Philmont Scout Ranch, which is the largest Boy Scout camp in the USA, announced that they were cancelling all summer programs today, after a fire burned through 36,000 acres and is still only 25% contained.

I'm a former Philmont staff member, and my brother was going to be working there this summer as well. It really sucks to see the camp close, but given what I've heard about the fire and its containment, it's not that big of a surprise and probably the right move.

Sad to hear. I went in 2012 and it was honestly one of the greatest experiences of my life. Backpacked 100 miles over the course of 10 days. I figured this would happen when the fires started, but it's still disappointing. I hope they can recover soon.

They had a bad fire about 13 years back as well. The first two days of the trip we were hiking through nothing but a dead forest of charred husks. It was kind of eerie honestly.

The headline made me worry it was from poor attendance. While sad for this summer, I'm glad the place is still running.

Always wanted to go when I was in Scouts, but it never worked out since I was overseas during High School.
