OregonLive said:
A black Oregon state representative says one of her constituents called police on her Tuesday while she was canvassing alone in a neighborhood she represents.

Rep. Janelle Bynum, a Democrat who is running for a second term this fall in the state House, said she was knocking on doors and talking to residents for two hours along Southeast 125th Avenue in Clackamas. She was taking notes on her cellphone from the conversation she'd had with someone at the second to last of about 30 homes on her list around 5:10 p.m. when a Clackamas County deputy pulled up to her.
OregonLive said:
She looked over at the deputy in his patrol car and thought, "I don't believe this." He asked if she was selling something. She introduced herself as a state legislator and said that she was out canvassing and that she guessed someone called him.

The deputy said someone called and reported Bynum appearing to spend a long time at houses in the area and appearing to be casing the neighborhood while on her phone.

She estimates knocking on more than 70,000 doors over her years campaigning and said Tuesday was the first time someone reported her to police.

"It was just bizarre," Bynum told The Oregonian/OregonLive. "It boils down to people not knowing their neighbors and people having a sense of fear in their neighborhoods, which is kind of my job to help eradicate. But at the end of the day, it's important for people to feel like they can talk to each other to help minimize misunderstandings."

OregonLive said:
She said she asked the deputy to call the woman so she could speak to her, and he got her on the phone.

The woman was apologetic and said she called 911 for the safety of her neighborhood, Bynum said. The woman wouldn't confirm where she lived.

UPDATE: Transcript of 911 Call

WWeek said:
Dispatcher: Police and Fire dispatch.

Caller: Hi, so I just wanted to kind of inform you guys that we have this lady that's been walking up from Mather, and uhm, like for no apparent reason is walking from house to house. And she's not in like any business or have any badge or have anything [interrupted].

D: Can you tell me where this is at?

C: Oh yea, of course that would probably help. Uhm so she walked up from Mather Road and now she's walking on 125th. And the weird thing is, is that she just stops at the end of the driveway whether or not she talks to somebody. So, she like knocks on the door and then if somebody is there or not, she'll stop at the end of the driveway and enters something into her phone. And I mean it takes a couple minutes per house.

D: Did she talk to you or did you talk to her at all?

C: No, I didn't. So, My son said "hi" to her because he's three and says "hi" to everybody. But then she like didn't come to us but she's gone to every other house that's like…

D: When people aren't home?

C: It looks like not home.

D: Okay, that's what I'm saying. So, when people aren't home she stops and goes to the… [interrupted]

C: Oh, I'm sorry. Yea. It looks like she spends more time at the end of the driveway for people who are not home. And she's gone to one, two, three, four… She's on her seventh house that I can see. I just think it's weird because usually people are out of town for this weekend and I don't recognize her, so… and she clearly like avoided us.

D: You guys were outside at the time?

C: Yea, we're packing actually to leave for for the Fourth, so. So, We've been back and forth for the last half an hour and I mean it doesn't seem she has any real reason that we can tell. And she's just in regular street clothes, like camo pants and a white shirt and no badge that I can see.

D: Is she a white female?

C: Uh, no. She's African American from what I can tell. Her hair is up in a bun.

D: How old?

C: Uhm, I would say late thirties, early forties just from what I saw across the street.

D: Ok. Medium, heavy build?

C: Uhm, kind of between medium and heavy build.

D: How tall?

C: Mmm… No taller than 5'9", again, across the street.

D: And her hair is in a bun?

C: Yeah. It's black.

D: What's she wearing?

C: Uh, White t-shirt, like a 3/4 sleeve t-shirt and, uh, like capris, uh, camo pants is what it looked like.

D: Alright. We'll have them check it out, okay?

C: Would you be able to let us know if they find out anything or? 'Cause like I said we're going out of town, so if we need to come back to the house for any reason.

D: I don't, I mean, If you want an extra call, I can put in a request that they contact you with what they find. It's just a lot of times they're going between call to call. Especially on the holiday. I can put the request in though.

C: If they have time that would be great, but if not it's no big deal. We're just curious ourselves because we're going out of town.

D: Ok.

C: Ok. I appreciate your time. Thank you so much. Bye.

D: No problem. Bye.

I can't quite put my finger on it but I think there might be more to it.

Sad.

Like I said in the other Oregon thread: I'm a mailman, started out in Oregon. One day while I was out delivering a route I was pulled over by a Beaverton cop. In the mail truck, in my uniform in the afternoon. He thought I was "casing houses". I was in disbelief. Guess I looked a little too Mexican that day.

If you go literally anywhere outside of Oregon's downtown areas, you're in for some normalized white supremacy

At least Officer Campbell seems to be a good dude.

Fuck the woman who called him though. Ignorant ass bitch doesn't even know her own district's rep but claims to be
calling the cops for 'the safety of her neighborhood.'

so you're saying I should take Oregon off of my list of possible relocation destinations?

There are really scary towns there. I've lived through L.A. in the 90s and I never once felt as scared here as I did with my 5 years in Beaverton, Oregon. So many signs outside homes that read "I DON'T CALL 911 *picture of gun*". I'd be getting my gas pumped and the attendant would start going off on "muslim obama" or I'd be delivering to an apartment complex and the on-duty manager would start ranting about "illegals taking every fucking job".

It's even hickier on the coast, believe it or not.

*edit* The natural beauty there is incredible, though. Try to avoid the racist assholes and experience places like Little Crater Lake, Timothy Lake, Lost Lake, Multnomah Falls (sad face).

Portland is a great city, but I have no idea how racist it actually is in comparison to other cities. I'd recommend taking a trip here and see for yourself. The white suburbs around the city can be pretty shit from what I've heard.

This demographic really can't stop themselves.

Clearly she's a threat. Kudos for her taking a photo and making light of it.

I'm black and live in Portland. I'm originally from Los Angeles.

Oregon is a outrageously beautiful state, and the largest cities like Eugene, Salem I don't feel uncomfortable in but any other city in Oregon my head is on a fucking swivel. And I'm including all of Portlands neighboring cities in that, like Beaverton (where Nike is located) in that.

I love Portland, but as a black dude I do feel "different" here because people do go completely out of their way to be nice to someone black. It is what it is and I get people just want others to feel welcome, but I definitely notice it.

Speaking as a white guy who spent the first 22 years of my life there

Seattle and LA are really nice
Seattle is on top of my list. LA...man idunno. Always had good experiences out there but not sure about the people. Maybe it's time to give the region a second look.

Portland is nice but it's super white.

Most other cities, especially east, are super white and super racist.
disappointing to hear.

Look on the bright side, the second civil war is tomorrow and if we win then things will probably get less racist lol

*Does something else*

"Oh well not like THAT"

*Ask for the "right" way to do this shit*

"Well it's not my responsibility to come up with a solution for you people"

It's the circle of life, my dude.

I'm black and I live in Portland, having moved here from Chicago some years back.

For the most part, I like it here and don't feel uncomfortable. The key difference between here and there is that there is way less diversity (I don't quite feel like I'm the only one here that's black however, living in the city). The lack of black people/community may bother some (it's there, but small and spread out due to the low black population).

Chicago/Rural Illinois can actually be pretty racist depending on where you go (a testament to how segregated that city is), so Portland/Rural Oregon isn't that much different in that aspect I think. To get the best read, you just have to visit here and see for yourself. You may have a slightly different experience. I feel like it doesn't really matter that much ultimately because there's no place you can move to "escape" racism and prejudice people, it's just something you have to account for as you go about life.

Even if she wasn't a state legislator, why wild it matter if she were going door to door selling something? Holy shit these racists fucking Nosey Nancys need to be charged when they make false claims like these.

Some neighborhoods do have no soliciting clauses in HOA and such. Says a lot though that the person that called wouldn't give her home address. So in the end it didn't matter to them. Things could have been explained and communication could have been made.

While I would call the police too if I saw someone suspicious going around houses in my neighborhood she was clearly not a threat or even suspicious. It's ridiculous that anyone could see her and think "oh man better call the police". That's just bullshit.

Wonder if she also calls 911 on Mormons, Jehovah's witnesses, and the local pizza place going door to door with flyers.

Suppose it depends on whether or not they happen to be black.

Edit: Fixed spelling. Stupid autocorrect.

Going by the photo at least the police don't seem to have escalated things.

But yeah, must be soul destroying to have this shit happen to you.

Hello, police?

Yes, I'd like to report an emergency.

Yes, that's right, I've just seen a dark one walking around, and doing all the things.

Yes, a dark one. Like a Halle Berry, but more. Yes, she's doing all the things.

Please hurry, it's getting closer and it's going to do all of the things to me *sobs gently*

Can you imagine the 911 operator's inner thoughts on that call?

"Someone somewhere could be bleeding out and I'm on the phone with this lady..."

The amount of fear (hate) people have for black people even when they're doing innocuous activities will never cease to astound me.
