New COVID-19 Variant Alert: Everything We Know About the IHU Variant—Suspected to be More Infectious than Omicron | Weather.com

The IHU variant has emerged from a lineage named B.1.640.2 and possesses 46 mutations and 37 deletions in it. - Articles from The Weather Channel | weather.com

The IHU variant was found by researchers at the IHU Mediterranee Infection Institute, which is how it got its temporary name. These researchers believe that its mutations make it more infectious and vaccine-resistant than Omicron.

Tests show the strain carries the N501Y mutation — first seen on the Alpha variant — that experts believe can make it more transmissible. It also has the E484K mutation, which could make it more resistant to vaccines.

As for whether this variant is worse than Omicron and other variants of concern, epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding took to Twitter to address the issue. He stressed that while new variants keep emerging, they might not necessarily be more dangerous.

Presently, the IHU is yet to be detected in other countries or labelled a variant under investigation by the World Health Organisation. Meanwhile, research on it is set to continue, which will help us understand this variant better.

There are a bunch of variants that aren't noted for being of particular concern, so I'd imagine we'd get more information later if one is. You don't hear a lot of people talking about Epsilon but it's out there.

I wonder how many variants there've been that went unnoticed by the public at large because they fizzled into nothing. Not saying that it will happen here, but I can kind of understand the lack of rush here. It's hard enough to keep people focused on Delta and Omicron, throwing out another thing to worry about before it's confirmed to be something to worry about won't help things.

It seems we'll have more and more variants, but maybe that's not unusual with viruses.
Isn't Flu like this too? I mean each year we see new types of it and each year we should use a new vaccine which is different from last year.
We just can hope for new Covid 19 variants to be less dangerous than previous ones...

I talked with my Mom about this in that it'll probably be like Lambda where it'll be in the headlines for a couple weeks before fizzling out of public memory. According to this Bloomberg article, it was discovered around the same time as Omicron (November) and, while certainly infectious, hasn't spread much beyond France. (If at all.)

Certainly keep an eye on it, but don't panic. Omicron's the main concern.

That's the thing about virology, there are ALWAYS going to be tons of variants of pretty much every common sickness we have. It's why we have yearly flu shots. It's not worth fretting over, just take the WHO and the CDC's advice when it comes to treatment and prevention.
