Found this cool video that uses a weighted decisions matrix to rank which console is the greatest. The video doesn't have many views but it's really well made, so i had to share it.

Edit:

PS2 > NES > PSX > SNES > 360 > Wii > Atari = Genesis > N64 > DC = PS3 > XBOX > GCN > Saturn = TG16 > Master System > 3DO > Jaguar for people who can't watch the vid

I would move PSX in 2nd place, PS3 higher but behind 360 due to online revolution, and put the shitty Wii as far to the back of the bus as possible.

You need some serious rose tinted glasses to rank the NES anywhere near the top of the list. The ammount of terrible games outweighs the great ones by far, even some of the great ones aren't that great in retrospect.

Using metrics doesnt immediately make something objective....also what the hell is with this weird obsession with "objective truth"..... so dumb

Dude, without the Wii, we likely wouldn't have motion gaming at all, nor gyroscope technology. We wouldn't have gyro controls in any system, we wouldn't have control schemes for VR, we wouldn't have a lot of things. The Wii was revolutionary and has affected gaming massively to this day.

I can't see anyone objecting PS2 being number one.

I would. I never had that much fun with the PS2, to be honest. And that was after the sensational PS1 that had tons of games I loved dearly.

I'd honestly guess the PS2 love is a lot of nostalgia and that the folks who love their PS2s are just the ones who were like 6-12 when the PS2 was in their prime - so they automatically have some crazy love for it, is that possible? I remember that for years the console didnt have any good RPGs and it's the console where Square's output went to shit. The PS2 took a long time to really get going (at the start the Dreamcast still had easily the better software library and since the PS2 was awkward to code for you saw ports that lagged behind the Dreamcast visually and perf wise) and looking back, there's maybe a handful of titles or so that I'd really wanna get back to. NES, SNES and PS1 had way more timeless classics in my opinion.

Ps4 > Ps2 > Ps1 > 360 > Ps3 > OG XBOX.

My best list.

Worst list :

GameCube > Wii > PSP > Gameboy Micro.

For years, maybe? But the platform as it exists has lots of great RPGs. Three Shadow Hearts and seven SMTs with a Dragon Quest that all of which are better than any PS1 RPG save for maybe FFIX.

EDIT: Okay, I forgot Parasite Eve, that's more of a hybrid experience, but still, it's a masterpiece for sure.

Ok, you're a crazy person ;) I counter with Suikoden 1+2, Final Fantasy Tactics, FFVII and DQVII. DQVIII was the first full 3d Dragon Quest that I always felt was a bit lacking.

Nah, i don't really think making this list objectivily is really possible, but is so werid he relies in so much subjectivity to input his matrix. Like, how he came up with the weights for each parameter? Based on how he feels?

I didnt wacthed everything, but he considers things like attach rates and gaming population grow at all?

The entire premise of this video is bogus: it purports to be objective but he's the one who came up with the parameters. It's also exclusively from a western perspective (betraying the whole objectivity thing) judging by the low positions of the Saturn and the PC Engine and the high placing of the 2600.

Cool, I'll watch when I get home but a glance at that list and I don't disagree.

Real list (Obviously omitting many systems, started to be tempted to insert Lynx but thought better of it):

SNES > NES > PS1 > Dreamcast > Gamecube > N64 > Saturn > Genesis > 360 > PS2 > PS3 > Xbox > Wii

I can't see anyone objecting PS2 being number one.

SNES has a better library is all.

The same can be said about PSX/PS2. A great console has lot of great games but the vast majority will always be filled with junk games.

Definitely disagree with the PS3 being so low, or the worst last gen system as they have it. It was a fantastic platform once we approached the 2010s, and still has several great features not present on the PS4.

Swap the places of the NES and 360, then you have a pretty accurate list.

Watched the video fully now, i like how it tried to be objective as possible, espcially how difficult it can be comparing consoles from decades ago.

I didnt like the 'game quality' one though. Just picking from a small selection of some of the best games and then just assigning it too the console.

Zuh? Why is this not ok to you?

Because, and this purely subjective mind you, i would honestly question somebody who would genuinely rather play the Atari library over a PS3, Gamecube, or Xbox library. Espcially outside the 'core' gaming group.

Plus for alot of the older consoles, the percentage of 'bad ' games vs good is ( again, conplete assumption ) probably way in the favor of bad games. Atleast with newer consoles there is atleast a base level of quality consistency.

Again, it makes sense in the way the ranking is determined, but i think at this point trying to rank console experience, which is something purely subjective, is just never going to work.

PS2 arguement however is pretty much sound though. Hard to deny it as the GOAT.

Nothing will ever top the PS2's greatness.
SNES and PS2 are neck and neck for me for favorite console of all time, but I still give a slight edge to the SNES. While I think the PS2 had a larger volume of great games overall, the SNES has more (concentrated) of my favorite games of all time. My top 4 games of all time (and possibly more...it's just the top 4 that I am iron-clad on) are all on SNES: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Super Mario World, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

If PS1 isn't at the top of your list then you're doing games wrong. Come on!

The PS2 from a hardware perspective was also shit.

No 4 payer support
No online
Forced memory cards
Hell on developers

For a console with th monopoly in its gen, it's library wasn't that great anyway. Particularly if JRPGs aren't your thing.

Also pretty sure the Dreamcast crossed 10 million.

The Wii si to high I would place him a little lower than consola had to many shovelware and the fame was because was the first console to implement fitness games. That's cool because I miss EA active franchise.

Interesting. I feel very differently than you do about DQVIII (full disclosure - it was my first DQ game ever). It's one of the few 3D games that feels like a perfect embodiment of the spirit of a classic 2D game to me. It's a borderline Top 10 game of all time for me.

In fact, the only other two games in 3D that I feel that embody the spirit of 2D games incredibly well off the top of my head are Super Mario Galaxy (feels like a 3D version of Super Mario World - a feeling that I never got from Mario 64 nor Mario Sunshine) and Bloodborne (feels like a 3D extension of a classic Castlevania) I tried playing DQVII a couple of years ago and got burned out after 20 hours, but do hope to get back to it again some day...

How are they objectively better though?
Objectivity should only be used for stating facts, not using it to make your opinions sound valid. Consensus is what you want.

While I have some issues with the criteria and how it was chosen, particularly the Critical Fanfare rankings, which is also the most heavily weighted criterion. Furthermore the inclusion of marginal power in the list using a statistic that the creator of the video even admits he doesn't understand seems like a poor choice. Nonetheless I love seeing statistical, data-driven analysis of these types of questions. I do think all factors included I would have to vote for PS2 but only because its BC allows it full access to the entire PS1 library.
