A volunteer in AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine trial has died in Brazil, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Anvisa, Brazil's health authority, received information from an investigation into the death.

AstraZeneca's phase 3 clinical trial was put on hold in early September after a study participant in the United Kingdom developed a spinal cord injury. The trials have since resumed in the U.K. as well as in Brazil, though they remain on hold in the U.S.

The vaccine candidate is being developed with the University of Oxford.

In the exact same day that bolsonaro says that will NOT buy the "chinese vaccine" because of reasons like "isn't safe" (he didn't give a single reason that was not hypocrisy based on what he previously did) AFTER his minister saying that they will buy the "chinese vaccine" ...and after news about him paying billions for the oxford vaccine

Is this article devoid of content or am I not looking in the right place? It says the candidate died but not how. Did they establish it is linked to the vaccine or virus?

edit: There's literally nothing. This is such shoddy journalism. The vaccine may have killed the candidate but until you get more info, this is borderline FUD.

That's tragic, however the vagueness in that article makes it hard to really understand if the vaccine caused it specifically, it just states it was a spinal chord injury? Was it from the vaccine itself, or did this person just happen to die from an unrelated physical injury while they were conducting tests on them, leading to a shortage of testers causing a delay?

Edit: The wording was a little confusing, seems it was a totally different person in another country, which leads to even more questions to be honest.

I think the volunteer with the spinal injury is a separate case from the one who died.

The spinal cord injury was in a different person. This is possibly the most starved news story I've ever seen.

AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trial Brazil volunteer dies, trial to continue

Brazilian health authority Anvisa said on Wednesday that a volunteer in a clinical trial of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca <AZN.L> and Oxford University had died but added that the trial would continue.

Brazilian health authority Anvisa said on Wednesday that a volunteer in a clinical trial of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca AZN.L and Oxford University had died but added that the trial would continue.

Oxford confirmed the plan to keep testing, saying in a statement that after careful assessment "there have been no concerns about safety of the clinical trial."

Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported that the volunteer had been given a placebo and not the trial vaccine, citing unnamed sources.

Anvisa provided no further details, citing medical confidentiality of those involved in trials.

You guys know some volunteers are in the placebo group right? For all we know the person might not even have gotten the vaccine, let alone died from it

What an irresponsible article if there's no context to how they died. Were they hit by a bus on the way home from the store? Did lightning strike them? Did this vaccine cause complications that led to this person's death? Did they have a condition that would put them more at-risk of dying from COVID-19? Is this just a case of the vaccine not being 100% effective across all people? What the fuck, NBC?

How does a placebo group work in this case anyway? A vaccine is meant to be preventative, so do the people who get the placebo need to purposefully expose themselves to the virus still? I guess that's why the volunteer work would be considered dangerous?

They just see if the percentage of placebo people who get infected is higher than those getting the actual drug. A large company wouldn't risk the lawsuits from knowingly exposing people to the virus.

Terrible way to write this story wow. Makes it seem like it's 100% related to the vaccine when this person was in the placebo group. And I'm assuming anti-vaxxers will take the headline and run with it....

What a fucking awful and irresponsible article.
Nothing in the article is false but it's constructed in a way insinuate something far worse, leaving us with more questions than answers. Mentions of spinal chord injury from the UK trial as if to indicate it's related.

If your news doesn't inform or educate - it's fucking trash. We're living in an anti-vac world, journalists need to be more responsible.

The media in Brazil is reporting that he died from covid-19 complications. He was a doctor so maybe he had more exposure to the virus? Right now, there are some reports that he was in the placebo group.

A classic example of the correlation/causation phenomenon and poor reporting. The volunteer was on the trial and died = must be the experimental vaccine that caused his death. This is highly irresponsible of the journalists involved.

This kind of shoddy news reporting should be outlawed. There's zero info about whether it was caused by it. Just looking for those clicks and sensationalism. And then the mass media wonder why people are so skeptical of them. Well look no further.

It's now appeared on pretty much all the news sites in the UK. Including the BBC, who on the home page have went with 'Covid vaccine trial continues after volunteer dies'. Despite that it looks pretty certain it was in the placebo side of the trial, that only gets mentioned around the sixth or seventh paragraph.

It's like we're actively trying to damage ourselves here.
"Hmm, wonder how we can potentially help the conspiracy theorists.."
"I know! Vague, misleading and potentially damaging headlines!"
"Great idea!"

Since my last post, they've moved the reference to it being the placebo to... paragraph four.

Sky News has it as the second top story on the home page. The article doesn't mention the placebo part until well into the article, paragraph five.

It's the top story on The Sun too.

Sigh.

Articles like this feed the 'fake news' machine. Because this is so clickbait to somewhere hide the reasoning at the bottom.
Don't hide this news, but make it a 'one alinea' story that clearly states it is the placebo.

the vaccine is only meant to help you fight the virus not completely destroy it. we should let more information come out before trying to tie the vaccine to the death.

If they were given the placebo then this is nothing news. They died from something completely unrelated to the vaccine.
