Amazon.com Inc. is looking more and more like a traditional retailer.

In a drive to win the business up for grabs after the demise of Toys "R" Us Inc., the online giant is going conventional with plans to publish a holiday toy catalog, according to people with knowledge of the strategy. The printed guide will be mailed to millions of U.S. households and handed out at Whole Foods Market locations, the grocery chain Amazon bought last year, said the people, who asked not to be named because the plan isn't public.

The move is part of Amazon's push to incorporate traditional retailers' tools into its business model.

Do kids even play with toys these days? Every kid has a phone or tablet now.

My mom kept all the old catalogs. My nephew is 13 and he loves looking through them. This is pretty cool of Amazon. Love the nostalgia.

That sound you just heard was the final nail being hammered into Sears' coffin.

If Amazon get better at toy retailing and use their muscle to force reform amongst the manufacturers, then great.

I mean the only place Amazon can expand is into physical stories

God... getting ahold of a toy catalog was the highlight of the Christmas season.

Obviously all generations say this, but being a kid in the late 80s and 90s was a special time, perfect mix of toys and video games and ignorant hype, the internet and instant access to information really changed that.

Could see stuff in a catalogue you never knew existed, even game releases and be floored.

I would flip through those things until they fell apart, then get another one from my aunts

It's a huge void, I'm not surprised at all that amazon will try to fill it (at least for one year).

Frankly, it's a really easy way for little kids (think under kindergarten age) to pick out toys without you having to sit and watch TV commercials with them

I used to blindly hate the go-bots too, but they have some really nice figures in that line. I love Transformers, but if I'm being honest, a lot of them were shit after series 3 or so.

Oh man, I loved these when I was a kid.

Every year there was always one ridiculously expensive thing in there that I was DESPERATE to have

I'll never forget the robot dino pets that I soooooo desperately wanted but mum and dad couldn't get for me. The only robot toy I ever got was one of those Poo-Chi robotic dogs with the button on top of its head.

Funny thing is that Amazon is generally a shitty place to buy toys. Pricing and availability is all over the place, and often changes throughout the day. I grudgingly ended up ordering many of my holiday toy purchases from Walmart online.

Amazon is disrupting my childhood.

Also Slayven are you making the Amazon Prime Day thread? I think some deals are already announced.

Not only is it a waste of paper, but it's a waste of time. Instead, just build out a web app specifically for this, complete with gesture controls on touch devices (to turn pages).

A paper catalog for this demographic makes absolutely no sense in 2018. Novel, but not a good marketing decision.

the death of Toys R Us still stings, that Christmas catalog was a cherished tradition for so long. Mom would hand us that catalog and a pen and go "here, circle all the crap you want, but there's no guarantee you'll get any of it." Was great to dream about owning all the cool shit inside, and hoping that some of the more sensible stuff would wind up underneath the tree.
