One of the stranger announcements out of the latest Nintendo Indie Showcase was an all new Getsu Fuma Den game. Unlike all the old IP that Sega is farming out to small developers (Streets of Rage, Panzer Dragoon, House of the Dead), Konami themselves are footing the bill.

I know we joke about Konami no longer making games outside of Pro Evolution Soccer, but has their status fallen so low that they're comparable to studios with only 5 people? Especially since they still make billions of yen off their fitness and pachinko machines.

Just seems weird.

Its not that serious - or do people consider MS a indie because Ori was shown during a Indie Showcase ?
The game and the kind of marketing its gonna get probably just fit the theme of a Indie Showcase more than a regular Direct.

It's by GuruGuru, it said the developer's name below Konami's.

And it already looks better than the most recent Contra game.

This sort of thing with big publishers doing indie content has been done loads of times.
Does it meet the definition of "indie"? no, not at all, but it's the exact same in the movie business such as with Fox Searchlight or in music with 4AD.

The term has effectively morphed into meaning low budget and has done for a long time now.
