User Banned (Permanent): Reactionary thread based on inflammatory and unsourced material; prior bans related to misogyny including a severe ban for sexist concern trolling.
The Netflix film that had a controversial marketing campaign (previous thread here: Netflix releasing Cuties, based on the story of a refugee who is torn between traditional values and internet culture; has very questionable marketing) is finally out and has caused #CancelNetflix and #BoycottNetflix to trend on Twitter. It seems like the content of the film is actually pretty sexualized (according to this parents guide website warning) and the clips online. (EDIT: sorry it was a user generated IMDB post)

There's some clips floating around on Twitter under those 2 hashtags, but I honestly don't feel comfortable sharing them here. Kinda wish I hadn't seen them myself tbh.

...I thought y'all were saying it was just the marketing that was fucked. I believed y'all for a second.

Just because the message is supposed to be that sexualization of minors is bad doesn't mean it's okay to show sexualization of minors. What the FUCK are those descriptions???

I don't understand why the parents of the kids would agree to some of those scenes, no Netflix?

Idk, maybe everything/anything goes in the world of film and art but it seems weird to me.

Shame that I can only give it a Thumbs Down and not a 1 Star. I don't want that shit anywhere near the algorithm.

There will not be a short supply of reactionary hot takes based on the title and some of the US marketing materials.

Description #2 could have probably held back on that prose and still got the point across.

Netflix was insane not to see this would cause a big issue here.

Uhhh... I literally just added this to my Netflix list 2 minutes ago because I remembered the backlash and deciding that I'd give it a chance after reading the story about the director (it was the director, right?) and form my opinion after watching the film. If those kinds of scenes are there though... I don't know if I want to watch it after all...

I just saw the dancing clip on Twitter for a few seconds and my only thought is WTF. I mean people came into that other thread "Hur dur it's a coming of age movie!" and now this. Like holy shit there is no defending it.

I would also like to add that, as a Muslim, the "poor brown Muslim girl who is oppressed by her parents (who hit her btw) is liberated by her white friend(s)" is a well worn-out Orientalist trope and is offensive in and of itself.

Fuck this movie and all the people that were so smugly defending it.

people said the trailer made it look better/less exploitative

and now it seems the movie itself has once again flip-flopped (though again im not checking it out myself)

I think Netflix should have blame of course for paying for it but also attention needs to be given to French Filmmaking as they push the boundaries on what they film. It's been like that for years, in French films you never know what to expect.

Perhaps it's just the different culture but thats something.

Come on, Era. We did this knee-jerking in the other thread. Can we please remember that context matters and that making sweeping declarations about a work of art you haven't seen do no one any favors? This film is condemning the exact kind of content that people are accusing it of being, without having seen it.

That's kinda... gross. Maybe there was a heartfelt story to tell but these scenes aren't needed for that. The thought of the audition process makes me a little sick tbh.

EDIT: I have skimmed the movie pretty thoroughly and the post from imdb with the salacious details was fake news. There might be some scenes that are maybe a little gratuitous but they are very brief and don't feel exploitative. My opinion on it has completely changed. and I think it's very safe to watch.

Imagine putting "This is lawfully defined as pedophilia" in the disclaimer and STILL putting it on there.

Yeah, French films have always, in my experience, a weird thing with little girls. The age of consent in France is 15, btw.

this is total garbage but it's probably going to be a massive hit regardless, and we're gonna have to deal with people rationalizing their fandom of it

Eh, I don't know.

It got overwhelmingly positive reviews and none of the negative ones listed on Rotten Tomaties seem to be negative because they think this is pedophilia porn. I'm not gonna judge a movie's merit or intent by reading a Parental Guide or outraged soccer moms on Twitter.

I feel like they should have marketed it better then to avoid this

Maybe take a look at how Muslims feel about this representation.

Based on clips in a Twitter thread I saw, there are focused ass shots while a bunch of children twerk. There's no way this ever would have been acceptable. Netflix needs to remove this shit.

When arthouse films go too far. I get from the interviews what the director was trying to do but I think this is a bit much based on this.
