What is their digital currency business?

PSN cards, Microsoft Points(at least they were called that back when i owned a MS console) and Eshop Credit.

Lots of people still need these kinds of cards, and at least in europe(from my experience in Switzerland, Germany and luxembourg) Gamestop used to be one of the few stores that carried Eshop cards.

And probably the biggest thing being Steam cards, since PC gaming is quite big, especially in Europe.

I don't think anyone is really doubting the game will be big, it's just some people think that it will be the end of everything, blow everything out when the first game sold 15 million which is a huge number for sure but not what people make it sound like, remains to be seen how this will do.
Didn't GTA V triple IV's sales? Isn't GoW expected to double franchise best?
Didn't Zelda just have its best selling entry in history?

There's room for growth, and I think the current market is generously conducive to that.

At the end of the day these are still preorders from GameStop which won't really tell us everything about how the game will do.

But people knowing about a gaming IP and buying a console for it means they are gamers, no? It is not like Pokémon where there are plenty of other ways for people to know about it, anyways it's not a big deal.
Knowing about the IP doesn't make you a gamer. Buying the Switch I'd say does. I think he meant to say casual gamers rather than non gamers. but that's just a guess.

Smash is a big enough IP to be known by people who don't play, but I doubt it would convince anyone who isn't a gamer to become one and buy a console.

It's going to be a blockbuster season September to March. But RDR2 will for sure be top dog. After that it's a close race.

EDIT: I don't know why I put march. I was probably thinking about the season after. I don't edit enough. Over half a year isn't a season.

I'd just give up. Sony's showcase, MS Showcase, Nintendo too all pretty good. Yet RDR2 is going to shit down each of their throats without even showing gameplay yet. It's not even a fair fight.

79.5 million views over 3 trailers on Youtube for RDR2 and that's the official channel only.

I don't know how Rockstar do it but it'll be insane.

Their 'billion dollars in digital currency sales' has my interest piqued, and makes me wonder what the profit margins are on those cards. If someone is taking advantage of a trade deal to buy these Gamestop could potentially be giving store credit well over the value of the individual games being traded, and the surplus stock problems that come with it. There's the possibility of them 'losing' money on some of these sales.

Gamestop is a strange company, curious to see what happens to them over the next few years.

Sure but Zelda and GoW were never as big as the first RDR so it's easier for them to grow and GTAV is a once in a lifetime thing imo, it remains to be seen how this will do as I've said.

Hmm, that's odd. I live in the countryside in Norway and my local grocery store carries PSN and eshop cards along with play store, apple and spotify cards.
Gamestop sells them too of course.

I also don't get them touting their digital currency business. Margins have to be incredibly low on those cards. I guess it's basically "free money", but profit can't be that substantial from them.

No reason to be even mildly surprised by RDR2. It's the game that is finally making me purchase a console.

Yeah I agree. We know RDR2 will do insanely well, but I feel like HOW well remains to be seen. It seems like some are expecting it to do GTA numbers when the setting and type of story it tells just aren't as universally appealing or mainstream as GTA is

Wait until you are preordering pokemon let's go with your 7 year old daughter and the gamestop dude tells about the pokeball ;)
I didn't want it myself but I "had" to order it.

Yeah, my now 9 year old niece has her bday soon (she loves games) and imI not sure what to get. She likes the Pokemon show but though sun was too easy/boring and quit halfway and let's go looks even more simple.

Maybe I'll just get her a switch and let her figure the games out.

I don't get why people would doubt the launch of RDR2.

I could get doubting the legs if you expect the game to suck, the same way Fallout 4 launched at 12 million copies on day one (up from 7 million week 1 for Skyrim), but seemingly ended lower than Skyrim by a fair margin, but the launch is going to have a ton of good will based on RDR1 and GTAV, and there are not so many red flags as to make people question their preorder.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Fallout 4 sold better than Skyrim, and was in fact Bethesda Game Studio's best selling game? It's hard to find concrete data for what publishers say about the sales of their games, so that's why I'm confused.

Surprised Spiderman didn't get a mention with it being one of the few games Sony showcased at E3, it being the only Sony game releasing for the rest of the year, and it winning all them e3 awards. What gives?

Honestly, if she's only 9 years old and already lost interest in a Pokemon game on account of it being too easy, letting her choose is probably the best course, LOL.

It did not. It was their best selling game at launch, but nothing has sold more than Skyrim (or rather, few things have). Skyrim has sold over 30 million copies, and is the highest selling RPG of all time. Fallout 4 probably didn't even crack half that.

Wait, how are they non gamers if they know about smash and bought a Switch?

Smash is huge. When I showed someone my Switch once, literally the first thing they asked me was "Does it have a Super Smash [sic] game?"

This was before the initial announcement so I just awkwardly replied "Eventually."

The Games Industry interview is about the Q4 calendar, there is no reason to bring Spider-Man here. Here is the quote from the GameStop guy.

"I'm looking forward to an incredible Q4," he says. "You're kicking off with Call of Duty and going into Red Dead Redemption 2, then you have NBA and Assassin's Creed and Battlefield and then you're going all the way through December when you're ending up with Smash Bros and you've got Pokémon and Fallout 76 in November - that's a powerful holiday line-up.

If it's really Spider-Man you seek, then it's also mentioned by the journalist when he points out that there is no major release planned between God of War (april 20th) and Spider-Man (september 7th) and how this is a disappointing situation for GameStop.

Once again, retailers face a span of months without heavy hitting blockbusters to lure people into stores. Arguably the last massive release was April's God of War (and that's a platform-exclusive) and the next title likely to cause the most excitement is Spider-Man (another exclusive, both from Sony) on September 7. It's an issue that continues to bewilder GameStop.

That makes sense given q4 context. I assumed Spiderman pre-orders would be healthy given focus by Sony

Ita recognised up there as some of Nintendo's moat popular IP.

Only behind Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and Donkey Kong (and maybe Splatoon).

Smash sells buckets for Nintendo, even on Wii U.
It's well above DK and Zelda in terms of sales potential, given Brawl and Smash 4 (combined)

RDR2 not even being there and yet taking the spotlight is hilarious.

It's amazing how Rockstar does it...Such a behemoth. No gameplay no trailer no presence still taking the win. It just shows how much the average consumer trusts them and enjoys their games.

Rdr was amazing and I sure am in for rdr2.

There was early worries about God of War pre-order numbers being low, then it broke a bunch of sale records on release. I'm sure Spider-Man will be fine.
God of War had incredible reviews. There have been many bad Spider-Man games in the past so people may be skeptical.

Speaking of the Skyrim/Fallout 4 discrepancy, I noticed you said "seemingly" but I'll still ask: what do we know about Fallout 4's lifetime sales achievement? I've wondered about this for some time but whenever I remember to look it up I'm on my mobile, lol.

So I went to look into this since I realized that most of the quick drop off I saw was with retail numbers, and then remembered that digital was growing astronomically after Fallout 4's launch.

Apparently Fallout 4's first three years outsold Skyrim's first three years, according to Pete Hines, which would put it over 20 million for that period.

Skyrim eventually got over 30 million, but presumably this would mean Fallout 4 could be on track to beat that.

Well in the end, Spider-Man will sell over 10 million copies, just like Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and TLOU2. Seems like preorder numbers are good, too. It will be fine.

It's bigger then all those. Except 2D Mario.

It's sells tend be better then 3D Mario games most of the time as well. Zelda isn't nearly as big as Smash.

It's funny about the PokeBall controller... The comments were like a lightswitch. When it first got announced, I read so many comments saying how awesome it is and how everyone had to get one! ....that all changed when they announced Mew's exclusivity in there. Then people hated the PokeBall.

Source on that last bit? This interview suggests the opposite. 10m should be the floor but there's no indication pre-orders are healthy

Notes:
  • GameStop expects we will see more game releases in the April through August window in the future due to how well games are doing outside traditional windows, but that it might take a few years for development schedules to match up with that due to how long games take to make.
Source: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...-gamestop-looking-forward-to-an-incredible-q4

To be honest, this should have been done years ago. I thought it was completely stupid to let those few months just sit there without many major releases.
