Two of the most out there X-Franchise stories, Demon Bear Saga and Dark Phoenix Saga...
Are getting "grounded" takes. Again in Dark Phoenix.

Despite not working last time. By the same people that didn't make it work last time.

And yet Logan is being brought up to defend this? Why? It has nothing to do with this. There is no Wolverine story arc worth adapting that goes into anywhere near the same territory as those two.

Because they think since Logan was a grounded success then that means anything Fox produces with the "grounded" buzzword also means it will be.

A quick reminder: the writer and director of this film, who also wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four 2015 and X-Men Apocalypse said the following quote about this film:

"[We must] find a way to ground it so it's not too intergalactic."

No, you wouldn't want the Dark Phoenix Saga to be too intergalactic.

A metacomedy with the Fox-Men losing sets, unfinished effects, showing that this is clearly a movie of a movie and showing that all of this is talking place in some crazy comic book fan's head and that's the twist for the Fox Verse? Have I... have I cracked? Is this grounded enough, Mr. Kinberg?

It's honestly bewildering at this point.

We've seen films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man release to acceptance from mainstream audiences and critical acclaim. Infinity War did the absolute impossible and ended up being far more of a space adventure than many people guessed.

How is any studio still afraid to be a damn comic book at this point?

If fucking AQUAMAN is gonna say fuck it and go all out and FOX is still scared about the X MEN being X MEN! Someone needs to stop making comic book movies if they think this logic is sound.

They are inconsistent as hell but Fox's best>Marvel's best
Marvel plays it safe with the MCU, and I don't like their formulaic 3 act approach filled with funny situations and last acts' CGI-fests. MCU's villains lack characterization for the most part, and almost all of them are inherently evil, though I'm yet to see the Infinity War.
I think X-Men:DoFP is better than almost all MCU movies, let alone Logan.

I like Logan more than all of the MCU movies. but I think Black Panther finally put something up to par or perhaps greater than the good Singer Xmen flicks (2 and DOFP). All I asked for was some melodrama and ample time given to some of the character drama and they finally gave it to me.

thats what I really liked about some of the xmen flicks too, like in DOFP there's some great scene chewing with McAvoy in particular. most superhero movies tend to ring hollow for me since I don't give a shit about the characters (aside from the iconic cache behind their name), but a couple of the ones in the xmen franchise had some dope character dynamics.

now with just Kinberg on his own to the bushes with this crap, might check it out on streaming for more Fassbender/McAvoy but thats about it.

Phoneix. Grounded. Why??????

I will say though that I liked The Last Stand. Didn't even know people hated it. But its also been years since I've seen it and maybe it's a dumpster fire that I can't remember.

I don't see anything in the OP that sounds like a bad thing.

Seeing Jean's transformation into Dark Phoenix as a more emotional tale of a mental health problem that she is battling with sounds awesome. Instead of just getting angry and suddenly becoming 100% evil, we'll see her wrestling with the changes she's going through and eventually completely losing herself to the Dark Phoenix.

NO X-Men film except Logan (and MAYBE X2) holds up on repeat viewings.

Hell, I remember a lot of people actually liking The Last Stand the first time they saw it...

X2 is legit my favorite superhero movie EVER, out of anything the MCU, Christopher Nolan, or the DCEU has made.

Logan is still excellent too. First Class was a huge surprise at the quality and the new cast of characters (Fassbender & McAvoy), and even DoFP and X1 are still pretty good, again because of the superb casting of Magneto and Professor X in both the "old" and "new" series.

Yeah let's pretend Logan, DoFP, X2, and both Deadpools aren't great
Deadpool exists on his own.
Logan was great and is not in the timeline and not done by Singer.

X2 and Dofp aren't that good, okayish movies but in the sense of Xmen and what the whole team is about they are not really good.

I'm calling it. This is gonna be the worst X-related movie. Even worse than X3 and Wolverine: Origins.

Trank Fantastic Four levels of bad.

I wonder if we'll get a trenchcoat zombie Phoenix again too?

Lol.

Why are they going to retread the same failure again?

Why are people invoking Logan to defend this blurb?
Just because some folks don't like the sound of a 'grounded' Phoenix story doesn't mean they automatically prefer the MCU and tons of humor and colors and stuff. It means the Phoenix story is anything but grounded so wtf is going on here with this movie?

I prefer Fox's movies over MCU ones. MCU plays it safe you know what you're going to get. Fox are inconsistent but they have really high highs (and low lows).

This movie will most likely suck tho. After Apocalypse and fantastic 4, Kinberg is the last guy Fox should have given the keys to. He is beyond terrible.

I mean, it would be great if they could pull it off but we've spent very little time with this new generation Jean Grey and what we got in Apocalypse was paltry. Getting angry and going 100% evil very quickly seems pretty likely, given that a movie called Dark Phoenix is probably pretty committed towards getting the Dark Phoenix out to wreck stuff as soon as possible, regardless of what they want to say in an interview.

the fuck is wrong with "grounded"? Logan was grounded. You one of those types that needs gratuitous cg, jokes and colors?

It shouldn't be hard to understand. "Grounded" can be a valid and even the best direction if the source material is suited for a grounded take. Old Man Logan was perfectly suited for such an adaptation. Batman was well suited for Nolan's grounded take. Choosing a grounded take for Superman was wrong. Choosing a grounded take for the Dark Phoenix Saga which had a ton of cosmic elements is wrong.

You know, I like the majority of the X-Men films and spinoffs, and what Turner is saying there probably sounds cool and all within the context of the film franchise, but I really cannot wait for Disney/Marvel to tackle the X-Men. Despite having all of the trappings of the X-Men comics the movies have never really felt authentic to me (aside from Deadpool, mostly, minus the cartoonish Colossus). Poor adaptations overall. I think Marvel Studios with full control will make some X-Men movies that will be right, that will capture what made the comics special to so many people in the 80's and 90's.

Just get the guys who made Legion to help on the movie. Even if it's not good it'll be weird enough to make it interesting.

They could make something like Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan.
Generally I find a movie about a cosmic entity difficult because your character is essentially god. How could you have any fights what so ever. =/

Yes, but has anyone ever done this before? Getting a second shot at an adaptation and doubling down on the previous fuck ups? Shit is unreal.
These people always fall upwards, just like Trump. Has to be something with connections or whatever.

Age of Apocalypse was not bad because it was too grandiose with powers and special effects. Age of Apocalypse was bad because it was horribly written. These are not the same thing.

You can make a good "grounded" movie with an X-Men character. Something with comparatively small scale stakes and real world problems. But uh.... The Dark Phoenix is not one of those characters. If you want to do Dark Phoenix right you just have to go all out with it and own it. Just don't write it like shit.
