That's some catch, that catch-22

Attack on Titan 107

On the bright side the spoilers were wrong. On the not so bright side the reality was even worse somehow. This series has really not been good ever since we started dealing with off the island details. It's just not compelling in the slightest.

They didn't say, but they do go into why she's pregnant and it's so bad. Eren is apparently against this plan, so I guess that mistranslation is where the spoiler comes from.

Yea I already read it, just wasn't sure if I missed them clarifying who it was. But yea... yeesh.

The mangaka is just so bad at writing the sort of story he's trying to tell right now. There was a huge stretch I had a hard time telling what was flashback and what wasn't. Stuff just seems to be happening for reasons at this point. At least when they wanted to get to the basement there was a clear thoughtline to follow.

I think most people's opinion of the arc is the opposite of yours from what I've seen.

I don't really agree with this take. Considering the impact of Eren's attack everything about the change in perspective and the audiences lack of info on what was happening was pretty crucial. Considering earlier in the series the long training flash back had the black flash back pages it was clear that the stuff with the kids fighting battles was present. The only question was if these scenes were current or if their had been an off screen time skip, which again, was necessary for the twist of Eren doing the surprise attack mirroring the first chapter.

My issue is the implimentation didn't work as it created a huge amount of confusion for a pay off that wasn't worth that confusion. If you're gonna confuse a reader it had better damn well be worth it, and that mirroring was too minor a thing to be worth the confusion.

It is pretty weird where we ended up, but I supposed the whole titan thing couldn't last forever...

The world of AoT has always been the least interesting part to me.

What that was the only interesting part of the story and why most people kept reading. The secret of the basement was literally the hook that drove the plot for 90% of the story. Everything after that is the consequence of learnig the truth.

If 90% of your series revolves around one twist, chances are it's not that good.

The best part for me has always been the characters and dealing with dangerous situations.

Yup. I'm super up on this arc. All the revelations, how the characters are dealing and Eren's arc have been incredible. I said it in the OT but if it sticks the landing, AoT is going to be an all-time great manga. So many little things (from even the shittier arcs) are all coming together.

That is a big if though.

Same. I'm not sure how there's even confusion to what's been going on when the gap is pretty clear. Similarly, while the basement has been a huge driver for character motivations the reveal was more of a confirmation for readers while also to show a perspective for the characters for the first time understanding why things are the way they are but the Manga has hinted for a long time towards a far larger world throughout that we're finally at this point.

The action is incredible but the character motivations and interactions are for me the most interesting part. There's a lot of uncertainty for where it's going to head towards for the first time for me which is pretty exciting as It's no longer a clear objective as the main characters have different priorities especially seeing how they've changed over the years.

It's not the one twist persay, but that twist signified learning the major truths of the world. We continued to learn or get hints during previous arcs with revelations about ymir being a wandering titan, bertholdt and reiner coming from beyond the walls, and a lot of stuff during the "attack on politics" arc. The twist recontexualized the entire series and everything we knew up till that point, and changed the focus of the story from learning the truth of the world to fixing the world. Arguably fixing the world was the original goal and the series came back to that but in a re-contextualized way. Even the current stuff is learning about the rest of the world by seeing it from the eyes of kids on the other side.

I'm not gonna call aot some masterpiece of literature, but it's done a clever job of having the story come full circle, but with roles and goals flipped between our heroes and villains.

Ippo latest

That one kid realizes that they barely escaped with their lives. Takamura wouldn't have fucked around like Ippo did.

Genshiken Second Season Vols 1-5
Ok so it's not as bad as I first thought when I first read it and dropped it - but I still think ultimately it's largely bad on the whole. Everything around pushing Madarame's love life just doesn't ring true to me except the whole thing with Saki and the 'confession' which I thought was masterful. But everything since then has been this weird romance anime which... like, I don't know, Genshiken was certainly about romance occasionally but it was never about fighting over someone really?

Like in many ways it feels like Madarame is this outsider to this story that is actually centred around him.

Yeah. And both post hiatus chapters were good...

Though i feel we are getting closer to the endgame. Hope it's not being rushed by the author or something...
If they are rushing it, it's probably because author's health that cause the hiatus in the first place. I'm hoping they don't rush, but I'll take rushed over no ending.

Genshiken Nidaime -END-
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Man I don't know how i feel about that whole thing. It was really good being with the gang and Hato especially of the newcomers was really fun and interesting (not to mention Keiko's expanded role as the group troublemaker), but everything being caught up in a Madarame sinkhole - especially when you didn't get to peak into his mind quite as much as you'd think - got really tiresome fast, especially as he kept being pulled back from the brink of a decision - any decision - more times than you could shake a stick.

Add in some really weird gender politics that I think moooostly resolved alright but I'm not 100% and I feel... well, a lot less satisfied than Genshiken 1 made me feel.

I have to say though as someone who has been waiting a literal decade to read it, Madarame's confession was pretty much pitch-perfect

June 2018 Recommendation: Stop!! Hibari-kun!

cSeG57n.jpg

School life romantic comedy | 4 volumes, Complete work, Not licensed in English

On her death bed, Kousaku Sakamoto's mother tells him that after she dies, he should go to Tokyo where he'll be taken care of by her friend Ibari Oozora and his family. Since his father died three years before and with no where else to go, Kousaku decides to go along with his mother's last request. However, he soon discovers that Ibari is the boss of the Oozora Group mob ring. Uneasy about his predicament, he considers leaving, but he has second thoughts when he meets Ibari's four daughters–Tsugumi, Tsubame, Suzume and Hibari–only to find out that Hibari is actually Ibari's only son. (source)

From dani_dc:
There is a very thin-line between having ignorant characters and having an ignorant story, yet Stop! Hibari-kun manages to walk this path, laughing at those who are ignorant, rather than being ignorant for the sake of humour. (source) [Note: dani wrote a long and detailed review with some spoilers, but it's quite good.]

Attack of the Titan

I hope this story with Gabi doesn't go to far...To be honest, despite the fact that the series shifted attention to these kids for a while, I am not really invested in her character much. Eren on the other hand

Can't believe they were able to make Katsura even more absurd. Seems like it's moving forward now but who knows lol.
