I'm wondering if you mean "grounded" as in "on the ground" or that giant robots are more realistic when they're fighting on Earth than fighting in space, where the ground supporting their weight is no longer than issue.
I mean, the reason giant robots are impractical on earth is that a human shaped robot doesn't scale up very well with regards to weight, but it's not because the ground couldn't support them or something like that

If Hollywood is involved they'll probably go with the most popular Gundam series to base this on right? In the west I'm assuming that'd be Wing

Probably will be based in UC because it is the easiest to adapt into a good story for a movie and it's not too hard to see a trilogy around Amuro. I don't trust Legendary to make this anything but horrible so I hope it is something funny like Wing or G Gundam. Wachowskis directing a G Gundam, let's do it.

But really, I'm expecting the movie to be an adaptation of the OYW with its own twists, maybe some Wing elements because of how popular that was in the West.

Both hyped and scared at the same time. Non- gundam fans watching Tomino would be mind blowing in a bad way. Can't wait for us to get an Andy (is there a better westernized name for Amuro) and Charles rivalry.

the only thing I would drop is this newtype shit. It's way too close to The Force and many other scifi cliches. At the most, hint at it for later.

I have to politely but strongly disagree with this. The entire concept of mankind evolving to its next phase in outer space is the very core of Zeon. Gihren is literally compared to space Hitler because they use the fuzzy science of Newtypes to push spacenoids as a superior evolved race over the earthborn. That's also why it's meaningful that Amuro is an earthborn Newtype, his very existence denies that Newtypes are a spaceborn phenomenon.

It would be far better to just do a better job of easing into the idea... explain the racial superiority angle earlier, better foreshadow Amuro's abilities, more explicitly explain that Newtype powers are shown to manifest as sensory abilities similar to telepathy and precognition but also aren't fully explored, and make a bigger deal about how Amuro basically torpedoes the Zeon philosophy. Then if they ever hit Zeta Gundam they can deal with the wacky Newtype X-Men powers like ghost swords and psychic stunning and shit, but at least they'll have known it was coming.

The worst part about this suggestion is that it actually makes goddamned sense.

While we're at it, Matthew McConaughey is a spitting image of Sleggar.

Yeah, I felt dirty as soon as I made the suggestion but it really would work. Haha.

They should just cast Michael Cera for Amuro tbh.

Wing was definitely the most popular in the US.

Back in those day you could literally walk into a ToysRUs,KB, etc and they had a full section of Gundam merchandise,
Including the model kits.

UC merch hit and killed all of that.
Only Gundam stuff really returned recently with TRU setting up their import/collector sections.
Kits never returned here though.

To this day I still own this kit I got at ToysRUs from around the time Wing aired on Toonami.

Cool! Hopefully it won't be too bad. I haven't seen a single good Gundam movie. Even the ones I like (CCA, F91) have kinda big flaws.

Please adapt Wing. No series has had multiple cool suits like Wing had. Gimme that Deathscythe and Heavy Arms. Hell I'd even take Sandrock.

You can tell the poster that only watched Wing really....
Yeah for real, it's going to be a problem for the movie to satisfy everyone, as you can tell from the thread, most people have drastically different ideas of what they want from a Gundam movie so it's going to be impossible to satisfy everyone.

Wing, like so many others in the west was my introduction to Gundam but outside of the cool designs it's close to bottom tier in the franchise. Do people even remember the plot of Wing? The gundam pilots were sent to earth to commit genocide, now that's how you introduce general audiences to a new property.

Anyone who wants this to be anything besides UC is out of their fucking minds.

Agreed, it has the most potential by a metric fuck ton.

Please don't adapt Wing. No series has had multiple fail suits like Wing had outside of G Gundam. Deathscythe, Heavy Arms. Hell even Sandrock is just a step above Tequila Gundam.

Yeah you're not wrong. Have any recommendations for someone who's more of a fan of Zeta stuff?
Anything Real Grade is good value. There's the Mk-II both in AEUG and Titans colors. There's also a fully transformable Zeta but I'm told it's a grenade (fragile and pieces fall easily) but the engineering to make a fully transformable Mobile Suit in the scale is impressive.
If you prefer the cheaper and more stable High Grades to the advanced Real Grades (only the Zeta is fragile, the Mk-II is solid), both the Mk-II and the Zeta have recent High Grade kits that fix some of the faults of the old ones. Those new kits are usually called Revive if you look for them.

Thank you. I'm moving soon and I'd like to have a fancy gunpla to compliment the new room.

Oh I forgot to say that depending on how much you want to spend and how comfortable you are building gunpla, the Ver2.0 Master Grades of Mk-II and Zeta are still excellent kits. They are bigger and more detailed but more expensive. You need more patience to build them but they look great with just an out of the box build.

Woof that MK-II Master Grade is right up my alley.

One of my best friends is a huge Gundam fan and his opinion is that if this movie ever gets made, at least it won't be as bad as G-Saviour, the other live-action Gundam movie.

If this movie ever gets released, it will be probably be garbage. But I really do think that a live-action adaptation of the original Gundam 0079 movie trilogy could work, if the creators understood that the series' main message isn't "giant robots are rad," but that "war fucking sucks." Yes, the series loves its robots, but Gundam separated itself from other giant robot shows from its time by being a serious sci-fi war story. I could easily see Char Aznable becoming a audience favorite a la Loki with the right actor.

You say this with Flay, Jesus Kira and fucking Shinn?!

Flay and Kira's toxic relationship is one of the greatest/relatable/realistic in all Gundam, yes - but I was mostly talking about the themes. Coordinators vs Naturals, The nuking of Junius 7, Kira being indisputably on the "wrong side" of the war, Kira's mental health sufferings, the growth of populism and extremism within both sides of the war. I feel like the way Gundam SEED acts as a character study is of far more consistency and quality then other shows even if it does fall into "chosen one" territory near the end.

Nah, I've seen pretty much all of them, but Wing was my first and holds a special place in my heart. But name another series with cooler designs. G had some, but I still don't think any were as good as Deathscythe or Heavy Arms.

Wings designs are the beginning of the ruinning of Gundam designs. Over designed. Waaay too over designed. But by themselves they're okay.

Chars counterattack was the peak. The Nu and the Sazabi are sexy. Jegans look pretty good. I even like the ReGz. On Zeons side, the Geara Doga. I'm not too found of the Psycho Doga, but it's largely inoffensive. With regards to the ships, I ducking love the Ra Cailum

Newtype stuff is weird, but it is kinda crucial to get the idea behind why humans should leave earth behind - at least in that universe. I think there's ways to adapt that concept.

The thing about 0079, to me, is that it fits that template of a lot of modern, dystopian sci-fi teen drama that's popular these days. You have all these teens who are thrust into a bad situation they want no part of while there's all these love triangles and statements about society at large. I'm not saying they need to adapt it *like* those movies, but just that there's enough there to maybe capture that crowd.

Glad it's not early UC. I don't think any actor could be a good Char.
Char also absolutely needs Ikeda's voice.

As a Gundam fan, this pleases me greatly. I watched G-Savior recently for the first time and as cheesy as it was...I hope the source material is more spot on with actual lore this time around. I'm already hyped from what I had seen in Ready Player One.
