The Stussining
Absolver is a beautifully designed, completely unique 3rd-person fighting game. IMO it's the best new take on the fighting genre since SSB!
DWSLFRs.jpg

The combat system essentially uses deck-building for moves (think God Hand's combo creation system), and lets you replace any moves in your deck as you learn more.
The move learning system is genius: you learn moves by being attacked by them, and learn them faster if you show you can react to them (parry/dodge/absorb/stagger). I would love it if other games stole this mechanic, it makes you hunt for new moves instead of just grinding to hit an arbitrary number. It's super rewarding to finally unlock a rare attack. You can save multiple decks and share them with other players. If you fight someone and like their style (or get the snot beaten out of you) you can join their "school" which lets you equip their deck and their abilities, even if you haven't unlocked those moves yet (although you can't directly edit their deck, if you want to change it you'll have to unlock the moves).

Which moves you can use at any time are determined by your stance. Your stance is basically 4 directions which you can turn your body relative to your enemy. Each move has an entry and exit stance, so to create a combo you'll have to choose moves that can flow together. In each stance you can either use your standard combo or an alternate attack, (so there are only 2 attack buttons to worry about, more like SSB than traditional fighters). The alternate attacks serve dual purpose of being attacks that you can use mid-combo and also transitioning to another stance mid-combo.
eiSfQv3.png

Aside from attacks you can also dodge (other face button), block (left trigger), feint (left trigger right after a move starts), and switch stances (right stick while blocking). Aside from switching stances, the right stick is mainly used for your special ability. Special abilities are determined by which style you pick (which also changes some stats), and let you parry/absorb/avoid/stagger.

There's also some mana-using abilities mapped to the d-pad. These are things like healing or shockwaves or earthquakes. You can also summon weapons with mana, which allows you to use an entirely different deck!

To top it all off, there's also an inventory system. Each item has weight, cut resistance, and blunt damage resistance. Your character's total weight determines how fast you move and attack. You unlock loot constantly, there's a ton of it, and it's consistently cool looking (at least IMO).

This game is a masterpiece and needs WAY more appreciation! I can't believe it hasn't been nominated for more multiplayer GOTY awards. I can't stop gushing about it to friends and it has kept me coming back for over 100 hours thus far. It makes me want to be a better designer.

Yeah, it is good, OP. Played it for a while and enjoyed it, but never really figured out how to make a cracking moveset though.

Game was awesome but I had to refund it due to lack of 21:9 support. Come on guys, it's an Unreal Engine 4 game. Even a half assed "the HUD doesn't scale properly but at least you're not losing 30% of your screen" fix would be appreciated at this point.

As usual, the awesome community at WSGF stepped up to the plate and implemented a fix without access to the source code. This should not be happening in 2017, especially with a game with these system requirements.

I was initially interested in it but the heavy pvp focus and lack of pve content turned me off.

Same.

I was drooling when I saw the reveal trailer, then some time later it was revealed the game was going to be a pure pvp experience.

Can't help but imagine the deck system described here integrated into an epic single player campaign sprawling multiple areas and regions.

I wanted to like it so much, as I'm a huge God Hand fan, but I didn't care for the online only, Souls-like inscrutable structure of the game at all. If they put out a single player campaign with the same fighting engine I would be there day one.

*If you're on PC

The PS4 Pro version runs terribly with the frame rate fluctuating from 20-25 fps.

I too was interested until it came time for release and it was apparent that the focus leaned very heavily on being online and PvP. That and the trophy list lol. A 100 PvP's? No thanks.

Is there CPU enemies if your running around?

I don't play games where you are forced to play against other users

Like my least favorite part of souls is invasions , I actually take my PS4 offline when playing

I was super hyped for this game and pre-ordered it, but had no time on release.

Is it too late to jump in now?

I really dig the concept. Sadly, this is one of the rare cases where the artstyle is off-putting to me. Will pick it up when it's on sale.

Just learned about this game today. Super into the concept and the fighting looks really satisfying. Disappointed there isn't a single player campaign or anything, but I hope the developer implements the fighting mechanics to future titles. I might pick it up next year when I can spare the funds.

Definitely a great game. Unfortunately, I can't dedicate the time needed to be good at pvp which is the main draw. It could use some more pve content.

I'm also impressed by the dev support for the game. They seem really open to feedback and willing to respond.

This game had a super rough launch and barely worked. Once you got passed that and dig into the game it is pretty shallow. Lack of any kind of grappling, no focus on environmental combat and a storyline hat can be finished in 2 hours. Good concept, but it needs way more to be viable or interesting past a handful of sessions.

For some reason I thought it was PVP only until shortly before release.
Turns it only mostly PVP, but I'm more of a single player girl, so this game probably isn't for me.
If the game ever gets single player targeted expansion or sequel, I will give it a shot.

The animations and camera angle bother me too much to be enjoyable. Like the concept, but it just falls flat, IMO.

Have never had an interest in playing this but have alwaysa loved the visuals. The outfits and mask styles are great. Often slightly Team Icoy.

The community is super supportive too, there's a "co-operate?" button on the chat menu, that gives the player you're targeting an option to enter co-op with you. They can help you find the bosses or grind moves.

Yes, they're the main way to learn moves. Half of the nearly 100 hours I've spent has been running around the (admittedly fairly small) world to find NPCs with the moves I want. (Hint: the richly dressed characters are more likely to own swords)

Definitely a great game. Unfortunately, I can't dedicate the time needed to be good at pvp which is the main draw. It could use some more pve content.

Their support has been wonderful, they listen to everything the community says and respond (there was even a quick patch that specifically buffed dodging for about a week that I feel was just to show all the people complaining about gold-chaining that there's a dodge button).

Can't make it past the really weak art style.

Plus, PVP focus is not for me.

I mean, different strokes and all that, but I find the game looks pretty damn good.

great post op. it was my favorite co-op experience of the year and i plan to delve further into the post-game since my backlog has been cleared.

Collecting all the moves is surprisingly fun, feels kinda pokemon-ish! But with axe-kicks and "hadrunkens" (my favourite move name) instead of charmanders and caterpies.

Have never had an interest in playing this but have alwaysa loved the visuals. The outfits and mask styles are great. Often slightly Team Icoy.

It reminds me a bit of the Witness too (which has my favourite water shader), the soundtrack is even better and worth a listen even if you don't play the game:

This game is definitely heavy on the PvP, if you're someone interested in multiplayer design, and/or understand what the term "Yomi" means (in regards to game design; reading the mind of your opponent) then this is a game to play. Because of the 16-move structure repeated matches against an opponent (which you're given the option of after each match) quickly evolve into feeling like you've been fighting each other for years, and go from being constant punch/kicks to measured feints and parries within about 3 matches. It's beautiful!

I don't mind a bit of PVP, but with that as the main focus, naaaaah. I'm waiting for sub-$20 sale price, and whatever and whoever is left by that point... that'll be fine. I'm sure it is a fabulous game, it looks like it! But without much PVE to play through, it has very limited value to me.

I bought it at launch, without playing. PS4.

Big mistake. Serious frate issues, stuttering and stopping as you moved around the map and when players joined the server. Not worth playing. If the recent patch has fixed things I might go back.

I enjoyed my short time with it, but I don't really feel the need to go back to it anymore. Had one epic pvp and that was enough.

It's a shame, because I really feel we need more martial arts based games. This one was close, but still didn't sate that itch.

There's been 13 patches, a couple framerate/network focused. The overworld can still get a bit choppy (though nowhere near as bad as it used to be) but the main event (the fights) are smooth 99% of the time now. It's really impressive how much they've improved it, considering the size of the team.

I love it, the PvP keeps me coming back, always wanting to tweak my deck or unlock those last couple of moves. The "kung fu monk" motif has always been a love of mine, I played monk in DnD and always pick the dexterity class in any RPG. I recommend giving it another shot, it's worth it to beat the bosses in their final state and see the story through to the end if nothing else (the lore is simple but sorta interesting). As a side note, they never increase the amount of points needed to level in PvP, so 5 points (a win gets you 3) will level you up VERY quickly, and if you find a popular school to join you can use their deck knowing that it's fairly optimized, then it's just a matter of learning how to play with it.

That's good to know. I might give it another chance, though I don't think any choppiness in the overworld is acceptable. I think I'm more frustrated at myself for being foolish enough to buy before reviews were out.

I mean, if you're ok with playing offline to finish the story you can always do that to get a couple hours out of the game. I did just that when it came out because the networking was so borked at the time, but afterwards wound up so enamoured with the combat that I suffered through the lag spikes for the potential of learning moves from players instead of NPCs (It's how I finally got the rarest/least useful move, Calbot).

I did play the 'single player' for a bit, but I still had frate problems. Not as bad as when playing online, but enough that the experience was frustrating. Plus I think playing PVE in a game that is supposed to be about PVP, because of technical issues, isn't acceptable. We've all done it and might even have enjoyed it, but it's not what people want.

It was also frustrating because I appreciate fighting games and thought the game was doing something different.

Yeah I love this game. I don't play it that often but with this and Nioh it's been a good year.

I love the destiny style online. It's amazing.

It definitely does something different, and if you are after PvP then I'd say it's worth trying again since the combat trials (the main 1v1 game) are the smoothest part of the experience now (although still not without technical hiccups, probably about 1 in 10 matches have some issues). They're more likely to disconnect before the match starts instead of lag now, at least on PC

anyone still playing this?...as a huge Dark Souls fan I was intrigued by this game but never ended up buying it...plus I hear it had its fair share of issues at launch with connection issues, steep learning curve etc...I know they recently released a major patch...how is the game in its current state?

I played the shit outta this when it came out. It was a lot of fun collecting all of the moves in the game. I would have stuck with it for a lot longer if they had more customization options and if they ironed out the server issues a little faster. I'm curious how well the player population has held up and if the servers are running any smoother on the PS4 version of the game.

I thought this deserved a bump since it's free on PS+ right now.

Haven't played since launch, but absolutely loving it. Forgot how well all the systems replicate that Kung Fu feel.

I've given this a go a few times, but I just can't get into it.

I feel like I don't understand the move properties very well just by playing and experimenting, and I'm also just not a huge fan of the overall look of the game. Animations often feel quite underwealming. Getting a hit doesn't feel that different to blocking one. As far as this type of game goes, I had a lot more fun with For Honor.

Just beat it today. Was definitely a fun little romp. Was surprised how quickly I did it. Took like 2 hours max to do so. Though I know this is one of those games where beating the campaign is just the start.

It's interesting seeing the current community very helpful. You'd think the opposite with the move to PS+, but everyone was helping each other and very few wanted to fight one another.

I enjoyed it but for me (I suck at the game) I was disappointed in the lack of PvE content. I enjoyed running into people out in the world and teaming up and having pick up fights with them, but trying the actual PvP stuff I just kept getting wrecked. I wish there was more PvE content because I feel what was there was pretty good.

Runs pretty terribly on ps4 and seemed like a much more shallow for honor gameplay wise
