read the OT before your driveby "lol fuck star wars fans they don't know fucking shit" posts, the creator of this fan edit is a fan of the film. Also, it's just for fun so relax. Also we can't post links but it's not hard to find.

Synopsis: It's the same Star Wars: The Last Jedi you pondered over, cleared of distractions. The trip to the casino of Canto Bight is truncated, the Caretakers of Ach-To are removed, and a few scenes are rearranged, allowing Rian Johnson's story to shine. Strap in for a contemplative journey not experienced since The Empire Strikes Back.

Intention: To address a few standout issues about the film which distract from its focus. This is a fairly conservative edit, doing what is possible to streamline the film without radically altering it.

The Star Wars Fan Edit community has been going strong for a good 18 years now, dating back to the infamous "Phantom Edit" from 2000 that removed 18 minutes from Episode 1 in an attempt to fix the film. Since then, we've seen many Prequels edits created in a similar vein, basically attempting to make a bad film good. As well, we've seen tons of fan edits of the Original Trilogy, such as the ANH and ESB Revisited, which attempt to create a less cringeworthy "Special Edition" of each film, leaving out George's bad CGI and fixing or cleaning up certain errors from the original film. Perhaps most the most famous Star Wars fanedits are Harmy's Despecialized Editions of the Original Trilogy, which uses various different sources to essentially patch together a watchable, high quality version of the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy.

But now we've arrived at the Sequel Trilogy.

Almost immediately after watching The Last Jedi, which I enjoyed, I nonetheless knew the fan edit community would have a field day with the film. Out of place comedy, the detour to Canto Bight that went on too long and felt like something straight out of the prequels, some cringeworthy lines of dialogue... all distracting from the fantastic story taking place between Rey, Kylo and Luke.

Hal 9000 brings us The Last Jedi: Legendary. Hal is not new to the fan edit game and has been praised for his three prequel edits, as well as his episode VII edit. Now he tackles TLJ with what he describes as a "conservative edit", cutting a mere 9 minutes off its original runtime.

Here is a complete list of the cuts and additions to the film. Hal added some of the deleted scenes to the film as well:

⁃ Trimmed the opening 'prank call' joke to prevent it from venturing into SNL territory while retaining the core of the humor

- Trimmed Paige kicking the ladder slightly

- Removed Hux being berated by Snoke at the end of the opening sequence

- Reinstated the 'Luke Has a Moment' deleted scene

- Reinstated the deleted scene where Poe gives Finn back his jacket (with scene transition provided by OT.com user pleasehello)

⁃ At their first meeting, removed Finn telling Rose to breathe

⁃ Removed Rose repeating, "They can track us through lightspeed."

⁃ Removed both appearances from the 'Caretakers' on Ach-to (with a visual effects shot courtesy of OT.com user snooker)

⁃ Trimmed away the lone porg who gives Chewie the doughy eyes, though leaving the joke intact otherwise

⁃ Removed Luke's line to R2, "Nothing can make me change my mind."

⁃ Cut down the first sequence at Canto Bight to focus solely on finding the master codebreaker (also removing sounds of coins rattling around inside BB8 in two shots)

- Blended the original Anakin lightsaber ignition sound with the existing different sounds for two shots

- Made it appear as though Finn and Rose follow DJ out of the cell, briefly elude the guards, and the scene ends. Next time we see the trio, they are already in hyperspace (also removing the implication in the later scene that BB8 helped steal the ship).

⁃ Removed Rey asking Kylo Ren is he has a cowl to put on

- Added a center wipe transition from the scene with Finn, Rose, and DJ in hyperspace to the fleet losing their medical frigate

- Used a few shots from a deleted scene to remove the iron/spaceship gag, which borrowed from an old spoof which laughed at Star Wars rather than along with Star Wars (film speck removed by OT.com user poppasketti)

⁃ Trimmed some of the comedy with BB8 being placed under a basket

⁃ Trimmed the heavy, direct hinting before Snoke's death, using musical score from TFA (courtesy of OT.com user poppasketti)

⁃ Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey's parents are buried in the Jakku desert, as this seems at odds with the vision we saw in The Force Awakens.

⁃ Moved the scene with Luke and Yoda to immediately prior to Leia looking out over Crait (using audio and video provided by OT.com user Darthrush)

⁃ Removed Finn's line about the battering ram canon being "old Death Star tech."

⁃ The crate Luke sits on as he talks with Leia is now stationary and motionless, unaffected by him (effect provided by OT.com user poppasketti)

⁃ Removed Rey's triple-TIE combo shot, with the Falcon's involvement in the battle being first revealed with its shadow sweeping by and a single TIE being shot down

⁃ Trimmed Hux ordering fighters to follow the Falcon, leaving this poor tactical move to be attributed to Kylo Ren's emotional priorities

⁃ Removed Finn's line, "Oh, they hate that ship!"

⁃ Abbreviated Finn's suicide run, so that the audience hasn't had enough time to accept it and get totally on board with it (toward the end of a film that relishes jerking its audience around)

⁃ After Rose saves Finn, removed her line about not "fighting what we hate" and "saving what we love."

- Removed spot on the sun as Luke gazes out after collapsing, which caused some presumably inadvertent misdirection for some upon first viewing (courtesy of OT.com user poppasketti)

- Snuck in a Wilhelm scream... somewhere in the movie.

I plan to give this fan edit a watch sometime this week, as those changes all sound really good to me and touch on a lot of the pacing problems I had with the film while leaving what I enjoyed in tact.

So what do you think of these changes? Too much? Not enough? Can a film like The Last Jedi be fixed with some edits here and there, or do you think it's too fundamentally flawed at its core? Or is it perfect as it is?

A lot of these sound good to be honest. I'd be interested to watch it to see if if fixes what was also a poor story.

I don't get these changes.

I'd be interested to check this out - I love TLJ but agree there's some weird comedy and pacing issues.

As a fan of last jedi, most of these sound good espcially the removing off some of the comedy that really didnt work. Some odd nit picks though for scene removal

Never had a problem with the canto blight stuff so shame that got cut.

Will give it a watch sometime though when i just want a quick viewing off the last jedi

Sounds interesting. I do agree, OP, keep the drive-by remarks at bay.
It might be shit, but it might also actually be good.

This honestly sounds mostly great. Some changes see kind of oddly nitpicky, but others abbreviate a lot of scenes that I thought were shaky.

While I still dont agree with some directions and plot choices (Snoke is a nobody, "Knights of Ren who?", some Luke stuff, Holdo being elusive to Poe for no partocularly helpful reason), this sounds like a much tighter experience with less flat humor that would allow the bright parts of TLJ to really shine more.

That sounds good to me. And I like last jedi.

It's a good movie with some glaring flaws. It could be a great movie.

Honestly the caretakers are much better if you add the deleted scenes involving them back into the film,

This is kind of whatever
Though Ren says they're burried in a desert. I dont think he ever specifies Jakku.

I haven't seen a second of the edit, I completely agree with those last 2 points. Those scenes were just awful and Finn should have just died. At least it doesn't drag on now I'd assume. That whole part was pointless, as was most of the movie. I don't agree with the first point though, I don't get that change,

Good grief.

Why remove the Rose line?
Or the iron joke, or the caretakers?
This is dumb. Sorry if that's "drive by", but the list of edits is more embarrassing than the things it is editing.

The whole list is full of 'but why doe" but this one is especially, uh, why:

"⁃ Removed Rey's triple-TIE combo shot, with the Falcon's involvement in the battle being first revealed with its shadow sweeping by and a single TIE being shot down"

I knew that the Rose and Finn trash would be removed. And good thing they did. I'll watch this at some point too. Don't plan on watching TLJ theatrical ever again though.

Yeah, Finn should have been serviced better as a character by dying and losing out on any screentime whatsoever in IX in favor of a pointless sacrifice...

That doesn't make sense, bub.

It's fascinating to see what other people deem necessary to edit out to "save" the movie.

How would Rose saving Finn at the end even work after cutting the dialogue? She just rams him and then he takes her back to base? That'd just be jarring. Graned I haven't seen the movie in a while, maybe there was more dialogue there that I'm forgetting.

I'm saying in the situation presented in the movie, I would have rather seen him die. Rather than try to be a hero and be stopped. He went from one of my favorite characters in tfa to doing pretty much nothing in tlj and being misused overall.

Also I'm really curious how it would have been pointless?
