So I was real hesitant to start this thread for a number of reasons.

First, Troy Baker has a ridiculous amount of fans here on ERA, and I'm not particularly in the mood to be dogpiled on by fans of Joel/Kanji/Joker/Whoever the fuck you like that believe that the person who portrays the character they like is not capable of wrongdoing.

Second, this is kind of a grey area for some people? Crowdfunding rewards were partially sent out, so if you ordered something digital, you likely got it. If you ordered something physical, well go fuck yourself with something sharp and rusty.

Third, I'm not really here for drive-bys or to be "Well Actually"-ed to death. (i.e. "Crowdfunding LOL" or "Well, actually, you should've filed a chargeback...") Yes, fuck me for believing an extremely well-known artist will fulfill their promises.

And lastly, for any wannabe backseat mods who are hovering over the report button: This thread is in Gaming, not because of the content of the thread (which is primarily music) but because the person the thread is about is primarily known as a video game voice actor (and not the musician he fancies himself to be).

With all of that out of the way (I'm tired), let's start:

In 2017, Troy Baker partnered with a site called pledgemusic.com (don't even bother, they are very much dead now) to start crowdfunding for a new album. More here:

ABOUT — WINDOW TO THE ABBEY

The album had a release date of June 14, 2017. Like all crowdfunding, various tiers were available. For $35.00 USD, you would receive digital copies of two albums, an autographed physical CD, and a second CD. For those details, since PledgeMusic is still deader than dead, we use the Wayback Machine:

web.archive.org

Troy Baker: Window To The Abbey

Six friends seeking to tell a story with music. Be a part of the experience. Be a part of the story.

The crowdfunding goal was reached on April 17, 2017. Then the delays started. June 2017 became October 2017. October 2017 became 2018. 2018 became 2019. And in May 2019, PledgeMusic unceremoniously died. If you'd like to go down that rabbit hole (why? why would you?) there's this:

www.digitalmusicnews.com

The Rise and Fall of PledgeMusic — How Everything Went Horribly Wrong

PledgeMusic as a crowdfunding platform was a massive success when it was founded in 2009. But soonafter, things started to go horribly wrong for artists.

Now it's crowdfunding. You aren't guaranteed anything with crowdfunding, but the plot thickens. You see, these rewards Troy Baker (or Window to the Abbey, whatever the fuck) promised pledgers were produced. And sold. By Troy Baker, at various Cons.

Now, there are no Kotaku articles about this, or any media coverage that I could find for that matter, and why would there be? Who the hell has ever heard of PledgeMusic? So the sources are basically my experience, and various social media posts. So here's someone's experience, and their claim that Troy had signed and sold these rewards (that again, were not sent out) at Cons:

There's also a Reddit thread that discusses some of this, but yeah, not linking to Reddit. Since PledgeMusic is dead, so is the comment section, which was filled with pledgers who never received anything from Mr. Relater.

The very last e-mail about this I received (I only ever received four), was on August 8, 2018. The text of the e-mail:

It's coming together + bonus content. Hello Friends! First of all, we want to say thank you all so much for your continued patience with this project! I know it's been a long time coming! We have the CDs in hand and the vinyls are on their way to us! The handwritten lyrics and coffee table book are the remaining things that we're working on...

Yeah, none of those CDs were sent. The ones they had in hand. But they were sold. At Cons.

We're three months away from the 5-year anniversary of me giving Troy Baker $35.00 so I could (Oh God, I'm gonna vom) #BeAPartOfTheStory:

It's thirty-five bucks, whatever I'll survive. Just wanted to let you all know, in case you didn't already, that Troy Baker is kind of a pretentious asshole.

He actually produced the rewards and kept them to be sold to others after? Wow, that's a real shit thing to do.

That first website you linked is so full of pretentious bullshit.
"We broke the songs down, put them back together, then broke them down again."
Who speaks like this?

I've actually heard of PledgeMusic because K.Flay self funded an album after dropping off her major label deal in 2014.

Though that actually came out and I got the rewards that were promised.

After I got over my high of being a fan of him, I really couldn't stand him at all. He just seems so full of himself and hasn't done anything really great outside of the last of us.

also, I listened to one of his albums… he's not good.

The story of PledgeMusic is full of shady shit like this, which is a real shame - I know a couple of artists whos career was literally saved by Pledge, right before the leeches took over and ruined it like they do with everything.

I mean, there's a reason Nolan North parted ways with him doing Retro Replay.

Troy is FULL of himself. But then again most actors are so 🤷‍♀️.

I think it's completely fair to say Troy Baker is a ginormous douchebag grifter

but he's also really talented voice actor

I mean this in the sense that we can all be cognizant of his douchery but also recognize he's likely going to keep working in the industry at a high level and doing good work at that, so this is one of those things where separating the art from the artist is very much necessary, and I'm not entirely sure what you want us to do with this info.

I bought an album on PledgeMusic back in the day from a band I liked. That worked out, though.

The fact that this guy had the stuff manufactured, signed them, then sold them at cons instead of shipping them to pledgers is pretty fucked up. Fuck this guy.

Very disappointing. At least the others in the overused voice actor trio, Laura Bailey and Nolan North don't seem like bad eggs.

I'm sorry what happened to you and everyone else that pledged. I hope whatever amount of money he ran off with was worth damaging his reputation.

If he still made stuff and sold it elsewhere, that's some shit. What an asshole.

The way he speaks/talks, I don't know. I don't wanna assume but I don't trust this guy somehow.
Yeah, the way he talks about things has a real snake oil salesman / kind of a preacher vibe. I'm a big fan of PWL but I wouldn't miss him if he left.

Hard disagree. Plenty of other great voice actors who aren't pretentious grifter assholes, and it's hard to separate art from the artist when to partake of their art you have to financially support their bullshit or at the very least contribute indirectly to their popularity.

While far less obscene in scope and impact, it's like saying 'separate the art from artist with respect to JK Rowling and Harry Potter' or 'separate Koichi Sugiyama's music from his awful xenophobia and homophobia and his fucked up lobbying',

Like if you want to go ahead and continue to support Troy Baker because you value his performances over the fact that he seems to be a bit shit of a person be my guest but don't throw up some normative statement about how people should be able to separate the art from the artist. That's a super personal choice and to assume that everyone can or has the luxury of doing so is frankly parochial.

Like what do you think OP is providing this info for? It's so that people can make more informed decisions about the products they choose to consume and support.

I don't know Troy but I have friends who've worked with him. My impression has always been that he thinks everything that comes out of his mouth is profound when it's the type of stuff someone would say in middle school.

For the record, Fuck Troy Baker for promoting this scammy NFT BS.

But I gotta admit that I don't like this. I don't like the connotations and subtle use of implying. We can do better than posting this.
Are you suggesting that the person is subliminally advocating someone go and murder Troy Baker with a golf club?

OP, I'm glad you made this thread. I couldn't find the original tweet, but stuff like this should definitely get more light from the games press.

Right, well it's the agreement we seem to have over the 'obscenity' of his actions that I think warrants this personal stance. Everybody is free to draw their own lines. I'd be perfectly content with less Troy Baker in video games, but I don't have the power to make that happen.

I'll share a story about Troy Baker.

Years ago, when he was at the height of popularity for his VA roles in a lot of anime, I and a few others who were running a college student group (that puts on a yearly convention) invited him to do a panel at said convention. He was the most difficult "guest" we've ever worked with. His list of demands were so over the top, expensive and pretentious it was a headache to deal with: First class airplane tickets, swanky high-class hotel accommodation, room service, in-flight wifi, a dedicated chauffeur available at all times, autographs not allowed, Q&A not allowed, escorts for everywhere he went, paid meals, no interaction with us or any other staff, and just his general mannerisms when he was around was very dismissive and bossy, like we were his servants, even softly "threatening" to leave if we didn't acquiesce, and promptly left as soon as his little 30 minute talk was done. All at our expense.

The following year we invited Kyle Hebert instead, super chill guy, asked for a red eye flight to save us money, lot of fun to hang around, was super nice to everybody, went out to a BBQ with everyone, got us deep fried Oreos and had a great time. Night and day experience.

Damn really? Any details to his behavior?

I saw Troy at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?" I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I wonder if he was always like this, like even during the days of voicing Yuri in Tales of Vesperia and Kanji in Persona 4. Maybe being all video game Hollywood went to his head.
