Yeah Heist is still my favorite from them by a pinch.
I got it for free on PC, should I play it on Switch instead?
If you really want to play it on the go. Otherwise I'd say PC because the framerate can be unlocked and all the art assets are SVG so they scale beautifully to whatever resolution.

Very underrated game last year. I am not the biggest fan of the steamworld lore, but that game was just a brilliantly designed metroidvania. I especially liked the combination of classic metroidvania level design hooks with procedurally generated content to give the game a larger scope than other comparable titles.

Ahh, this one...
I asked the question because I have just finished the game and I wanted to be sure that I didn't miss something. Really enjoyed the game, I found that it ended too soon.

It's certainly a wonderful game. I dug the soundtrack and I thought the writing was quite sharp. Based on how it ends, I'd love to see the devs continue the series somehow.

2 didn't have procedural generation, only 1 did.

Bought it for Switch the other day, finding it surprisingly fun going in not expecting much. Is it worth playing the first game as well, or is the second one an improvement in all areas?

It's both, the first game is well worth your time, play it, have fun and then be blown away by the second game. I cannot point a single thing in that game that i would change or that bothers me.

EDIT:

Oh, i see you are playing the second one already, but still, the first game is great.

I finished it while on vacation. Such a great game. SWD2 and SW Heist are 2 of my favorite indies. They are very different games, but there is a remarkably high level of polish and loving care put into both games. Highly recommend.

"...where as Steamworld Dig 2 was 100% hand crafted. Meaning that every block that is in the world has been put there by a level designer.."

The mining block areas between the designed puzzles look procedurally generated to me, but I was obviously wrong based on your reference. I frankly don't see the point of placing every block manually. It is just traversal and breaking blocks for resources without any puzzles.

Just because there aren't puzzles in the over-world doesn't mean it warrants not using traditional hand-placed level design. I'm also guessing their internal map editor and engine is pretty robust considering they built both (I think) and they're cranking out polished games every 2 years, so it's not as outlandish as it sounds.

Im in the mood to try a good metroidvania game and this game always gets a lot of praise, can i start with part 2 or do i need to play the first one to understand the story/mechanics?

It's that scary as hell chase sequence, where the giant robots are 'asleep' waiting to be triggered if you get too close. There's a fair few memorable moments in the game, but that sequence always stands out as quite distinct to me.

It's also a good bit of foreshadowing
for the ending, because that moment reveals that the situation beneath the world's surface has irreversibly escalated, with the version we saw in the first game merely being hostile as opposed to the cavernous hellscape of the sequel.

EDIT:

Definitely play the first one. The sequel continues the story (and is a good mechanical foundation for the next) and the first game is still really good, if not as great as the sequel. It's only about five to six hours long, too, so it's good for a couple of sittings.

Thanks to everyone who recommended this game. Been playing it the past two nights and I love it. This game was made for the Switch in portable mode.

played it for around an hour when it released on Switch, never came back to it....it didn´t feel addicting to me, maybe i was in a bad mood or something but on that day i wasn´t so impressed and felt bored. graphics are cute and the whole game is very polished though, maybe i should return to it and play further...

Really liked the first, but 2 was really something else. Such a good game.

Loved Heist as well, but it didn't feel complete, if that made sense. It just sort of ended for me and didn't feel like it built to anything and I never felt it evolved throughout the title. It was too samey the whole time.

For me digging itself is the main attraction, I loved Diggers when I was a kid. I just love the main areas in Steamworld Dig 1 & 2, they're the ones that give you freedom to dig & explore. :)

I think it's because the game never pointlessly hassles you. You're free to switch upgrades around anytime you want and the gameplay loop is pretty much perfect.

I loved the first one - the western steampunk theme, the music, the game feel and jump physics. For some reason I didn't like the theme of the second one as much at first, but it seemed to drift away from the jungle feel later on. Music didn't click with me the second time around - don't get me wrong, the town music is cool but didn't really fit like in the first one. I'd definitely listen to it standalone, though. The second one took me longer to get into, also, but once it got going I think I enjoyed it much more than the first. It's the same with Hollow Knight - started so slow and frustrating but is amazing now that I've unlocked new items and techniques. All these games are equal to AAA quality in my eyes. Who cares about budget and teamsize when the quality and content is there? It saddens me when gems are overlooked because of the indie label.

Loved both games and just dug through 2 on my Switch a couple of days ago. The unlocking system tied to discovered goods which provides new gameplay experiences is what kept me at it. The percentage and area complete info was encouraging to exploring places a second time just to see what goodies your newest abilities could net you.

It's good! A bit short and the final challenges kind of underscored how the controls weren't suited for that level of precision, but I had fun with it. For this type of game though, Hollow Knight is the modern gold standard IMO.

Hollow Knight is quite different. Much more directionless and challenging, and while I agree it is the better game, Steamworld Dig 2 is still fantastic at what it does. Those finding Hollow Knight too frustrating due to the difficulty and having to discover a lot by yourself, should take a look at SD2. It's comfortable, excellently paced and manages to combine the addictive gameplay loop from the mining genre, without losing that handcrafted feel, which typically happens in those games with their focus on randomly generated areas and rogue-like elements. It almost feel like a Nintendo game.

First was amazing! I played through it at least 7 times and double dipped when limited run had a physical copy for vita....but, the second one is better...not sure if I'll double dip again though.

Awesome game, though I don't care much for the robot-cowboy-setting.

Guess I have to pick up this besides Hollow Knight.

IMO, Steamworld Dig 2, Yoku's Island Express and Hollow Knight is an amazing triple on Switch. These games are kind of similar in a way (exploration-based 2D Metroidvanias that play excellent in both docked and portable), but also extremely different to each other in many other ways.

Great character design, fast paced gameplay, balanced difficulty, interesting level design, good economy, added tension of losing $, andconstant upgrades that keep the pacing swift.

It's not too long and doesn't overstay its welcome.

And for that reason, you should all be IN!
