Man, fuck caves. Ever since I read the story of that poor guy in the Nutty Putty cave they've been a source of nightmares, not that I was particularly fond of them beforehand.

They need to find that entrance nearer to the spot where they are these storms incoming could endanger the kids.

You mean this one? Shudder...

You'd think a 26 year old with a family would be smart enough not to crawl into tiny spaces in some cavern system and after first resistance go FURTHER into the unknown...

What drives people to do this? I get big panic just laying in a MRT machine. I'd stay far, far away from any tiny crawl spaces.

Once these kids are pulled out, the military needs to C4 the entrance into oblivion so this does not happen ever again.

I'd like to know that too. Things like mountain climbing, wing suiting, skydiving, snowboarding from a helicopter, etc, I can understand as there must be an exhilarating rush from the mix of freedom and danger. Slowly crawling around in dark, tight, spaces though... that I just don't get.

To begin with, caves are obviously fascinating. A passion for exploration, discovery or simply challenging yourself then drives people to go around that corner, through that hole, down that slope, etc.

The other side of that is how some people either don't have the experience or the genes to be appropriately concerned when taking certain risks. They may not even see them as risks. It's a spectrum and thanks to some good genes and near-death experiences (eg, fell down a glacial crevasse and clung to the edge) I am safely on the other side. No spelunking for me.

@AP: BREAKING: Thai authorities say navy SEAL working to rescue boys trapped in cave has died from lack of oxygen.
oh no

edit: story w/ a little info

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...in-cave/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.d9c776fde6ab
Speaking at a press conference Friday morning, a commander of the Thai Navy SEAL group said that the former SEAL, a member of the Navy's rescue team, was placing oxygen tanks along an exit route to assist the young boys and their coach in their escape from the flooded cave when his own oxygen ran out. He was found unconscious around 1 a.m. Friday and transferred to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

This is getting a really bad feel now.

RIP to that selfless individual. Died from a lack of oxygen after delivering it to others. Cruel.

Look, I feel bad for the kids, I really do, but all of this could've been avoided if their fucking coach hadn't taken them into the cave. People are risking their lives to save them and now the rescuers are dying too. Don't go into fucking caves!

RIP to the SEAL

That sucks, and the whole thing of bringing the kids out through diving seems like too unlikely/dangerous. I can't believe we can't just have more pumps, I know it's a long way but still, you'd think it's something we could manage to do nowadays.

This is what is likely to happen, especially when one of Thailand's best has just passed away during the rescue.

It will be a travesty if they keep that cave open for exploration if they get the kids out.

You should not destroy an entire cave system because of a human mistake. Make it inaccesible through a fence if you must, but nature does not belong destroyed.

He must have been headed back from delivering the last oxygen canister, and placed it closer to the boys than he could make it back. RIP.

No....no no no no no someone died helping the kids???

That's horrible. I was begging for there to be no death of any kind. That former SEAL is a true hero through and through for giving his life to help those who are trapped. Rest in peace.

I don't think we need to go around destroying things because people can't treat them with the respect they deserve. Losing something like this would just add to the tragedy.

So terrible to read about this recent news. RIP to the diver trying to help all of these kids and their coach. You are a true hero.

edit: Just read on CNN that it can take these divers up to 5 hours to get from where the boys are to safety. Holy shit, I had no clue it took that long.

I gotta figure that the divers had "worked out" the route and had set lines and stuff already, and have plenty of support with staging areas, so that someone with this level of experience could die in as ideal circumstances for this cave with these conditions as you can get, there's no way they're getting weak, inexperienced children out that way. Just reading the descriptions of how bad conditions are, I was fearful that a diver death was likely. These kids are gonna be trapped for months unless they can drill in somehow.

Even then, collapsing or flooding the cave is a possibility.

Man, this is terrible news. I was hoping that they'd be rescued immediately after they had been located. I didn't know this was still ongoing.

RIP to the diver. I hope those trapped are rescued soon and that no other life is lost.

If the cave doesn't get flooded, I think the safest thing might be to wait out the rainy season.

A trained diver died getting to them, but they hope to get the kids out by having them dive? Is that still the plan? This could be bad. I hope they figure something else out...

That poor diver -- he's truly a hero. This should put an end to the idea that the kids can be taught to scuba dive and swim out 1.5km or whatever it is. A very scary situation. Waiting it out seems like the best plan but I hope their current position isn't in danger for further flooding.

A trained navy seal diver died doing prep work.

And a bunch of boys who can't even swim, let alone dive, are supposed to be able to make it out alive?
