"Switch has nothing in July, August and September"

"Octopath is the only big game of July of course it's selling"

Narratives shift, goalposts move, these are the days of our lives.

At least he isnt subtle about it.
Probably think the game will show up 2 months later on PS4/XBO for 20bucks as a digital game lol.
nah, if the exact same game was 60$ on his console of choice he would be all up on it, be hyped as fuck, and order a 80$ limited edition. the problem for him isn't the game, it's the switch

exclusive and not much new(!) first party output on the system at the moment...Octopath was jazzed up as one of the super exclusives for the Switch this year

It's cute that people actually think that people are getting hyped about a $60 retro JRPG because there's Nothing Else To Play™ on the platform right now.

You are entitled to your opinion. But I think this line of thought is why only AAA and indie are doing well these days. Unless a game costs millions of dollars to make, people expect it to sell for indie game prices. We lost the middle ground. And that is sad because that where most of my favorite games came from historically.

If the final product is anything like the demo, $60 seems very reasonable for Octopath (my my view).

And not to attack, because value is different for different people. But what do you think Mario Odyssey should have cost? Or what does it lack that makes it not worth $60. Again, not a swipe. I am genuinely interested in the response.
I love how he complains about the prices and then immediately port begging after that lol

I mean is there anything else out in video games soon? Because I mean, yeah, new video game near release is in top sellers.

essentially that is exactly the case...when it comes to new stuff, it is one of the really new games this year (which can be counted on two hands)

i also expect many used copies a few days after release on ebay from people realizing 60-80 hours of this is not to their taste .-)

I mean, I've been excited about this game since it was announced, but Nintendo SP drought this year makes it an even easier choice; it's going to be the first game I buy on Switch this year.

it was a very smart move to release a meaty demo a long time before launch, it must have helped a lot. it came at a time where the eshop was pretty barren, which got a lot of people to try it, and made them hype and anticipate the game for months. i downloaded it not expecting much but ended up playing for four hours.

Nah I don't think this game has any chance of being ported to the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
lol. seriously, HD twins? i had 2006 flashbacks

That game was on my radar since the first demo. I did not play the 2nd demo because I was so frustrated finishing the 1st demo without being able to continue the game. So I'll just wait ; and wait is nearly over :)

I'm really excited to play Octopath Traveler and loved the demo. However, we've seen in the past that Amazon video game sales charts aren't a great predicator of overall success.

I'm really rooting for the game and hope that it brings a lot of turn-based JRPG fans to the system who a month later will be looking for more turn-based RPGs to buy. ;)

The evidence is certainly compiling. Amazon around the world plus it's on the eshop bestseller list as a PREORDER. I haven't even seen that before.

The logic that people will just buy any game dished up to them because their is nothing else is just plain wrong. Look at consoles like the wii U, of anything a sparse release schedule drags everything down because the userbase isn't engaged and loses interest. Consoles which are flooded with releases tend to see higher attach rates and better SW sales all around.

It's a myth that certain games simply perform better because audiences are starved and even a quick glance at historical HW and SW numbers will show you that.

Ys came out only last week.

And the Lost Child the week before that. And Battle Chasers the month before that. And Earthlock & Atelier Lydie a couple months before that. There's actually been a fair number of JRPGs released this year for the Switch, although admittedly, most of them are ports.

No, I'm gonna have to hard disagree with you there that people are excited to put their pre-order money down on this 90s ass looking game because of a lack of compelling options. Literally nobody does that. That's silly. If people felt that there were no interesting games coming out on Switch, they would just... play on something else. Or do something else. We live in a time of near-infinite options for entertainment and nothing exists in a bubble.

Which title in this genre was topping charts on a global scale only to underperform later on ?
Usually these titles are released in JPN first and then a couple months later in the west. Global worldwide releases are reserved for the big AAA multiplattform releases.

I would agree if this thread was made just based on a single countrys performance....or we havent had much positive reception from the demos or the two japanese reviews published so far.

Unless they expect it sell 5m it should be fine. Either way it will be interesting to see how it performs.

Both of the demo is really good. I'm excited about the game, my only worry is the length of the game, outside that i'm all in.

exactly, it's ridiculous to say people are buying it because there's nothing else. no one spends actual money on something they're not interested in, and no one is forced to play something on switch at all times. people are buying it because they're interested in it, no other reason.

I don't remember the exact game, I just remember that there was a game I was rooting for that got up high on the Amazon sales chart and then when we got overall NPD sales data, I don't think it even charted. But if preorders for the game are showing up high on the eshop itself, that's certainly a good sign.

Right now, my main decision about the game revolves around whether I'm going to buy it as soon as it launches or if I'm going to be more responsible and wait for the end of the month when royalties come in.

That myth really needs to stop end. If only it was that easy to release a game during a quiet period as gamers will buy anything during those times.

Hype is justified, because after playing the demos it seems to be the best game coming out of Square since Vagrant Story. It has GOAT potential. People saying it isn't worth 60 are ignore list worthy.

Very glad to hear its popular, it looks like an exceptional game but I was worried being a JRPG original IP with a retro look it would just be niche

Hopefully sells gangbusters and we get a resurgence of JRPG games

Thats just gaming related spending, people need to stop acting as if those games perform well just because customers dont have anything to spend money on. Even if you only had a Switch....you would rather spend the money on another hobby, vacation, significant other etc. before getting a a game you dont want.

This was the to go explanation for indie success stories and now for Octopath.
Mario Tennis Aces isnt that old started out strong, same for Hollow Knight, YS8 in the west seems to have a strong debut as well, Crash doing numbers in the UK .....its hard to believe but there actually options to what to spend your money on even on Switch xD

Oh okay, yeah this makes sense.
In a vacuum they really dont mean that much but once you add more data from other sources it can paint a clearer picture.

Its been in the charts for a while now and in high positions too. its going to clear 2 million with ease and hopefully get to the 3 million point.

I'm glad this is doing well. Guess it doesn't matter that much whether or not some select people thought the $60 price tag was worth it.

We're starved for JRPGs with actually good art styles and general aesthetics.

Well, that don't explain Xenoblade 2 by the standard shared by some people then.
Good, maybe they will start making more like this so we won't have to wait 10 years for mediocre games like ff15

FFXV don't have anything to do with Octopath. Complete different manager/producer and Business Divisions altogether.

Theres a game drought. Theres a lot of Switches out there.

There's no game drought.

Just a nab that they have lost focus with the main franchise that helped popularize the genre. SE did not really understand why Bravely Default did so hood either. it's... as if, jrpg fans want to play jrpgs.. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And they will not understand either lol The people doing each of those games are completely different. Bravely Default was BD6 which was the same as Nier and Dragon Quest (each with different staff) and FFXV is BD2, which is like I said, also different.

If Octopath suceeds, that feedback will go to that group, not the group responsible for the Final Fantasy franchise.

Not at all IMO. Bomb Chicken is imminent after all! Been looking forward to that one for a while now.
Not to mention the last month delivering Mario Tennis Aces, Fortnite, Hollow Knight, Crash N Sane Trilogy, the first arcade port of Donkey Kong, Paladins, Pocket Rumble, Limbo, Inside, YS VIII, Runbow, Blazblue Cross Tag Battle (in Europe, late May in America), Lumines Remastered, Just Shapes and Beats and a ton more.

People would rather spend money Fortnite V-Bucks and battle-passes for their other f2p/online titles they play before spending money on a game they dont want. Its 2018.

oops...this was an honest mistake. Should have been Vita.

Dry summer and lack of RPGs on the system?

Eh. For a system only at a year and a half, the rpg library is pretty decent. Stuff like Xenoblade, Disgaea, Ys, Setsuna, Lost Sphear, The Lost Child, Battle Chasers, Skyrim, and some indie games.

3DS seemed worse to me the first 2 years for the genre. I think the main games in the first 18 months were Tales of the Abyss, Devil Survivor Overclocked and Etrian Odyssey IV.(Fire Emblem Awakening in Japan, but not until 2013 for world-wide). 3DS now has an amazing rpg library though.(largely thanks to Atlus and Square)

yeah, it had many games released but how many of these are new (non port, non "already known" indie) games? Mario Tennis, Pocket Rumble? which leads up to the "Octopath making waves on Amazon"

Can you tell me if you are just trolling? Because if you are, I don't want to waste a lot of time replying.

no, i am not.

let me tell you in another way:
when there isn´t much new to play people are looking also into games that they normally wouldn´t play, especially if the next arrivals of really new (non port, non indie) games are when? in the fall/winter? then, many people are like "60$ whatever, i want something new(!) to play on the system" especially if people already played the other releases on other systems, then it is easier to justify an exclusive game for full price because it´s only available on this system

take look on ebay 3 days after Octopath release and you will see many copies from people who thought it would be for them but ultimately are not willing to play a retro pixel Jrpg for 60-80hours. They presented the game as if it was from Nintendo since the Switch reveal and many people will buy everything Nintendo puts out, regardless of price or style. Hell, if the price was really a factor, Nintendo wouldn´t have sold as many Switches as they did...

Mario Tennis was also a bestseller on Amazon and a few days later ebay got flooded with used copies, same for Tropical Freeze...many people also know that Switch physical copies are sold out on Amazon shortly after release and that´s also a factor to consider why there are so many pre orders.

The game will sell really well, that´s for sure, if it´s real interest or "the thirst", no one can tell, that´s also for sure

For a system that is claimed to not have anything out at the moment, I sure have bought quite a few games in the past couple of weeks and will be adding this to the list. Very excited for this!

"Switch has nothing in July, August and September"

"Octopath is the only big game of July of course it's selling"

Narratives shift, goalposts move, these are the days of our lives.
Games on Nintendo platform, who perform well ( sale or review wise ) is never because of their quality, but somehow because of some negative narrative.
Reviewer are fan boys born in some mario diaper who overrate those games.
People only own a switch, don't have any other hobby, so they will buy any game during a drought.
Etc..

No console war to be seen thought.
