However, completely folding the device will lead to breakage," the executive said.

As such, Samsung is testing methods that will keep the sides slightly lifted when folded.

The executive said the prototype they were shown does leave a crease mark when being folded but noted that the issue will be fixed in the final consumer version.

Samsung publicly demonstrated its Infinity Flex Display for the first time last November although it did so under the guise of very dim lights and an external chassis to hide the elements of the design.

Amazing tbh

??? Is this not the most obvious thing ever? "thing breaks when bent past the point it's supposed to go..."

I mean, it's a prototype and not a final product sold to consumers.

if it can't be folded all the way its a poor gimmick
samsung should go all the way and if it can't be done, shouldn't bother producing it

Yup, that's how folding works all right.

Um your laptop shouldn't break just because you closed it all the way

So does my finger when you bend it beyond its limitations.

Who keeps letting you make threads. he asked, sarcastically.

OT: Samsung should just stick to TVs. Or wait till Apple makes a fold-able phone for them to copy.

Did you not read the part you quoted in your OP saying "but noted that the issue will be fixed in the final consumer version"?
Maybe you should re-read because that line refers to the fact that it leaves a crease. About the folding breakage, it says they are finding ways to stop it from completely being folded closed and have not found the solution yet.

Mt. Whatever
Can't one of these big tech giants just make a smart-flip-phone?

Oh right. They do but only limit them to China and Korea. -_-

A complete gimmick which itself seems to have little practical application, but I'm sure pushing this tech will lead to practical applications and offshoots as it matures, so whatever full steam ahead

Who exactly asked for foldable phones to begin with?

Who exactly asked for foldable phones to begin with?
The uses it can have are plenty. Imagine having a cellphone that can convert into a tablet.
That's pretty nifty.

Anyway, it's a prototype and they are ironing these kind of problems. If this keeps happening on releasw, then laugh all you want.

Can people not decide what they want with a phone holy crap.
They need to go smaller!
Even smaller!
Wait, a bit bigger!
I guess a clamshell design would stop you pressing buttons in your pocket?
These are too thick: go thinner!
Who wants a QWERTY keyboard, eh guys?
Flip phones are so 2006. Touchscreen, baby!
Smaller again!
Scratch that, go all the way to 6", and paper thin!
Wait, they're too big, what if we could fold them to go smaller and thicker?
