weekend job. I fucking sucks, but once I started working like that I was able to pay off all my debt, build up 10k+ in savings, and start investing. And I've only been doing that for like a year, big turn around from trying to find a loan to consolidate literally last year. I'm working towards a downpayment for a house. It was literally the only way for me to do it, since I don't really depend on financial support from family. Gonna do another year of hard grinding until I get that house and then I'll relax.
It's just about what you're used to.

Its a give and take. Like right now I don't have to check my balance anymore. If I want a ps5, I'm like cool swipe the debit without even thinking about it. All bills set to auto-pay, and credit is on point. But now when I have time off I just sleep or go to the gym(since I normally can't because of time constraints). No time to drink, party, or game so no point in wasting money on that stuff. Which leads to even more money being saved up. Back when I did take it easy all I did was worry about money, my credit score, etc. Its a nice feeling just seeing your savings go up by the thousands every month, when before it would take me years to get a couple thousand saved up. That said I know theres no way in hell living like that is sustainable, but I don't think its bad as long as you have a goal in site. In a way wallowing in debt is also a waste of time, and its really hard to get out of it unless you're willing to do the grind.

edit-by grind I don't mean retail though, that shit is soul crushing and my second job is manual labor(do it for benefits). Lots of jobs out there pay way more and require less from you.

Retail is a miserable experience (based on past experience, watching, and reading internet horror stories), so I can't say I blame your coworkers for being exhausted by the end of a long day.

If this is fucking retail then you are stupid for being proud of putting all this extra time and energy into the job, let alone bragging about how others "can't handle" it.

10 hours is a long time. I did a lot of that when I was younger but only because I needed the money, it was never particularly easy. Nowadays there's no way I could do it. Too many other obligations to turn myself into a zombie just to zone some shelves or something.

I really enjoy my 3 12-hour shifts and getting paid for 40 hours. Work less hours and get 4 days off in a row.

10 hours was my basic shift pattern 6 days a week back in the day and it just leaves you a husk every single day, it should never be required, especially in this day and age.

Glad you are so healthy and strong, not all of us are due to medical conditions. I am self employed but at the end of an 8 hour day at the retail business I am part of and sell in I am exhausted. I am self employed because working 40 hours+ would just not be possible due to medical reasons anymore. If you can work 10+ hours with no issue be happy and consider yourself very fortunate.

Also, you have no idea what your coworkers did before coming to work. Maybe they take care of a child or elderly parent, maybe they work another job as well or attend school. I use to hate thinking I am working 8 hours and then have to work 10+.

I do like the extra pay as well, but i also like my physical and mental health.

10-12 days for weeks is a big fucking no lmao

OP specifically mentions the paradoxical mindset that they have, because they have been forced by the US system to work such long shifts and now they can't stop feeling as if other people are used to having it easy. You can have socialist leanings and be damaged by capitalism and have that mindset seep into you, even though you don't want to.

That seems to be kind of the point of the OP even?

I feel you. There was a point in my life where I didn't mind putting in extra hours and I still try to keep a willingness to grind.

But times change and people have lives. Let's say I'm scheduled for an 8 hour shift. If I have plans afterwards now I'm supposed to what? Fuck my life because management wants more sweat from a stone? I have a family. I got shit to do. I don't mind them asking. But with asking comes the need to respect if someone declines and not hold it against them.

Retail management holds shit like that against employees and it's gross.

Our business is open from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, 5 days a week. Everyone there works those hours everyday.

But it's a small supply warehouse business with 7-8 employees typically.

Learn to say NO. If they sprung that on me last minute, I'd tell them I have an appointment so I can't stay late. In fact, I have to leave early to make the appointment. Bye!

Long hours can be so grueling on a regular basis, especially 6 day work weeks. 1 day off is not enough time to recharge the batteries. Four 10hr days, 3 days off is ideal for balance.

Get out of retail ASAP! There are tons of higher paying jobs out there... angle for one. Work smarter not harder.

I can't see myself working more than 40 hours a week on average. On the times when I've had to stay late (for surprise issues, fairly rarely) I keep track of my time and reduce my hours the following week to make up for it. But I feel for those that don't have that option or are forced to work longer hours than they want to.

Sorry but you are stupid if you do that routinely.
Your bosses love you I guess though.

As long as you are getting paid properly for it, I don't see what makes it "stupid."

When they release the list of highest paid public employees in my city, bus drivers are routinely at the top of the list, because of overtime pay. They make more than the mayor or chief of police or head of the transportation department they work for. You actually see complaints from younger drivers that the more senior ones are hogging the overtime opportunities because of union rules.

The point of the OP seems to be to make fun of his coworkers while using their socialist beliefs to let them off the hook.

Any anti-capitalist worth their salt would've just never made the thread because the complaints wouldn't have bothered them enough to expend the effort to throw their coworkers under the bus to a bunch of internet strangers in the first place.
