Yup.
They knew what they were doing, Bennet wasn't running a rogue operation. This was a sacrificial lamb.
The primary mandate at NYT should be to never give ink to anyone who is a provable, known bigot. Tom Cotton didn't hide his bullshit so I'm not sure how anyone thought it was a good idea to even accept mail from him let alone publish him unless you agreed with his ideas or didn't give a fuck about what the paper promotes which are equally fucked.
Imagine fucking up that big of a job during a time like this. Well, I can imagine this is a step in the right direction.
Does the NYT provide a detailed account of their editorial standards somewhere? I didn't see such a page in a cursory scan of their website.
