I own a PS4 Pro and a Wii U, so I already own any ported or multi-platform games I want on those systems. Even if I buy a Switch, I will always choose the PS4 version of any game that's on both because I don't care about portability.

So with regards to true exclusives - i.e. games only available on Switch and nothing else - is it worth buying a Switch? Right now, the only game I really want is Super Mario Odyssey, although I have my eye on Metroid Prime as well.

Of the other big games I'm aware of, I'm not interested in Pokemon, Smash Bros, or Splatoon, and although Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks decent, it doesn't look interesting enough to pull me away from my existing PS4 backlog of games like Nier Automata, Yakuza Zero, and many others.

Now it's probably very evident that my knowledge of the Switch library is limited, but my general impression from this forum is that most of the popular Switch games aside those I've mentioned above are Wii U ports and multi-platform games.

I've got a couple of twelve hour flights coming up in September, so it would be great to get a Switch before then, as I've pretty much done with my Vita at this point.

So, what other Switch exclusives should I look into? Give me your recommendations!

UPDATE:
So thanks to the useful responses, so far I've got:
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Metroid Prime
  • Bayonetta 3
  • Mario + Rabbids
  • Mario Party (maybe)
  • Octopath Traveller
  • Hollow Knight (EDIT: Yes, I know there's a Linux version, but I would prefer it on a console because reasons)
  • Golf Story
  • Picross S
  • Deemo (assuming it has more content than the Vita version)
Seems like it's probably worth it now?

Oh god, one of those weirdo threads where they try and tactically disqualify Zelda — a game better than the entire PS4 library — as a Switch game because it was on the Wii U.

because I don't care about portability.

Of course.

Of the other big games I'm aware of, I'm not interested in Pokemon, Smash Bros, or Splatoon, and although Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks decent, it doesn't look interesting enough

Uh huh.

Well, if you really want to play Mario Odyssey and you have the cash to spend, go for it.

Why even ask this question if you basically already answered it yourself? You don't care about Pokémon, Splatoon or Smash bros which are Nintendo's games.

Of course.
He's inquiring about the Switch, so if he has the game on Wii U then it being on Switch wouldn't do much for him. Makes perfect sense to me.

Anyway, some of the big Switch exclusives that you didn't name are
Arms
Mario + Rabbids
Fire Emblem Warriors
Mario Tennis
Octopath Traveler
Kirby Star Allies
Mainline Fire Emblem
Mario Party
Bayonetta 3

If those interest you, go for it. If not, don't.

It is upon you to decide whether a Switch is worth your money or not. But you are underestimating the portability...

Released:
Hollow Knight (also on PC, but not the consoles you mentioned)
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Mario+Rabbids
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Coming:
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Metroid Prime 4
Octopath Traveler (out in a week)
Shin Megami Tensei V

And it's been only around a year. The answer is a big yes.

Well he owns a WiiU so maybe he already played Zelda?

Otherwise yeah he looks like he has his mind made up.

But I will say Hollow Knight is amazing

You're only interested in Mario and to be honest, it's not worth buying the Switch for Odyssey. Wait till a good Mario game comes out or the Switch price to go down.

Doesn't sound like theres gonna be much for you yet, might wanna wait til there's more that appeals to you and by then the price might be lower too.

One title missing from the OP that you might have missed is Octopath Traveler.

It's only worth it for exclusives and portable indies imo. But if you strip it off all those former Wii U games AND don't like a lot of Nintendo franchises like Splatoon and SSB, I don't know why even ask if you still have a backlog and list Odyssey as that one single game that interests you right now (that's also already available).

The obvious answer is to wait until there is more stuff that interests you. Except if you are one of those weird persons who wants other people to convince you to buy one so that you feel better about your buying habits because you know it's stupid to buy more expensive stuff even though you have plenty unplayed games lying around.

Yeah ...it's a bit weird.
Better safe yourself the time and money of you don't care about the games.

Then again he bought a WiiU .....

Since we're all here, how's Splatoon 2's singleplayer content? I was watching Giant Bomb's Quick Look of the DLC and what I saw from the subway stuff in the DLC looked like a lot of fun. Is the base game like that? And about how long would it take to beat the single player?

- Mario + Rabbids is an excellent game.
- Hollow Knight is one of the best metroidvania and is a console exclusive.
- Octopath Traveler is releasing next week and is an old-school JRPG. There is a demo on the eshop that was very successful.
- Super Mario Odyssey like you mentionned
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a very meaty JRPG with a vibrant cast of characters and a rewarding battle system.

That is already 200-300 hours worth of content.

Have you played Splatoon 1? The base game is similar to that (or a much easier version of what you saw on Giant Bomb's Quick Look). It would take maybe 5 hours to clear the base game of Splatoon, longer for the DLC. I think it's really fun but I dunno if I'd purchase the game if there was no intention to play the multiplayer at all.

Honestly I own a Wii U and a Switch and I never bought Zelda BOTW on Wii U because it's just not an enjoyable console to use any more. I waited and bought on Switch instead.

Trust me, playing BOTW on Switch is such a hugely preferable experience it's not even funny. Putting aside portability, there's the instant suspend/resume and comfy split joycon control options.

Don't just buy it for single player. Octo Expansion is meant to be a meaty and difficult challenge, while the campaign in base game is much easier. I would encourage you to try multiplayer. Many people who have never played online before find it really fun and easy to get into. You can also play it in non-competitive style.

Do you also play on PC? If not, there are some more excellent games that for now are only on the Switch (besides PC), e.g. Hollow Knight, Golf Story (actually this one is entirely an exclusive I think), Battle Chef Brigade, and more.

Bayonetta 3 (like Automata, it's another Platinum game), Octopath Traveler is being called a spiritual successor to FF6 and that comes out next Friday, Metroid Prime 4 like you said, of course the Sequels to Mario and Zelda in 17 months to 28 months from now.

It's also the best place to play Indie games, since those max out on even the Switch hardware and there are a few exclusives there as well, including golf story.

We are not very far into the Switch's life cycle, so it's hard to point out more announced exclusives, PS4 didn't even have bloodborn yet at this time in it's life, so it's hard to show you a library. Lastly, Monolithsoft's new game looks really interesting: https://www.monolithsoft.co.jp/recruit/special/

If you have a Wii U, it certainly is no reason to buy a Switch though, so I do not see how this is tactically. I bought a Switch only with the first interesting exclusive, which was Mario + Rabbids for me.

Super Mario Odyssey and Mario + Rabbids are awesome games and if you like those series, I'm sure Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade will be to your liking as well. But if you are not a huge platformer fan (unlike me, who couldn't possibly pass Mario for so long), then I'd say no, at the moment, the Switch is not worth it for its exclusives.

Doesn't care about portability, yet wants it because of some upcoming 12 hour flights.

Even if you don't like most of the Nintendo-made Switch exclusives, there should be enough variety in the indie catalog to keep you busy.

If you own a Wii U and a PS4, and don't care for playing multiplatform indie games on a portable I'd say wait it out for another year or 2.

Super Mario Oddysey, Xenoblade 2 and Splatoon 2 are the only notable exclusives in my opinion.

Octopath Traveller is also coming.

You also have Mario Rabbids, Arms and etc.

But that's not enough to upgrade in my opinion. Also for me Pokemon doesn't look too hot.

Luckily I didn't own a Wii U, so for me alot of the Wii U ports are basically new games. Also I like my indie games to be on a portable.

There are more, and Switch is an indie heaven to play those games exclusively around the house or outside, but if you don't care about portability, neither some of the biggest exclusive games on the platform...

Lol @ ppl loving switch so much they can't handle someone no wanting certain games on it or caring about the portability. I own a switch n don't like a lot of the games that are coming out on it n I didn't give a single fuck about it being portable either when I purchased it.

They already played Botw guys so why buy a system for some shit they already beat lol.

OT: you should lookin into
Mario+ rabbids
Octopath traveler
Xenoblade
Hollow knight
Fire emblem
If all those plus Mario aren't enough for you then don't buy a switch.

OP, you don't really want to buy a Switch right now and you certainly don't need to.

Topic was over before it was started.
Exclusives and indie games that work well handheld is what I've got it for.
Death Road to Canada is an excellent thing to bust out for table top multiplayer.

I'm enjoying my Switch, but I have absolutely no interest in Smash, Pokemon or Splatoon, so the premise isn't all that strange.

Bleh, hyperbole much. I really enjoyed BotW but I think it's massively overrated. It's a really good game with some interesting systems, great traversal and a beautiful world. But combat is weak and something like Horizon Zero Dawn outclasses BotW here by crazy lengths in terms of pure exhilarating combat. Enemy variety in BotW is also incredibly weak - and the story... omg, pure shit, princess rescuing trope of the lowest rank. As a non Nintendo zealot and a lover of games in general I'd rate it a solid 8/10 for just being a highly enjoyable, but flawed game.

Zelda isn't that good. Digimon Cyber Sleuth is absolutely the better game and I won't have you slandering it. How dare you, sir. Pistols at dawn!

Okay, in all seriousness, yeah, I totally not get caring that much about Nintendo's exclusives. I don't like Nintendo games that much either. I haven't played a single one that I've fallen in love with. Not one. Breath of the Wild is the one I spent the most time with, but beyond that, Nintendo simply does not make games that I have any interest in playing. I don't think they're fun or interesting. But I would still personally recommend the Switch because hot damn, playing Doom and Enter the Gungeon on a mobile device is amazing. Ubisoft kicks ass with Mario vs Rabbids too.

Splatoon 2 is wonderful but you'll want the DLC for your flight as it focuses on offline fun. On the flip, I've really got into this after binning off multiplayer games for a long time.

I'm currently going through Golf Story, which is awesome. Don't expect it to be a graphical showcase, it plays towards your whimsical recollections of 16bit Jrpgs through the medium of golf. The actual golfing is really decent!

You might find dry times if you go pure exclusive though in the future.

On the portability front, don't forget that it isn't necessarily a taking out of the house thing. Just being able to grab it and crash out on a sofa, or in a different room is a real bonus. In the past, I've just wanted to quietly and quickly have a blast on something and have just grabbed the thing out of the dock while the TV has a film on or something.
