SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- North Korea fired an unidentified short-range missile in the direction of the East Sea on Saturday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The North "fired a missile from its east coast town of Wonsan in the eastern direction at 9:06 a.m. today," the JCS said in a release.

South Korean and U.S. authorities "are analyzing details of the missile," it added.

Can the UN just solve the humanitarian crisis in North Korea already? It's barbaric what's happening there.

The U.S. and NK seem interested in diplomacy, but only for political reasons. Not solutions. Nothing short of Kim maintaining absolute power with no U.S. presence in the region or the U.S. claiming North Korea as a satellite country will make either side happy.

There's apparently also the beginnings of a huge food shortage.

Millions of North Koreans are being forced to rely on meagre rations after the nation's worst harvest in a decade.

The country is 1.36m tonnes of food short following a series of weather disasters, compounded by longstanding international sanctions.

A UN assessment found North Koreans had been surviving on just 300g (10.5 oz) of food a day so far this year.
