With PS4, at least Sony had a valid excuse for not having PS3 BC on PS4 because of the exotic architecture inside of the PS3 with the Cell Processor & with the Nvidia GPU.

This time around, PS4 has no exotic architecture inside of it. Therefore, it should be much easier to have PS4 BC on PS5 right? Well, what would happen if they go & announce that they won't be including PS4 BC on PS5? I guess that I would be right in which I've been purchasing many 3rd party games on both Switch & on PC, because recently, I've only been buying exclusive games for it.

I also think that a lot of people are going to be expecting PS4 BC on PS5 (especially when many people have been downloading games), because if they don't, it'll be a big uproar & a lot of them will most likely switch to the next Xbox or onto PC gaming as a whole.

What would happen?

Absolutely nothing. Same as what happened this time around PS4 not having PS3 BC, it really is a non-issue for most people.

ERA would melt, but in reality, it wouldn't be a death blow or anything. It would hurt them though, especially if MS made hay out of it, which they would, but they'd still win.

Not going to happen though.

Then it would be the first PS console I ain't buying. Really no excuses at this point. Same goes to Switch too onwards I expect full B/C all the way forward

Not much other than people criticising and then going on to eventually buy the console for exclusives.

I think the digital library will become a lot more important in the coming generation

The same thing that happened with the Switch?

The main reason I buy a new console is to play new games, BC is icing on the cake.

Why are you asking "if"? PS5 won't be backwards compatible. Sony has given up on it. The most you will get are remasters.

People would care. I wouldn't say that one feature will make or break how the whole generation pans out, but being able to play games going back to the original Xbox versus only being able to play new games is a huge bullet point for Microsoft. It's bizarre to see people say forum posters whining would be the extent of reaction, Microsoft didn't even go through with their digital-only plan and it had a huge impact on the X1.

No BC isn't as big a deal, but people appreciate it at the beginning of a generation and if MS are smart they'll hammer home that their console is relatively consumer friendly.

BC isn't really a selling point to me.. but if they actively ingore BC for PS5 like crossplay then I'll just get Xbox.

Just because the ps4 architecture isn't exotic doesn't mean the PS5's won't be. Would you prefer a system that they purposely reduce the power of in order to achieve backwards compatibility or would you prefer them to do what they want? I would hate for them to scale back their ambitions with next gen just to achieve bc.

I'll still get it, but I will make sure to purchase all my multiplats on Xbox where my purchases are honored, and the PS5 and its purchase would generally be low priority for me.

The PS5 won't be 'exotic' though, it'll be an AMD APU, Ryzen based. Anything else would be stupid.

More important than BC is cross-save with increasing number of online-focused games. If we live in a digital era, there's no reason for my Overwatch progress to not carry over from PS4 to PS5 (there's no reason for it to be separate from my PC progress either, but life finds a way).

I don't know much about the tech but I thought the platform PS4 is built on made it much easier to port games and allow them to run on future hardware assuming it's built on the same platform. It's not surprising the PS4 didn't have BC with PS3 because of Cell, but they won't have that issue this time.

They'll be as fine as Nintendo with the Switch. Just keep showing promising first party games and the rest of world will look the other way.

A portal to hell would be opebed up and it would swallow everything in its vicinity.
Then anarchy would let loose in the streets and a hundred day drought would begin. Creating a large famine that would take the lives of countless innocents. Those left alive would only be able to pray...but to avail as no one was listening. There would be no escape from this chaos

I'd hold onto my PS4 so I can continue to play that library of games, but probably roll with a Xbox whatever into the future (or just PC).

Would be a monumental misstep, but there's no chance it doesn't have PS4 compatibility so not too worried about it.

I would keep my PS4 and not bother with a PS5 for maybe 3 to 4 years or whenever it becomes very discounted. This would also mean I would be spending significantly less on games.

If it did have BC, I would buy it day one, which means Sony would be getting more of my money overall

People would bitch and moan, Europe will show up day one, and I'll just buy the next Xbox because Sony's approach to things just seems very 2007.

Yep, that talk between Layden and Cerny last week pretty much confirmed this. They said that one of the most appealing aspect from the PS4 to developers was the hardware. They know they can't screw on this to the next generation.

I believe the PS5 will run PS4 games, but the games will need patches to take advantage of the new console's hardware.

They better so I can trade my PS4 in for a cheaper PS5 deal and not have to retire like the rest of the console which is collecting dust in the back of my closet; if they don't I still might have to give in because they might launch with FF7R

Both xbone and PS4 launched without bc, so it wasn't an issue for either not having it. But now the consumer expectations have been raised, and ps5 not having it would certainly be problematic.

I think a lot of people here are really minimizing this issue.

Assuming Microsoft continues their emphasis on BC and enhancing old games and letting you take your library forward (I'm convinced next Xbox will be BC)...

If Sony comes out and has nothing of the sort, it's going to be a problem for them from a PR standpoint.

Between gamepass, BC, and crossplay...Microsoft will be the CLEAR "for the gamers" option. That effect will likely be somewhat blunted because sony has the superior game lineup.

But it'll absolutely be an issue.
