Probably one of the best candidates for a Hollywood adaptation of an anime but so was Death Note.
Ikr?

I don't know why it hasn't already been done. I know people find the anime to be a bit dry (and melodramatic for the later entries), but it literally hits a checklist for elements that Hollywood will easily be able to adapt and sell to peopl. Giant robots? Check. Big dumb action sequences? Check. Polit- no... POLITICAL THRILLER? Check. Military warfare? Check. Patriotism? Check.

That's not to say I want this to be a dumb action flick. Give this to a decent enough writer, and there'll be a wealth of commentary to make.

I will not acknowledge S2 of IBO ugh
Season 2 was pretty good. Not Expanse level good, but that show has the advantage of adapting a series of books and having some of the creators working on it to improve the narrative. There were some structural weaknesses sure (Vidar as a character is such a fucking huge waste of time), but all in all, IBO turned out to be a pretty solid science fiction show. It helped that it wasn't given the "conform to UC story beats" treatment like 00 S2 and AGE were.

Doooope. Hopefully they take some lessons from the way Spielberg filmed his big mech action in ready player one and nothing from stuff like Pac Rim or Transformers

I'd argue Gundam is a much better fit than Death Note, given that the structure is easier to fit into a film or set of films if you're doing some of the existing series (I mean, the best way to watch 0079 is through the movie trilogy), or you can do a new entry and build your film around the themes and concepts of Gundam without having to worry about restructuring an existing plot

You've mentioned the expanse two times. I've never heard of it. What is it

Nah, make it about Cima Garahou and have her live. That way we don't have to deal with Nina and Gato's sloppy retconned romance, and the actual hero gets to see another day, even though Kou and company keep fucking things up.

Nah, real talk but Cima is just a knock-off Haman and that would mean cutting out one of the most glorious death scenes in the entire Gundam IP.

The entire issue with the Nina/Gato plot is that there are minor plot holes as a result (why doesn't she recognize him from 100m+ away in the hangar etc.) but as a whole it works for the story IMO.

0083 is great because it's not about some reluctant but altruistic hero who is forced to defend his friends and ideals like 90% of Gundam series. Kou is just a petty jackass who wants revenge for being styled upon by Gato. Adding a story beat where his girl is actually longing for some of that Nightmare of Solomon mojo just makes it more personal and interesting.

It was handled sloppily though. The recent 0083 manga does a much better job in that regard.

Well yeah, because it's like The Expanse - an adaptation of an already existing story, so the author can correct the flaws in the existing work and produce a stronger product than the original.

It also helps that the manga's not likely to undergo a director change partway through.

08th MS Team would be a logical adaptation honestly. Follow that up with War in the Pocket. Less anime tropes to contend with. Probably going to be a loose adaptation of Amuro though.

Yeah that would be my dream, that they sell it in a way totally opposite from Transformers et al - not flashy giant robots beating the crap out of each other, but about a small military squad in a gritty jungle, only difference is instead of tanks they have giant robots. Of course, what's going to happen is it's going to look just as dumb as transformers/pacific rim.

Yeah, I have enjoyed most of the recent Gundam manga that have gone this route. The Wing manga also corrects a bunch of issues
and minor plot holes to improve the story.

Still the dumbest reason to punch a soldier, steal a top secret military weapon, run away from home, join the mercenary organization.

"Why, Camille?"
"Some random said my name is girly"
That wasn't his only reason, lol.

Kamile frustrated with his life and that's mainly due to his parents involvement in Titan.

Camille? That's a girl's name... but that kid looks like a boy.

People in this thread have fucking shit taste. Char is dead so fuck the OG Gundam. Go and pick 08th MS Team, it is grounded, not many space fights (only one tbp) and change the final boss. Done, bring me the paycheck.

I wouldn't pay you shit, and I love 08th MS Team. MSG could easily be faithfully adapted, including the space fights.

08th MS Team is so ridiculous. War in The Pocket is the true most grounded series. I'll gladly take a "War in The Pocket - A Gundam Story" in 2025.

Ehh don't adapt anything. If you absolutely have to side story it w/e but don't give people a reason to bitch they didn't get x right. Can imagine something with Gundam Thunderbolt's tone making bank in the box office though so I'm glad they're doing this. Mucha potential.

The best series are also the shorter ones, 8th MS, Stardust, War in a Pocket. WIAP would leave the theater in tears, but it does capture the idea of Gundam to kids and the hardships of war the best.

But I see no reason why the OG series won't work either. First 30 minutes would be straight up an adaption of the first episode or two, with the journey to earth. It's not all over the place or anything.

The only thing I would drop is this newtype shit. It's way too close to The Force and many other scifi cliches. At the most, hint at it for later.

Actually, a readaption of Gundam 00 wouldn't be a bad idea. The first season is fairly good and I could see itself lending well to the concept due to it being fairly grounded, but also a fairly normal idea of a "world police"

What's wrong with that though? It's not like people are going to go "This is too similar to the force. I'm not going to watch because of that"

I'm wondering if you mean "grounded" as in "on the ground" or that giant robots are more realistic when they're fighting on Earth than fighting in space, where the ground supporting their weight is no longer than issue.
