I think, THINK, that Ys VIII is now in my favorite game for this year. I haven't beaten it yet, and I don't know how close I am to beating it, but so far I am loving every second of it. All the characters are fun to play as, the story has been enjoyable so far, and the voice acting is fine. I also love how unique all the areas feel (Imo, this is how I wish 'tales of' games would handle areas in the games as well as the exploration, though I still would want world map exploration to return in the vein of "Tales of Vesperia" for the next tales of game that isn't a remake). Also I've noticed that Ys VIII is slowing rising in rank in the (NA) eShop. It is now, currently, at 24th.
For the record, the current (NA) eShop top 30 "All Games" is this:
  1. Minecraft
  2. Mario Tennis Aces
  3. Hollow Knight
  4. Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
  5. Lumines Remastered
  6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  7. Stardew Valley
  8. Plague Road
  9. OVERCOOKED Special Edition
  10. Splatoon 2
  11. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  12. Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros
  13. Kamiko
  14. FIFA 18
  15. Rocket League
  16. Arcade Archives DONKEY KONG
  17. Wolfenstein II: The new Colossus
  18. Super Mario Odyssey
  19. Owlboy (30% off)
  20. Enter the Gungeon
  21. Paladins: Founder's Pack
  22. Wizard of Legend
  23. Mecho Tales
  24. Ys VII: Lacrimosa of DANA
  25. OCTOPATH TRAVELER (pre-purchase)
  26. Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze
  27. INSIDE
  28. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2
  29. LEGO: The Incredibles
  30. Golf Story
For some odd reason, I just love looking at the top 30, everyday.
Thanks for posting this! Happy and pleasantly surprised to see Lumines and Ys VIII doing so well. It's a shame that NISA seems to have dropped the ball from a technical standpoint with Ys VIII, again, though. I got burned out on the game myself after getting to Chapter 5 (PS4), but fully intend to return to it again one day. Hopefully the promised patches smooth out issues for everyone on the Switch.

Any Assault Gunners HD impressions? I checked out a gameplay video of the PS4 version and while it looks a bit barren, as you'd maybe expect of a port of a six year old Vita game, for the price it seems like it might be a decent bit of mecha action until Daemon X Machina hits?

No problem. I love long jrpgs. The longer the better. Typically if I am enjoying an rpg in the first several hours then I am still going to be enjoying it hundreds of hours later. I should note that if I enjoy the combat in an rpg then I'm going to love grinding in the game too (best example of this for me would be "Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of a New World". Despite the game being generally worse than the first Symphonia in every area aside from graphics and combat I was able to put in 200+ hours into the game when it should only have taken me about 20 hours at most to beat it)

Not a lot for me this month on the eShop, sadly.

  • Octopath Traveler
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2
  • Pool Panic
  • Sonic Mania +
Sigh, what a huge summer drought on Switch /s

Going by footage. It looks so... slow and blah overall.

It was actually Marvelous' first Vita game, I remember seeing that years ago. I always thought it even looked very capable of running on 3DS but it never got ported obviously. I speculate it began as a PSP game.

It was developed originally and seemed to have been remastered by Shade, who was behind Go Vacation lo less.

Daemon X Machina seems to be a FAR more ambitious and higher-budget game. It's by key members of Armored Core and it shows and they literally seem to want to be the spiritual successor to it as well. Assault Gunners looks more like a "poor man's" Armored Core or a very low-budget one.

It is very amusing that Switch is now the only system to have both Assault Gunners and Daemon X Machina, but I'm not sure if they are that comparable after all.

Does the eShop have any game that's like a physics based game where the objective is to cause as much destruction as possible?

Kinda like Pain on PSN back on the PS3 or the crash mode in Burnout games. I thought Humans Fall Flat would be like that but it's more like a puzzle game.

Yeah, it definitely looks absolute miles behind DxM haha. Not really expecting anything near that level of scope or quality from a fifteen dollar eShop game, just maybe a little bit of simple pew pew action until the big hitter arrives.

And yeah, it definitely looks like it could have started on the PSP. But I really enjoyed Artdink's Macross games on that system so cheap, PSP level mech games aren't something I'm too fussy about. Though I guess this one doesn't have the suits or music from a licence like that one did so I might be a bit more discerning in its case

I THINK I'm right there with you. I don't quite love it yet but I am enjoying it quite a bit. I wasn't sure how I'd like it since gameplay videos didn't quite sell me, but I'm about 10 hours in and I'm singing a different tune. I just wish the technical aspect of it was better. It's nothing game breaking but there really is no reason this game is 30 FPS AND as ugly as it is.

I'm really eyeballing One Strike. I need some convincing though. I watched a youtube video and the reviewer gave it 6.5/10. What says Era

Completely agree with you there. There are some areas that, graphically speaking, look 'fine' but then there are areas where it becomes so pixelated that if I didn't feel like playing the game, I could pixel count instead, which, I won't do since that would be boring and I'd rather just enjoy the game. :) It doesn't bother me though since the game still plays really good. Load times are pretty good too.

I really liked this on the Wii U. Thanks for reminding me this is also available on Switch!

I remember people comparing it to F-Zero or Wipeout, but to me it feels like a very good arcade racer. I love it.

Not exactly also because it includes 12 tracks besides the ones that were avaliable on the wiiu and it's dlc

It is RIDICULOUSLY cheap and it can be really fun with friends since it's controls are both simple and hard to master

I mean theyre not for me, but I like what theyre going for..... someone might have better praises. I love the viking stuff but the game just felt lethargic to me.
I can see that. I'm a big viking fan, too, but I think I might hold off with the trilogy (see how players think the overall story wraps up) for the time being and pick up Bomb Chicken instead.

So a lot's coming out the 5th, but the main highlight's looking like Pocket Rumble, right? Definitely getting that one.

Without being inflammatory, why have people been so completely hyped for this one? Looks kind of unremarkable to me.
It's been delayed for over a year so I imagine people are just excited for it to come out. I was looking forward to it during the console launch window since there's wasn't a ton else, but now I could go either way.

More power to you being able to get that much out of a game that you enjoy. I was like that when I was younger (the better part of my formative years were spent playing/grinding through many a RPG), but these days, I often get burned out on games in the genre around the 20-30 hour mark, even if I find the game to be a good one. I also often find myself having to go extended amounts of time without being able to play a game (and as a result dropping it if too much time passes).

JRPGs are still probably my favorite genre overall, though. Persona 5 was an exception to this as I was enthralled with it throughout and the 120 hours I spent with it flew by. I have really high hopes for Octopath Traveler as it really seems to, at least visually, really hearken back to the SNES days. Hopefully I'll enjoy the game - I really liked what I saw in the first demo (haven't played the recent demo, yet).

I know that I've stated it before but Ys is seriously great! I'm having so much fun exploring the island and I finally reached a new chapter yesterday.
It's weird how much talk there has been about the technical aspects of the game and it's translation. The game runs great and plays great. It could look better I guess but I'm very forgiving of these things, at least in RPGs where other things are more important.

It would be a shame if any one has been put off by the pre-release talk and the reception of other ports. Ys VIII is a fantastic game if you like JRPGs.

It runs pretty well. Framerate is good most of the time. It will dip if there are a ton of scouts and titans all the same condensed area with collapsing buildings. The odm gear is very well done, it has to connect to buildings to swing and the swinging is very fun. I find the combat enjoyable, and the character creation is done pretty well. If you enjoy Attack on Titan, you'll likely enjoy it. I'd recommend it.

Weird glitch with Pocket Rumble where I couldn't get past the main menu undocked, but disconnecting a joycon, using that alone as the controller for a second then going back to handheld mode fixed it.

I liked it, and found it a surprisingly competent port. Very similar to the first game in some ways, from what I've read.

Thanks you two. It's still a bit pricey, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for it.

Not sure I'm convinced on Pocket Rumble.

Base controls are two buttons ('A' and 'B'), with a macro for both buttons for character supers.

Specials are performed with diagonals + either button held down, so characters have four specials. There's an optional set of tap buttons that you can use to avoid having specials come out.

Remembering to tap or hold a button is not going to make your game accessible.

I get that this game originated on steam but diagonals on Switch are a hassle at the best of times, let alone for a fighter where you need to specially hold a diagonal input.

Since characters have a maximum of four specials they could have just moved to having two attack buttons, plus two special buttons and moved special inputs to the horizontal or down directions.

I owned an NGPC with a nice amount of the library and had a lot of fun playing those games, but this just gets it wrong at the moment. The NGPC benefited from having a much more suitable input method for fighting games.

I really wanted to like this game more.

Don't listen. That poster must be a visitor from oposite world. The game is polished and plays great and is a technical marvel. Buy it ASAP if you're even remotely into future racers.
I dunno what that one dude is talking about, fast rmx is fantastic and worth picking up.
I agree,. Fast RMX is one of the sleepers on Switch. Do get it if you are into arcade racers like me. So much content for a reat Price.

This is a good summarisation of how I feel as well.

So much I like about this game, but the switch sticks just aren't up to what this game wants.

I'm thinking if I spend more time, I will find the controls less of a pain in the ass. But as of yet, not convinced.

Only played a chunk of the first and keep meaning to get back to it. They are kind of a mix of Oregons Trail and an SRPG.

It's a very dour story, you travel across a land and are hunted by an overpowering force with choices popping up often dictating your progression and party survival. Some real rough choices to make as I recall. Your party grows and thins. Combat plays out like a typical turn based srpg on a grid. There are two meters of sorts dictating different types of health and your attacks target each differently. Somewhat confusing at first as I recall, but it started clicking a few fights in. Again I didn't play too much of it on PC as other games were keeping my attention at the time, but I liked what I experienced and am waiting for a sale to double dip on switch and start anew.

Hey, it's polished and it looks good. Too bad it sucks and the online is dead. And I love futuristic racers.

Since the online, which is the only good thing about the game (when it wasn't laggy as hell), is dead, all you have is the single player which is REAAALLLY bad. The absolute worst rubbing banding I've played in a video game since Mario Kart 64. It's putrid, and the lame track design doesn't make up for it.

Sure it's fast and it looks pretty, but it's not a well designed game at all.

The Haze and Zensho Habitat is on par with track design from GX.
