Patriotism can have elements of racism, and can often be the doorstep to nationalism and fascism, manipulating the deep love some may have for a country into something incredibly twisted. We've seen it many times throughout history. We're seeing it even now with MAGA hats and Trump.

The only fight I ever got in over being called a slur as a teenager ended as soon as I backhanded him. He just looked absolutely shocked and shut up.

I know that's not fair, but fair is irrelevant - this is about results orientation. If we want a better country we can't trip over every asshole with a red hat. Trump people are having a victory celebration every time a black person so much as flinches.
That said I don't blame him for doing it one bit and there's a very large part of me that would have preferred to see the kid black and blue instead of just wet.

*shrugs* Growing up in Texas, patriotism is often very shitty to people. People talk about "respecting the flag" and standing up for it right now because of all that has happened recently, but that's been a go to thing for ages now. A way to force someone into doing the pledge of allegiance even if it was against their belief system or kneeling in peaceful protest. I mean, America is incredibly jingoistic that we renamed french fries to freedom fries because of something with France back in the early 2000's.
