Migration into the state, coupled with generally higher fertility among Latinos than in the non-Hispanic white population, has also driven an increase in the state's Latino population, he said.

Texas added 234,000 Hispanic residents over the year, the most of any state, bringing the overall Hispanic population to roughly 11.2 million.

Still, Potter said that his office, which produces detailed population estimates for the coming years and decades, pushed forward its forecast for when the state would switch from having more white people than any other race to having a Latino plurality.

"We had projected that the Latino population would exceed the ... white population by 2020 and that's probably not going to happen," he said.

Based on the new trends, he said, he now expects Latinos to outnumber non-Hispanic white people in Texas by 2022.

That's probably a result of a slight decline in birth rates among Latinos as well as a slowing of immigration from Mexico and other Latin American countries over the last decade, Potter said.

Meanwhile, he said, growth in the state's white population has effectively flattened.

In any case, demographers have said for years that Texas' increasing ethnic diversity will shape the state's future.

The Lone Star State's populations of Asians and people who identified as two or more races both grew by about 4 percent over the year.

And at 3.8 million, Texas had the largest black or African-American population of any state in the country.

GOP is going to have to go hard on gerrymandering and voter suppression between now and 2020.

And due to gerrymandering they won't have the votes be represented as a majority until probably 2032 :/

I wish more hispanics would be a good thing for Dems but they (us) aren't a reliable voting block. I mean sure they will most likely vote Dem but from personal experience, GOP have done some ways to brainwash them and feed them the "one of us" koolaid plus the fact some of us have the "F you got mine" mentality and a conservative view as well.

Wish I didnt think this way but even if we become a large voting block, its not going to mean states will be progressive. I really hope im proven wrong and Dems get most of our future votes.

Which hispanic people love to do once they get theirs.

There's quite a few that already do that. My wife is half Mexican, and some of her Mexican relatives are conservative and harsh on immigration. There's this weird feud between Mexican nationals vs their Mexican American cousins, basically rooted in resentments for leaving Mexico. When I see them sharing vile stuff against immigration and pro Trump it doesn't bother me as much because I know it's not rooted in racism.

Wasn't there something about even with white voters dwindling that they still would hold power? Im assuming because hispanics and other minorities (majorities then) will vote against their interests?

edit: mess up post.

good thing the GOP have done a fine job alienating and demonizing hispanics. of course some will vote for republicans anyway since they consider themselves white and the good ones.

I was looking at data on hispanic/latino population sizes across the country yesterday and knew this was happening, but it's moving even faster than I thought. This country will be a totally different place ethnically/racially even by 2030. I can't begin to imagine what it'll be like by 2050. Republican politics is going to go through some weird phases between now and then. That much is for sure.
Will Hispanics be considered "white" by the GOP to appease them by then?
Maybe like 30% of us.

Some hispanics vote against their interests. I mean look at all the stories of husbands or wives being deported that voted for Trump.

I'm salivating over the thought of a blue Texas and that someday in the next 14 years or so Republicans won't be able to win the presidency and they will have fewer senators backing the party. I know it'll be tough still because of voter id laws and rampant gerrymandering, but their days are numbered and they know it. Get out and vote this election and in 2020.

I can definitely see culturally reclassifying it to include white hispanics as they become more affluent on average. Most Hispanics in Mexico are already multiracial with a lot of iberian and French ancestory, and if you combine that with another white parent visually they look very white.

White has been a moving definition. Not too long ago Irish, Jewish, and others weren't white.

I know someone who within the last 2 years became US citizen and first chance she goes and votes for Tramp. She is Salvadorian, white and is married to a white dude. I don't give a shit but im sure she was influence by her partner or her upbringing next to a certain crowd.

When she told me this she said she wanted "something new" or some shit. Well I wanted to yell at her that she just fkd a bunch of people but I mean its her vote. I wonder what she things of the TPS thing being revoked from Salvies now. She seems like she grew up here in the US but it kills me these people exist. Mofo you were given a chance and now vote to make people miserable like you? Maddening....

Ah, I thought it was a higher number.
Still higher than it should be considering the policies that hurt them and their families...

Cubans.

I mean, Ted Cruz is a Texan Hispanic.

He's a Canadian-Hispanic.

No. Because they're younger than 18 and some of them aren't legally able to vote.

Haha, Ted Cruz are one of those guys who adopt race out of convenience.

Last name Cruz, loves being white and talking shit about Latinos. But when it's time to whip votes, dances around about his Hispanic background.

Don't fall for those types of people's song and dance.
I mean, Ted isn't even his actual first name, it's his middle name. His real first name is Rafael.

It'd be more interesting to see, say, the percentage of Mexicans or Central Americans that vote for Trump. Because Hispanic or latino are such broad categories and you can be any race and still be Hispanic or Latino. The fact that 28% of hispanics vote for trump doesn't surprise me because a lot of them are very light skinned and consider themselves "different" than their darker skinned counterparts.

Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Florida are next after Texas.

California and New Mexico are the only two states atm where Latinos outnumber the white population.
